A River
“သေယျထာပိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဂင်္ဂါ နဒီ ပါစီနနိန္နာ ပါစီနပေါဏာ ပါစီနပဗ္ဘာရာ၊ အထ မဟာဇနကာယော အာဂစ္ဆေယျ ကုဒ္ဒါလပိဋကံ အာဒါယ: ‘မယံ ဣမံ ဂင်္ဂံ နဒိံ ပစ္ဆာနိန္နံ ကရိဿာမ ပစ္ဆာပေါဏံ ပစ္ဆာပဗ္ဘာရန်'တိ၊
“Bhikkhus, suppose that, although the Ganges river slants, slopes, and inclines to the east, a large crowd were to come along with a spade and basket, saying: ‘We’ll make this Ganges river slant, slope, and incline to the west!’
တံ ကိံ မညထ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အပိ နု သော မဟာဇနကာယော ဂင်္ဂံ နဒိံ ပစ္ဆာနိန္နံ ကရေယျ ပစ္ဆာပေါဏံ ပစ္ဆာပဗ္ဘာရန်”တိ?
What do you think, bhikkhus? Would they succeed?”
“နော ဟေတံ, ဘန္တေ”၊ “တံ ကိဿ ဟေတု”? “ဂင်္ဂါ, ဘန္တေ, နဒီ ပါစီနနိန္နာ ပါစီနပေါဏာ ပါစီနပဗ္ဘာရာ၊ သာ န သုကရာ ပစ္ဆာနိန္နံ ကာတုံ ပစ္ဆာပေါဏံ ပစ္ဆာပဗ္ဘာရံ၊ ယာဝဒေဝ ပန သော မဟာဇနကာယော ကိလမထဿ ဝိဃာတဿ ဘာဂီ အဿာ”တိ၊
“No, sir. Why is that? The Ganges river slants, slopes, and inclines to the east. It’s not easy to make it slant, slope, and incline to the west. That large crowd will eventually get weary and frustrated.”
“ဧဝမေဝ ခေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဘိက္ခုံ အရိယံ အဋ္ဌင်္ဂိကံ မဂ္ဂံ ဘာဝေန္တံ အရိယံ အဋ္ဌင်္ဂိကံ မဂ္ဂံ ဗဟုလီကရောန္တံ ရာဇာနော ဝါ ရာဇမဟာမတ္တာ ဝါ မိတ္တာ ဝါ အမစ္စာ ဝါ ဉာတီ ဝါ ဉာတိသာလောဟိတာ ဝါ ဘောဂေဟိ အဘိဟဋ္ဌုံ ပဝါရေယျုံ: ‘ဧဟမ္ဘော ပုရိသ, ကိံ တေ ဣမေ ကာသာဝါ အနုဒဟန္တိ, ကိံ မုဏ္ဍော ကပါလမနုသံစရသိ၊ ဧဟိ, ဟီနာယာဝတ္တိတွာ ဘောဂေ စ ဘုဉ္ဇဿု, ပုညာနိ စ ကရောဟီ'တိ၊ သော ဝတ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဘိက္ခု အရိယံ အဋ္ဌင်္ဂိကံ မဂ္ဂံ ဘာဝေန္တော အရိယံ အဋ္ဌင်္ဂိကံ မဂ္ဂံ ဗဟုလီကရောန္တော သိက္ခံ ပစ္စက္ခာယ ဟီနာယာဝတ္တိဿတီတိ—နေတံ ဌာနံ ဝိဇ္ဇတိ၊ တံ ကိဿ ဟေတု? ယဉှိ တံ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, စိတ္တံ ဒီဃရတ္တံ ဝိဝေကနိန္နံ ဝိဝေကပေါဏံ ဝိဝေကပဗ္ဘာရံ တံ ဝတ ဟီနာယာဝတ္တိဿတီတိ—နေတံ ဌာနံ ဝိဇ္ဇတိ၊
“In the same way, while a bhikkhu develops and cultivates the noble eightfold path, if rulers or their ministers, friends or colleagues, relatives or family should invite them to accept wealth, saying: ‘Please, mister, why let these ocher robes torment you? Why follow the practice of shaving your head and carrying an alms bowl? Come, return to a lesser life, enjoy wealth, and make merit!’ It’s quite impossible for a bhikkhu who develops and cultivates the noble eightfold path to resign the training and return to a lesser life. Why is that? Because for a long time that bhikkhu’s mind has slanted, sloped, and inclined to seclusion. So it’s impossible for them to return to a lesser life.
ကထဉ္စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဘိက္ခု အရိယံ အဋ္ဌင်္ဂိကံ မဂ္ဂံ ဘာဝေတိ အရိယံ အဋ္ဌင်္ဂိကံ မဂ္ဂံ ဗဟုလီကရောတိ? ဣဓ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဘိက္ခု သမ္မာဒိဋ္ဌိံ ဘာဝေတိ ဝိဝေကနိဿိတံ …ပေ… သမ္မာသမာဓိံ ဘာဝေတိ ဝိဝေကနိဿိတံ ဝိရာဂနိဿိတံ နိရောဓနိဿိတံ ဝေါဿဂ္ဂပရိဏာမိံ … ဧဝံ ခေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဘိက္ခု အရိယံ အဋ္ဌင်္ဂိကံ မဂ္ဂံ ဘာဝေတိ, အရိယံ အဋ္ဌင်္ဂိကံ မဂ္ဂံ ဗဟုလီကရောတီ”တိ၊
And how does a bhikkhu develop the noble eightfold path? It’s when a bhikkhu develops right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right samādhi, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go. That’s how a bhikkhu develops and cultivates the noble eightfold path.”
