Respect for Diligence
အထ ခေါ အညတရာ ဒေဝတာ အဘိက္ကန္တာယ ရတ္တိယာ အဘိက္ကန္တဝဏ္ဏာ ကေဝလကပ္ပံ ဇေတဝနံ ဩဘာသေတွာ ယေန ဘဂဝါ တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ဘဂဝန္တံ အဘိဝါဒေတွာ ဧကမန္တံ အဋ္ဌာသိ၊ ဧကမန္တံ ဌိတာ ခေါ သာ ဒေဝတာ ဘဂဝန္တံ ဧတဒဝေါစ:
Then, late at night, a glorious deity, lighting up the entire Jeta’s Grove, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, and said to him:
“သတ္တိမေ, ဘန္တေ, ဓမ္မာ ဘိက္ခုနော အပရိဟာနာယ သံဝတ္တန္တိ၊ ကတမေ သတ္တ? သတ္ထုဂါရဝတာ, ဓမ္မဂါရဝတာ, သင်္ဃဂါရဝတာ, သိက္ခာဂါရဝတာ, သမာဓိဂါရဝတာ, အပ္ပမာဒဂါရဝတာ, ပဋိသန္ထာရဂါရဝတာ၊ ဣမေ ခေါ, ဘန္တေ, သတ္တ ဓမ္မာ ဘိက္ခုနော အပရိဟာနာယ သံဝတ္တန္တီ”တိ၊
“Sir, these seven things don’t lead to the decline of a bhikkhu trainee. What seven? Respect for the Teacher, for the teaching, for the Saṅgha, for the training, for samādhi, for diligence, and for hospitality. These seven things don’t lead to the decline of a bhikkhu trainee.”
ဣဒမဝေါစ သာ ဒေဝတာ၊ သမနုညော သတ္ထာ အဟောသိ၊ အထ ခေါ သာ ဒေဝတာ “သမနုညော မေ သတ္ထာ”တိ ဘဂဝန္တံ အဘိဝါဒေတွာ ပဒက္ခိဏံ ကတွာ တတ္ထေဝန္တရဓာယိ၊
That’s what that deity said, and the teacher approved. Then that deity, knowing that the teacher approved, bowed and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before vanishing right there.
အထ ခေါ ဘဂဝါ တဿာ ရတ္တိယာ အစ္စယေန ဘိက္ခူ အာမန္တေသိ: “ဣမံ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ရတ္တိံ အညတရာ ဒေဝတာ အဘိက္ကန္တာယ ရတ္တိယာ အဘိက္ကန္တဝဏ္ဏာ ကေဝလကပ္ပံ ဇေတဝနံ ဩဘာသေတွာ ယေနာဟံ တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ မံ အဘိဝါဒေတွာ ဧကမန္တံ အဋ္ဌာသိ၊ ဧကမန္တံ ဌိတာ ခေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သာ ဒေဝတာ မံ ဧတဒဝေါစ: ‘သတ္တိမေ, ဘန္တေ, ဓမ္မာ ဘိက္ခုနော အပရိဟာနာယ သံဝတ္တန္တိ၊ ကတမေ သတ္တ? သတ္ထုဂါရဝတာ, ဓမ္မဂါရဝတာ, သင်္ဃဂါရဝတာ, သိက္ခာဂါရဝတာ, သမာဓိဂါရဝတာ, အပ္ပမာဒဂါရဝတာ, ပဋိသန္ထာရဂါရဝတာ—ဣမေ ခေါ, ဘန္တေ, သတ္တ ဓမ္မာ ဘိက္ခုနော အပရိဟာနာယ သံဝတ္တန္တီ'တိ၊
Then, when the night had passed, the Buddha told the bhikkhus all that had happened, adding:
ဣဒမဝေါစ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သာ ဒေဝတာ၊ ဣဒံ ဝတွာ မံ အဘိဝါဒေတွာ ပဒက္ခိဏံ ကတွာ တတ္ထေဝန္တရဓာယီတိ၊
သတ္ထုဂရု ဓမ္မဂရု, သင်္ဃေ စ တိဗ္ဗဂါရဝေါ; သမာဓိဂရု အာတာပီ, သိက္ခာယ တိဗ္ဗဂါရဝေါ၊
“Respect for the Teacher and the teaching, and keen respect for the Saṅgha; respect for samādhi, being energetic, and keen respect for the training.
အပ္ပမာဒဂရု ဘိက္ခု, ပဋိသန္ထာရဂါရဝေါ; အဘဗ္ဗော ပရိဟာနာယ, နိဗ္ဗာနဿေဝ သန္တိကေ”တိ၊
A bhikkhu who respects diligence and hospitality can’t decline, and has drawn near to Nibbana.”
