ဂယာသီသသုတ္တ
At Gayā Head
ဧကံ သမယံ ဘဂဝါ ဂယာယံ ဝိဟရတိ ဂယာသီသေ၊ တတြ ခေါ ဘဂဝါ ဘိက္ခူ အာမန္တေသိ …ပေ…
At one time the Buddha was staying near Gayā on Gayā Head. There the Buddha addressed the bhikkhus:
“ပုဗ္ဗာဟံ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သမ္ဗောဓာ အနဘိသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓေါ ဗောဓိသတ္တောဝ သမာနော ဩဘာသညေဝ ခေါ သဉ္ဇာနာမိ, နော စ ရူပါနိ ပဿာမိ၊
“Bhikkhus, before my awakening—when I was still not awake but intent on awakening—I perceived light but did not see visions.
တဿ မယှံ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဧတဒဟောသိ: ‘သစေ ခေါ အဟံ ဩဘာသဉ္စေဝ သဉ္ဇာနေယျံ ရူပါနိ စ ပဿေယျံ; ဧဝံ မေ ဣဒံ ဉာဏဒဿနံ ပရိသုဒ္ဓတရံ အဿာ'တိ၊
Then it occurred to me, ‘What if I were to both perceive light and see visions? Then my knowledge and vision would become even more purified.’
သော ခေါ အဟံ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အပရေန သမယေန အပ္ပမတ္တော အာတာပီ ပဟိတတ္တော ဝိဟရန္တော ဩဘာသဉ္စေဝ သဉ္ဇာနာမိ, ရူပါနိ စ ပဿာမိ; နော စ ခေါ တာဟိ ဒေဝတာဟိ သဒ္ဓိံ သန္တိဋ္ဌာမိ သလ္လပါမိ သာကစ္ဆံ သမာပဇ္ဇာမိ၊
So after some time, living alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute, I perceived light and saw visions. But I didn’t associate with those deities, converse, or engage in discussion.
တဿ မယှံ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဧတဒဟောသိ: ‘သစေ ခေါ အဟံ ဩဘာသဉ္စေဝ သဉ္ဇာနေယျံ, ရူပါနိ စ ပဿေယျံ, တာဟိ စ ဒေဝတာဟိ သဒ္ဓိံ သန္တိဋ္ဌေယျံ သလ္လပေယျံ သာကစ္ဆံ သမာပဇ္ဇေယျံ; ဧဝံ မေ ဣဒံ ဉာဏဒဿနံ ပရိသုဒ္ဓတရံ အဿာ'တိ၊
Then it occurred to me, ‘What if I were to perceive light and see visions; and associate with those deities, converse, and engage in discussion? Then my knowledge and vision would become even more purified.’
သော ခေါ အဟံ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အပရေန သမယေန အပ္ပမတ္တော အာတာပီ ပဟိတတ္တော ဝိဟရန္တော ဩဘာသဉ္စေဝ သဉ္ဇာနာမိ, ရူပါနိ စ ပဿာမိ, တာဟိ စ ဒေဝတာဟိ သဒ္ဓိံ သန္တိဋ္ဌာမိ သလ္လပါမိ သာကစ္ဆံ သမာပဇ္ဇာမိ; နော စ ခေါ တာ ဒေဝတာ ဇာနာမိ—ဣမာ ဒေဝတာ အမုကမှာ ဝါ အမုကမှာ ဝါ ဒေဝနိကာယာတိ၊
So after some time … I perceived light and saw visions. And I associated with those deities, conversed, and engaged in discussion. But I didn’t know which orders of gods those deities came from.
တဿ မယှံ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဧတဒဟောသိ: ‘သစေ ခေါ အဟံ ဩဘာသဉ္စေဝ သဉ္ဇာနေယျံ, ရူပါနိ စ ပဿေယျံ, တာဟိ စ ဒေဝတာဟိ သဒ္ဓိံ သန္တိဋ္ဌေယျံ သလ္လပေယျံ သာကစ္ဆံ သမာပဇ္ဇေယျံ, တာ စ ဒေဝတာ ဇာနေယျံ: “ဣမာ ဒေဝတာ အမုကမှာ ဝါ အမုကမှာ ဝါ ဒေဝနိကာယာ”တိ; ဧဝံ မေ ဣဒံ ဉာဏဒဿနံ ပရိသုဒ္ဓတရံ အဿာ'တိ၊

So after some time … I found out what deeds caused those deities to be reborn there after passing away from here. But I didn’t know what deeds caused those deities to have such food and such an experience of pleasure and pain.
တာ စ ဒေဝတာ ဇာနာမိ: ‘ဣမာ ဒေဝတာ ဣမဿ ကမ္မဿ ဝိပါကေန ဧဝမာဟာရာ ဧဝံသုခဒုက္ခပ္ပဋိသံဝေဒိနိယော'တိ; နော စ ခေါ တာ ဒေဝတာ ဇာနာမိ: ‘ဣမာ ဒေဝတာ ဧဝံဒီဃာယုကာ ဧဝံစိရဋ္ဌိတိကာ'တိ …ပေ…
So after some time … I found out what deeds caused those deities to have such food and such an experience of pleasure and pain. But I didn’t know that these deities have a life-span of such a length.
တာ စ ဒေဝတာ ဇာနာမိ: ‘ဣမာ ဒေဝတာ ဧဝံဒီဃာယုကာ ဧဝံစိရဋ္ဌိတိကာ'တိ; နော စ ခေါ တာ ဒေဝတာ ဇာနာမိ ယဒိ ဝါ မေ ဣမာဟိ ဒေဝတာဟိ သဒ္ဓိံ သန္နိဝုတ္ထပုဗ္ဗံ ယဒိ ဝါ န သန္နိဝုတ္ထပုဗ္ဗန္တိ၊
So after some time … I found out that these deities have a life-span of such a length. But I didn’t know whether or not I had previously lived together with those deities.
တဿ မယှံ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဧတဒဟောသိ: ‘သစေ ခေါ အဟံ ဩဘာသဉ္စေဝ သဉ္ဇာနေယျံ, ရူပါနိ စ ပဿေယျံ, တာဟိ စ ဒေဝတာဟိ သဒ္ဓိံ သန္တိဋ္ဌေယျံ သလ္လပေယျံ သာကစ္ဆံ သမာပဇ္ဇေယျံ, တာ စ ဒေဝတာ ဇာနေယျံ: “ဣမာ ဒေဝတာ အမုကမှာ ဝါ အမုကမှာ ဝါ ဒေဝနိကာယာ”တိ, တာ စ ဒေဝတာ ဇာနေယျံ: “ဣမာ ဒေဝတာ ဣမဿ ကမ္မဿ ဝိပါကေန ဣတော စုတာ တတ္ထ ဥပပန္နာ”တိ, တာ စ ဒေဝတာ ဇာနေယျံ: “ဣမာ ဒေဝတာ ဧဝမာဟာရာ ဧဝံသုခဒုက္ခပ္ပဋိသံဝေဒိနိယော”တိ, တာ စ ဒေဝတာ ဇာနေယျံ: “ဣမာ ဒေဝတာ ဧဝံဒီဃာယုကာ ဧဝံစိရဋ္ဌိတိကာ”တိ, တာ စ ဒေဝတာ ဇာနေယျံ ယဒိ ဝါ မေ ဣမာဟိ ဒေဝတာဟိ သဒ္ဓိံ သန္နိဝုတ္ထပုဗ္ဗံ ယဒိ ဝါ န သန္နိဝုတ္ထပုဗ္ဗန္တိ; ဧဝံ မေ ဣဒံ ဉာဏဒဿနံ ပရိသုဒ္ဓတရံ အဿာ'တိ၊
Then it occurred to me, ‘What if I were to perceive light and see visions; and associate with those deities, converse, and engage in discussion; and find out which orders of gods those deities come from; and what deeds caused those deities to be reborn there after passing away from here; and what deeds caused those deities to have such food and such an experience of pleasure and pain; and that these deities have a life-span of such a length; and whether or not I have previously lived together with those deities? Then my knowledge and vision would become even more purified.’
သော ခေါ အဟံ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အပရေန သမယေန အပ္ပမတ္တော အာတာပီ ပဟိတတ္တော ဝိဟရန္တော ဩဘာသဉ္စေဝ သဉ္ဇာနာမိ, ရူပါနိ စ ပဿာမိ, တာဟိ စ ဒေဝတာဟိ သဒ္ဓိံ သန္တိဋ္ဌာမိ သလ္လပါမိ သာကစ္ဆံ သမာပဇ္ဇာမိ, တာ စ ဒေဝတာ ဇာနာမိ: ‘ဣမာ ဒေဝတာ အမုကမှာ ဝါ အမုကမှာ ဝါ ဒေဝနိကာယာ'တိ, တာ စ ဒေဝတာ ဇာနာမိ: ‘ဣမာ ဒေဝတာ ဣမဿ ကမ္မဿ ဝိပါကေန ဣတော စုတာ တတ္ထ ဥပပန္နာ'တိ, တာ စ ဒေဝတာ ဇာနာမိ: ‘ဣမာ ဒေဝတာ ဧဝမာဟာရာ ဧဝံသုခဒုက္ခပ္ပဋိသံဝေဒိနိယော'တိ, တာ စ ဒေဝတာ ဇာနာမိ: ‘ဣမာ ဒေဝတာ ဧဝံဒီဃာယုကာ ဧဝံစိရဋ္ဌိတိကာ'တိ, တာ စ ဒေဝတာ ဇာနာမိ ယဒိ ဝါ မေ ဒေဝတာဟိ သဒ္ဓိံ သန္နိဝုတ္ထပုဗ္ဗံ ယဒိ ဝါ န သန္နိဝုတ္ထပုဗ္ဗန္တိ၊
So after some time … I found out whether or not I have previously lived together with those deities.
ယာဝကီဝဉ္စ မေ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဧဝံ အဋ္ဌပရိဝဋ္ဋံ အဓိဒေဝဉာဏဒဿနံ န သုဝိသုဒ္ဓံ အဟောသိ, နေဝ တာဝါဟံ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ‘သဒေဝကေ လောကေ သမာရကေ သဗြဟ္မကေ သဿမဏဗြာဟ္မဏိယာ ပဇာယ သဒေဝမနုဿာယ အနုတ္တရံ သမ္မာသမ္ဗောဓိံ အဘိသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓေါ'တိ ပစ္စညာသိံ၊
As long as my knowledge and vision about the deities was not fully purified from these eight perspectives, I didn’t announce my supreme perfect awakening in this world with its gods, Māras, and Brahmās, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans.
ယတော စ ခေါ မေ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဧဝံ အဋ္ဌပရိဝဋ္ဋံ အဓိဒေဝဉာဏဒဿနံ သုဝိသုဒ္ဓံ အဟောသိ, အထာဟံ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ‘သဒေဝကေ လောကေ သမာရကေ သဗြဟ္မကေ သဿမဏဗြာဟ္မဏိယာ ပဇာယ သဒေဝမနုဿာယ အနုတ္တရံ သမ္မာသမ္ဗောဓိံ အဘိသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓေါ'တိ ပစ္စညာသိံ; ဉာဏဉ္စ ပန မေ ဒဿနံ ဥဒပါဒိ; အကုပ္ပါ မေ စေတောဝိမုတ္တိ; အယမန္တိမာ ဇာတိ နတ္ထိ ဒါနိ ပုနဗ္ဘဝေါ”တိ၊
But when my knowledge and vision about the deities was fully purified from these eight perspectives, I announced my supreme perfect awakening in this world with its gods, Māras, and Brahmās, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans. Knowledge and vision arose in me: ‘My freedom is unshakable; this is my last rebirth; now there’ll be no more future lives.’”
