Devadatta’s Failure
ဧကံ သမယံ ဘဂဝါ ရာဇဂဟေ ဝိဟရတိ ဂိဇ္ဈကူဋေ ပဗ္ဗတေ အစိရပက္ကန္တေ ဒေဝဒတ္တေ၊ တတြ ဘဂဝါ ဒေဝဒတ္တံ အာရဗ္ဘ ဘိက္ခူ အာမန္တေသိ:
At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, on the Vulture’s Peak Mountain, not long after Devadatta had left. There the Buddha spoke to the bhikkhus about Devadatta:
“သာဓု, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဘိက္ခု ကာလေန ကာလံ အတ္တဝိပတ္တိံ ပစ္စဝေက္ခိတာ ဟောတိ၊ သာဓု, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဘိက္ခု ကာလေန ကာလံ ပရဝိပတ္တိံ ပစ္စဝေက္ခိတာ ဟောတိ၊ သာဓု, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဘိက္ခု ကာလေန ကာလံ အတ္တသမ္ပတ္တိံ ပစ္စဝေက္ခိတာ ဟောတိ၊ သာဓု, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဘိက္ခု ကာလေန ကာလံ ပရသမ္ပတ္တိံ ပစ္စဝေက္ခိတာ ဟောတိ၊ အဋ္ဌဟိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အသဒ္ဓမ္မေဟိ အဘိဘူတော ပရိယာဒိန္နစိတ္တော ဒေဝဒတ္တော အာပါယိကော နေရယိကော ကပ္ပဋ္ဌော အတေကိစ္ဆော၊
“Bhikkhus, it’s good for a bhikkhu to check their own failings from time to time. It’s good for a bhikkhu to check the failings of others from time to time. It’s good for a bhikkhu to check their own successes from time to time. It’s good for a bhikkhu to check the successes of others from time to time. Overcome and overwhelmed by eight things that oppose the true teaching, Devadatta is going to a place of loss, to hell, there to remain for an eon, irredeemable.

What eight? Overcome and overwhelmed by gain … loss … fame … disgrace … honor … dishonor … corrupt wishes … bad friendship, Devadatta is going to a place of loss, to hell, there to remain for an eon, irredeemable. Overcome and overwhelmed by these eight things that oppose the true teaching, Devadatta is going to a place of loss, to hell, there to remain for an eon, irredeemable.
သာဓု, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဘိက္ခု ဥပ္ပန္နံ လာဘံ အဘိဘုယျ အဘိဘုယျ ဝိဟရေယျ, ဥပ္ပန္နံ အလာဘံ …ပေ… ဥပ္ပန္နံ ယသံ … ဥပ္ပန္နံ အယသံ … ဥပ္ပန္နံ သက္ကာရံ … ဥပ္ပန္နံ အသက္ကာရံ … ဥပ္ပန္နံ ပါပိစ္ဆတံ … ဥပ္ပန္နံ ပါပမိတ္တတံ အဘိဘုယျ အဘိဘုယျ ဝိဟရေယျ၊
It’s good for a bhikkhu, whenever they encounter it, to overcome gain … loss … fame … disgrace … honor … dishonor … corrupt wishes … bad friendship.
ကိဉ္စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဘိက္ခု အတ္ထဝသံ ပဋိစ္စ ဥပ္ပန္နံ လာဘံ အဘိဘုယျ အဘိဘုယျ ဝိဟရေယျ, ဥပ္ပန္နံ အလာဘံ …ပေ… ဥပ္ပန္နံ ယသံ … ဥပ္ပန္နံ အယသံ … ဥပ္ပန္နံ သက္ကာရံ … ဥပ္ပန္နံ အသက္ကာရံ … ဥပ္ပန္နံ ပါပိစ္ဆတံ … ဥပ္ပန္နံ ပါပမိတ္တတံ အဘိဘုယျ အဘိဘုယျ ဝိဟရေယျ?
What advantage does a bhikkhu gain by overcoming these eight things?
ယံ ဟိဿ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဥပ္ပန္နံ လာဘံ အနဘိဘုယျ ဝိဟရတော ဥပ္ပဇ္ဇေယျုံ အာသဝါ ဝိဃာတပရိဠာဟာ, ဥပ္ပန္နံ လာဘံ အဘိဘုယျ ဝိဟရတော ဧဝံသ တေ အာသဝါ ဝိဃာတပရိဠာဟာ န ဟောန္တိ၊ ယံ ဟိဿ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဥပ္ပန္နံ အလာဘံ …ပေ… ဥပ္ပန္နံ ယသံ … ဥပ္ပန္နံ အယသံ … ဥပ္ပန္နံ သက္ကာရံ … ဥပ္ပန္နံ အသက္ကာရံ … ဥပ္ပန္နံ ပါပိစ္ဆတံ … ဥပ္ပန္နံ ပါပမိတ္တတံ အနဘိဘုယျ ဝိဟရတော ဥပ္ပဇ္ဇေယျုံ အာသဝါ ဝိဃာတပရိဠာဟာ, ဥပ္ပန္နံ ပါပမိတ္တတံ အဘိဘုယျ ဝိဟရတော ဧဝံသ တေ အာသဝါ ဝိဃာတပရိဠာဟာ န ဟောန္တိ၊ ဣဒံ ခေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဘိက္ခု အတ္ထဝသံ ပဋိစ္စ ဥပ္ပန္နံ လာဘံ အဘိဘုယျ အဘိဘုယျ ဝိဟရေယျ, ဥပ္ပန္နံ အလာဘံ …ပေ… ဥပ္ပန္နံ ယသံ … ဥပ္ပန္နံ အယသံ … ဥပ္ပန္နံ သက္ကာရံ … ဥပ္ပန္နံ အသက္ကာရံ … ဥပ္ပန္နံ ပါပိစ္ဆတံ … ဥပ္ပန္နံ ပါပမိတ္တတံ အဘိဘုယျ အဘိဘုယျ ဝိဟရေယျ၊
The distressing and feverish defilements that might arise in someone who lives without overcoming these eight things do not arise when they have overcome them. This is the advantage that a bhikkhu gains by overcoming these eight things.
တသ္မာတိဟ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဧဝံ သိက္ခိတဗ္ဗံ: ‘ဥပ္ပန္နံ လာဘံ အဘိဘုယျ အဘိဘုယျ ဝိဟရိဿာမ, ဥပ္ပန္နံ အလာဘံ …ပေ… ဥပ္ပန္နံ ယသံ … ဥပ္ပန္နံ အယသံ … ဥပ္ပန္နံ သက္ကာရံ … ဥပ္ပန္နံ အသက္ကာရံ … ဥပ္ပန္နံ ပါပိစ္ဆတံ … ဥပ္ပန္နံ ပါပမိတ္တတံ အဘိဘုယျ အဘိဘုယျ ဝိဟရိဿာမာ'တိ၊ ဧဝဉှိ ဝေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သိက္ခိတဗ္ဗန်”တိ၊
So, bhikkhus, you should train like this: ‘Whenever we encounter it, we will overcome gain … loss … fame … disgrace … honor … dishonor … corrupt wishes … bad friendship.’ That’s how you should train.”
