Progressive Cessation
“‘อนุปุพฺพนิโรโธ, อนุปุพฺพนิโรโธ'ติ, อาวุโส, วุจฺจติฯ กิตฺตาวตา นุ โข, อาวุโส, อนุปุพฺพนิโรโธ วุตฺโต ภควตา”ติ?
“Friend, they speak of ‘progressive cessation’. What is the progressive cessation that the Buddha spoke of?”
“อิธาวุโส, ภิกฺขุ วิวิจฺเจว กาเมหิ …เป… ปฐมํ ฌานํ อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรติฯ เอตฺตาวตาปิ โข, อาวุโส, อนุปุพฺพนิโรโธ วุตฺโต ภควตา ปริยาเยน …เป…ฯ
“First, take a bhikkhu who, quite secluded from sensual pleasures … enters and remains in the first jhāna. To this extent the Buddha spoke of progressive cessation in a qualified sense. …
ปุน จปรํ, อาวุโส, ภิกฺขุ สพฺพโส เนวสญฺญานาสญฺญายตนํ สมติกฺกมฺม สญฺญาเวทยิตนิโรธํ อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรติ, ปญฺญาย จสฺส ทิสฺวา อาสวา ปริกฺขีณา โหนฺติฯ เอตฺตาวตาปิ โข, อาวุโส, อนุปุพฺพนิโรโธ วุตฺโต ภควตา นิปฺปริยาเยนา”ติฯ
Furthermore, take a bhikkhu who, going totally beyond the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception, enters and remains in the cessation of perception and feeling. And, having seen with wisdom, their defilements come to an end. To this extent the Buddha spoke of progressive cessation in a definitive sense.”
