With Vassakāra
ဧဝံ မေ သုတံ—ဧကံ သမယံ ဘဂဝါ ရာဇဂဟေ ဝိဟရတိ ဂိဇ္ဈကူဋေ ပဗ္ဗတေ၊
So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, on the Vulture’s Peak Mountain.
တေန ခေါ ပန သမယေန ရာဇာ မာဂဓော အဇာတသတ္တု ဝေဒေဟိပုတ္တော ဝဇ္ဇီ အဘိယာတုကာမော ဟောတိ၊ သော ဧဝမာဟ: “အဟံ ဟိမေ ဝဇ္ဇီ ဧဝံမဟိဒ္ဓိကေ ဧဝံမဟာနုဘာဝေ ဥစ္ဆေစ္ဆာမိ, ဝဇ္ဇီ ဝိနာသေဿာမိ, ဝဇ္ဇီ အနယဗျသနံ အာပါဒေဿာမီ”တိ၊
Now at that time King Ajātasattu of Magadha, son of the princess of Videha, wanted to invade the Vajjis. He declared: “I shall wipe out these Vajjis, so mighty and powerful! I shall destroy them, and lay ruin and devastation upon them!”
အထ ခေါ ရာဇာ မာဂဓော အဇာတသတ္တု ဝေဒေဟိပုတ္တော ဝဿကာရံ ဗြာဟ္မဏံ မာဂဓမဟာမတ္တံ အာမန္တေသိ: “ဧဟိ တွံ, ဗြာဟ္မဏ, ယေန ဘဂဝါ တေနုပသင်္ကမ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ မမ ဝစနေန ဘဂဝတော ပါဒေ သိရသာ ဝန္ဒာဟိ, အပ္ပါဗာဓံ အပ္ပါတင်္ကံ လဟုဋ္ဌာနံ ဗလံ ဖာသုဝိဟာရံ ပုစ္ဆ: ‘ရာဇာ, ဘန္တေ, မာဂဓော အဇာတသတ္တု ဝေဒေဟိပုတ္တော ဘဂဝတော ပါဒေ သိရသာ ဝန္ဒတိ, အပ္ပါဗာဓံ အပ္ပါတင်္ကံ လဟုဋ္ဌာနံ ဗလံ ဖာသုဝိဟာရံ ပုစ္ဆတီ'တိ၊ ဧဝဉ္စ ဝဒေဟိ: ‘ရာဇာ, ဘန္တေ, မာဂဓော အဇာတသတ္တု ဝေဒေဟိပုတ္တော ဝဇ္ဇီ အဘိယာတုကာမော၊ သော ဧဝမာဟ—အဟံ ဟိမေ ဝဇ္ဇီ ဧဝံမဟိဒ္ဓိကေ ဧဝံမဟာနုဘာဝေ ဥစ္ဆေစ္ဆာမိ, ဝဇ္ဇီ ဝိနာသေဿာမိ, ဝဇ္ဇီ အနယဗျသနံ အာပါဒေဿာမီ'တိ၊ ယထာ တေ ဘဂဝါ ဗျာကရောတိ, တံ သာဓုကံ ဥဂ္ဂဟေတွာ မမ အာရောစေယျာသိ၊ န ဟိ တထာဂတာ ဝိတထံ ဘဏန္တီ”တိ၊
And then King Ajātasattu addressed Vassakāra the brahmin minister of Magadha, “Please, brahmin, go to the Buddha, and in my name bow with your head to his feet. Ask him if he is healthy and well, nimble, strong, and living comfortably. And then say: ‘Sir, King Ajātasattu of Magadha, son of the princess of Videha, wants to invade the Vajjis. He has declared: “I shall wipe out these Vajjis, so mighty and powerful! I shall destroy them, and lay ruin and devastation upon them!”’ Remember well how the Buddha answers and tell it to me. For Realized Ones say nothing that is not so.”
“ဧဝံ, ဘော”တိ ခေါ ဝဿကာရော ဗြာဟ္မဏော မာဂဓမဟာမတ္တော ရညော မာဂဓဿ အဇာတသတ္တုဿ ဝေဒေဟိပုတ္တဿ ပဋိဿုတွာ ယေန ဘဂဝါ တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ဘဂဝတာ သဒ္ဓိံ သမ္မောဒိ၊ သမ္မောဒနီယံ ကထံ သာရဏီယံ ဝီတိသာရေတွာ ဧကမန္တံ နိသီဒိ၊ ဧကမန္တံ နိသိန္နော ခေါ ဝဿကာရော ဗြာဟ္မဏော မာဂဓမဟာမတ္တော ဘဂဝန္တံ ဧတဒဝေါစ:
“Yes, sir,” Vassakāra replied. He went to the Buddha and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:
“ရာဇာ, ဘော ဂေါတမ, မာဂဓော အဇာတသတ္တု ဝေဒေဟိပုတ္တော ဘောတော ဂေါတမဿ ပါဒေ သိရသာ ဝန္ဒတိ, အပ္ပါဗာဓံ အပ္ပါတင်္ကံ လဟုဋ္ဌာနံ ဗလံ ဖာသုဝိဟာရံ ပုစ္ဆတိ၊ ရာဇာ, ဘော ဂေါတမ, မာဂဓော အဇာတသတ္တု ဝေဒေဟိပုတ္တော ဝဇ္ဇီ အဘိယာတုကာမော၊ သော ဧဝမာဟ: ‘အဟံ ဟိမေ ဝဇ္ဇီ ဧဝံမဟိဒ္ဓိကေ ဧဝံမဟာနုဘာဝေ ဥစ္ဆေစ္ဆာမိ, ဝဇ္ဇီ ဝိနာသေဿာမိ, ဝဇ္ဇီ အနယဗျသနံ အာပါဒေဿာမီ'”တိ၊
“Master Gotama, King Ajātasattu bows with his head to your feet. He asks if you are healthy and well, nimble, strong, and living comfortably. King Ajātasattu wants to invade the Vajjis. တေန ခေါ ပန သမယေန အာယသ္မာ အာနန္ဒော ဘဂဝတော ပိဋ္ဌိတော ဌိတော ဟောတိ ဘဂဝန္တံ ဗီဇယမာနော၊ အထ ခေါ ဘဂဝါ အာယသ္မန္တံ အာနန္ဒံ အာမန္တေသိ: “ကိန္တိ တေ, အာနန္ဒ, သုတံ: ‘ဝဇ္ဇီ အဘိဏှံ သန္နိပါတာ သန္နိပါတဗဟုလာ'”တိ?
Now at that time Venerable Ānanda was standing behind the Buddha fanning him. Then the Buddha said to him: “Ānanda, have you heard that the Vajjis meet frequently and have many meetings?”
“သုတံ မေတံ, ဘန္တေ: ‘ဝဇ္ဇီ အဘိဏှံ သန္နိပါတာ သန္နိပါတဗဟုလာ'”တိ၊
“I have heard that, sir.”
“ယာဝကီဝဉ္စ, အာနန္ဒ, ဝဇ္ဇီ အဘိဏှံ သန္နိပါတာ ဘဝိဿန္တိ သန္နိပါတဗဟုလာ; ဝုဒ္ဓိယေဝ, အာနန္ဒ, ဝဇ္ဇီနံ ပါဋိကင်္ခါ, နော ပရိဟာနိ၊
“As long as the Vajjis meet frequently and have many meetings, they can expect growth, not decline.
ကိန္တိ တေ, အာနန္ဒ, သုတံ: ‘ဝဇ္ဇီ သမဂ္ဂါ သန္နိပတန္တိ, သမဂ္ဂါ ဝုဋ္ဌဟန္တိ, သမဂ္ဂါ ဝဇ္ဇိကရဏီယာနိ ကရောန္တီ'”တိ?
Ānanda, have you heard that the Vajjis meet in harmony, leave in harmony, and carry on their business in harmony?”
“သုတံ မေတံ, ဘန္တေ: ‘ဝဇ္ဇီ သမဂ္ဂါ သန္နိပတန္တိ, သမဂ္ဂါ ဝုဋ္ဌဟန္တိ, သမဂ္ဂါ ဝဇ္ဇိကရဏီယာနိ ကရောန္တီ'”တိ၊
“I have heard that, sir.”
“ယာဝကီဝဉ္စ, အာနန္ဒ, ဝဇ္ဇီ သမဂ္ဂါ သန္နိပတိဿန္တိ, သမဂ္ဂါ ဝုဋ္ဌဟိဿန္တိ, သမဂ္ဂါ ဝဇ္ဇိကရဏီယာနိ ကရိဿန္တိ; ဝုဒ္ဓိယေဝ, အာနန္ဒ, ဝဇ္ဇီနံ ပါဋိကင်္ခါ, နော ပရိဟာနိ၊

Ānanda, have you heard that the Vajjis don’t make new decrees or abolish existing decrees, but proceed having undertaken the ancient Vajjian principles as they have been decreed?”
“သုတံ မေတံ, ဘန္တေ: ‘ဝဇ္ဇီ အပညတ္တံ န ပညာပေန္တိ, ပညတ္တံ န သမုစ္ဆိန္ဒန္တိ, ယထာပညတ္တေ ပေါရာဏေ ဝဇ္ဇိဓမ္မေ သမာဒါယ ဝတ္တန္တီ'”တိ၊
“I have heard that, sir.”
“ယာဝကီဝဉ္စ, အာနန္ဒ, ဝဇ္ဇီ အပညတ္တံ န ပညာပေဿန္တိ, ပညတ္တံ န သမုစ္ဆိန္ဒိဿန္တိ, ယထာပညတ္တေ ပေါရာဏေ ဝဇ္ဇိဓမ္မေ သမာဒါယ ဝတ္တိဿန္တိ; ဝုဒ္ဓိယေဝ, အာနန္ဒ, ဝဇ္ဇီနံ ပါဋိကင်္ခါ, နော ပရိဟာနိ၊

Ānanda, have you heard that the Vajjis honor, respect, esteem, and venerate Vajjian elders, and think them worth listening to?”
“သုတံ မေတံ, ဘန္တေ: ‘ဝဇ္ဇီ ယေ တေ ဝဇ္ဇီနံ ဝဇ္ဇိမဟလ္လကာ တေ သက္ကရောန္တိ ဂရုံ ကရောန္တိ မာနေန္တိ ပူဇေန္တိ, တေသဉ္စ သောတဗ္ဗံ မညန္တီ'”တိ၊
“I have heard that, sir.”
“ယာဝကီဝဉ္စ, အာနန္ဒ, ဝဇ္ဇီ ယေ တေ ဝဇ္ဇီနံ ဝဇ္ဇိမဟလ္လကာ တေ သက္ကရိဿန္တိ ဂရုံ ကရိဿန္တိ မာနေဿန္တိ ပူဇေဿန္တိ, တေသဉ္စ သောတဗ္ဗံ မညိဿန္တိ; ဝုဒ္ဓိယေဝ, အာနန္ဒ, ဝဇ္ဇီနံ ပါဋိကင်္ခါ, နော ပရိဟာနိ၊

Ānanda, have you heard that the Vajjis don’t forcibly abduct the women or girls of the clans and make them live with them?”
“သုတံ မေတံ, ဘန္တေ: ‘ဝဇ္ဇီ ယာ တာ ကုလိတ္ထိယော ကုလကုမာရိယော တာ န ဩကဿ ပသယှ ဝါသေန္တီ'”တိ၊
“I have heard that, sir.”
“ယာဝကီဝဉ္စ, အာနန္ဒ, ဝဇ္ဇီ ယာ တာ ကုလိတ္ထိယော ကုလကုမာရိယော တာ န ဩကဿ ပသယှ ဝါသေဿန္တိ; ဝုဒ္ဓိယေဝ, အာနန္ဒ, ဝဇ္ဇီနံ ပါဋိကင်္ခါ, နော ပရိဟာနိ၊
“As long as the Vajjis don’t forcibly abduct the women or girls of the clans and make them live with them, they can expect growth, not decline.

Ānanda, have you heard that the Vajjis honor, respect, esteem, and venerate the Vajjian shrines, whether inner or outer, not neglecting the proper spirit-offerings that were given and made in the past?”
“သုတံ မေတံ, ဘန္တေ: ‘ဝဇ္ဇီ ယာနိ တာနိ ဝဇ္ဇီနံ ဝဇ္ဇိစေတိယာနိ အဗ္ဘန္တရာနိ စေဝ ဗာဟိရာနိ စ တာနိ သက္ကရောန္တိ ဂရုံ ကရောန္တိ မာနေန္တိ ပူဇေန္တိ, တေသဉ္စ ဒိန္နပုဗ္ဗံ ကတပုဗ္ဗံ ဓမ္မိကံ ဗလိံ နော ပရိဟာပေန္တီ'”တိ၊
“I have heard that, sir.”

“သုတံ မေတံ, ဘန္တေ: ‘ဝဇ္ဇီနံ အရဟန္တေသု ဓမ္မိကာ ရက္ခာဝရဏဂုတ္တိ သုသံဝိဟိတာ ဘဝိဿတိ—ကိန္တိ အနာဂတာ စ အရဟန္တော ဝိဇိတံ အာဂစ္ဆေယျုံ, အာဂတာ စ အရဟန္တော ဝိဇိတေ ဖာသုံ ဝိဟရေယျုန်'”တိ၊
“I have heard that, sir.”
“ယာဝကီဝဉ္စ, အာနန္ဒ, ဝဇ္ဇီနံ အရဟန္တေသု ဓမ္မိကာ ရက္ခာဝရဏဂုတ္တိ သုသံဝိဟိတာ ဘဝိဿတိ: ‘ကိန္တိ အနာဂတာ စ အရဟန္တော ဝိဇိတံ အာဂစ္ဆေယျုံ, အာဂတာ စ အရဟန္တော ဝိဇိတေ ဖာသုံ ဝိဟရေယျုန်'တိ; ဝုဒ္ဓိယေဝ, အာနန္ဒ, ဝဇ္ဇီနံ ပါဋိကင်္ခါ, နော ပရိဟာနီ”တိ၊

အထ ခေါ ဘဂဝါ ဝဿကာရံ ဗြာဟ္မဏံ မာဂဓမဟာမတ္တံ အာမန္တေသိ:
Then the Buddha said to Vassakāra:
“ဧကမိဒါဟံ, ဗြာဟ္မဏ, သမယံ ဝေသာလိယံ ဝိဟရာမိ သာရန္ဒဒေ စေတိယေ၊ တတြာဟံ, ဗြာဟ္မဏ, ဝဇ္ဇီနံ ဣမေ သတ္တ အပရိဟာနိယေ ဓမ္မေ ဒေသေသိံ၊ ယာဝကီဝဉ္စ, ဗြာဟ္မဏ, ဣမေ သတ္တ အပရိဟာနိယာ ဓမ္မာ ဝဇ္ဇီသု ဌဿန္တိ, ဣမေသု စ သတ္တသု အပရိဟာနိယေသု ဓမ္မေသု ဝဇ္ဇီ သန္ဒိဿိဿန္တိ; ဝုဒ္ဓိယေဝ, ဗြာဟ္မဏ, ဝဇ္ဇီနံ ပါဋိကင်္ခါ, နော ပရိဟာနီ”တိ၊
“Brahmin, one time I was staying near Vesālī at the Sārandada woodland shrine. There I taught the Vajjis these principles that prevent decline. As long as these seven principles that prevent decline last among the Vajjis, and as long as the Vajjis are seen following them, they can expect growth, not decline.”
“ဧကမေကေနပိ, ဘော ဂေါတမ, အပရိဟာနိယေန ဓမ္မေန သမန္နာဂတာနံ ဝဇ္ဇီနံ ဝုဒ္ဓိယေဝ ပါဋိကင်္ခါ, နော ပရိဟာနိ; ကော ပန ဝါဒေါ သတ္တဟိ အပရိဟာနိယေဟိ ဓမ္မေဟိ၊ အကရဏီယာ စ, ဘော ဂေါတမ, ဝဇ္ဇီ ရညာ မာဂဓေန အဇာတသတ္တုနာ ဝေဒေဟိပုတ္တေန ယဒိဒံ ယုဒ္ဓဿ, အညတြ ဥပလာပနာယ, အညတြ မိထုဘေဒါ၊ ဟန္ဒ စ ဒါနိ မယံ, ဘော ဂေါတမ, ဂစ္ဆာမ, ဗဟုကိစ္စာ မယံ ဗဟုကရဏီယာ”တိ၊
When the Buddha had spoken, Vassakāra said to him: “Master Gotama, if the Vajjis follow even a single one of these principles they can expect growth, not decline. How much more so all seven! King Ajātasattu cannot defeat the Vajjis in war, unless by bribery or by sowing dissension. Well, now, Master Gotama, I must go. I have many duties, and much to do.”
“ယဿဒါနိ တွံ, ဗြာဟ္မဏ, ကာလံ မညသီ”တိ၊ အထ ခေါ ဝဿကာရော ဗြာဟ္မဏော မာဂဓမဟာမတ္တော ဘဂဝတော ဘာသိတံ အဘိနန္ဒိတွာ အနုမောဒိတွာ ဥဋ္ဌာယာသနာ ပက္ကာမီတိ၊
“Please, brahmin, go at your convenience.” Then Vassakāra the brahmin, having approved and agreed with what the Buddha said, got up from his seat and left.
