Uposatha
ဧကံ သမယံ ဘဂဝါ သာဝတ္ထိယံ ဝိဟရတိ ပုဗ္ဗာရာမေ မိဂါရမာတုပါသာဒေ၊
At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in the Eastern Monastery, the stilt longhouse of Migāra’s mother.
တေန ခေါ ပန သမယေန ဘဂဝါ တဒဟုပေါသထေ ဘိက္ခုသင်္ဃပရိဝုတော နိသိန္နော ဟောတိ၊ အထ ခေါ အာယသ္မာ အာနန္ဒော အဘိက္ကန္တာယ ရတ္တိယာ, နိက္ခန္တေ ပဌမေ ယာမေ, ဥဋ္ဌာယာသနာ ဧကံသံ ဥတ္တရာသင်္ဂံ ကရိတွာ ယေန ဘဂဝါ တေနဉ္ဇလိံ ပဏာမေတွာ ဘဂဝန္တံ ဧတဒဝေါစ: “အဘိက္ကန္တာ, ဘန္တေ, ရတ္တိ, နိက္ခန္တော ပဌမော ယာမော, စိရနိသိန္နော ဘိက္ခုသင်္ဃော၊ ဥဒ္ဒိသတု, ဘန္တေ, ဘဂဝါ ဘိက္ခူနံ ပါတိမောက္ခန်”တိ၊
Now, at that time it was the Uposatha day, and the Buddha was sitting surrounded by the Saṅgha of monks. And then, as the night was getting late, in the first watch of the night, Venerable Ānanda got up from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his joined palms toward the Buddha and said, “Sir, the night is getting late. It is the first watch of the night, and the Saṅgha of monks has been sitting long. Please, sir, may the Buddha recite the monastic code to the monks.”
ဧဝံ ဝုတ္တေ, ဘဂဝါ တုဏှီ အဟောသိ၊
But when he said this, the Buddha kept silent.
ဒုတိယမ္ပိ ခေါ အာယသ္မာ အာနန္ဒော အဘိက္ကန္တာယ ရတ္တိယာ, နိက္ခန္တေ မဇ္ဈိမေ ယာမေ, ဥဋ္ဌာယာသနာ ဧကံသံ ဥတ္တရာသင်္ဂံ ကရိတွာ ယေန ဘဂဝါ တေနဉ္ဇလိံ ပဏာမေတွာ ဘဂဝန္တံ ဧတဒဝေါစ: “အဘိက္ကန္တာ, ဘန္တေ, ရတ္တိ, နိက္ခန္တော မဇ္ဈိမော ယာမော, စိရနိသိန္နော ဘိက္ခုသင်္ဃော၊ ဥဒ္ဒိသတု, ဘန္တေ, ဘဂဝါ ဘိက္ခူနံ ပါတိမောက္ခန်”တိ၊
For a second time, as the night was getting late, in the middle watch of the night, Ānanda got up from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his joined palms toward the Buddha and said, “Sir, the night is getting late. It is the middle watch of the night, and the Saṅgha of monks has been sitting long. Please, sir, may the Buddha recite the monastic code to the monks.”
ဒုတိယမ္ပိ ခေါ ဘဂဝါ တုဏှီ အဟောသိ၊
But for a second time the Buddha kept silent.
တတိယမ္ပိ ခေါ အာယသ္မာ အာနန္ဒော အဘိက္ကန္တာယ ရတ္တိယာ, နိက္ခန္တေ ပစ္ဆိမေ ယာမေ, ဥဒ္ဓသ္တေ အရုဏေ, နန္ဒိမုခိယာ ရတ္တိယာ ဥဋ္ဌာယာသနာ ဧကံသံ ဥတ္တရာသင်္ဂံ ကရိတွာ ယေန ဘဂဝါ တေနဉ္ဇလိံ ပဏာမေတွာ ဘဂဝန္တံ ဧတဒဝေါစ: “အဘိက္ကန္တာ, ဘန္တေ, ရတ္တိ, နိက္ခန္တော ပစ္ဆိမော ယာမော, ဥဒ္ဓသ္တံ အရုဏံ, နန္ဒိမုခီ ရတ္တိ; စိရနိသိန္နော ဘိက္ခုသင်္ဃော၊ ဥဒ္ဒိသတု, ဘန္တေ, ဘဂဝါ ဘိက္ခူနံ ပါတိမောက္ခန်”တိ၊
For a third time, as the night was getting late, in the last watch of the night, as dawn stirred, bringing joy to the night, Ānanda got up from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his joined palms toward the Buddha and said, “Sir, the night is getting late. It is the last watch of the night and dawn stirs, bringing joy to the night. And the Saṅgha has been sitting long. Please, sir, may the Buddha recite the monastic code to the monks.”
“အပရိသုဒ္ဓါ, အာနန္ဒ, ပရိသာ”တိ၊
“Ānanda, the assembly is not pure.”
အထ ခေါ အာယသ္မတော မဟာမောဂ္ဂလ္လာနဿ ဧတဒဟောသိ: “ကံ နု ခေါ ဘဂဝါ ပုဂ္ဂလံ သန္ဓာယ ဧဝမာဟ: ‘အပရိသုဒ္ဓါ, အာနန္ဒ, ပရိသာ'”တိ?
Then Venerable Mahāmoggallāna thought, “Who is the Buddha talking about?”
အထ ခေါ အာယသ္မာ မဟာမောဂ္ဂလ္လာနော သဗ္ဗာဝန္တံ ဘိက္ခုသင်္ဃံ စေတသာ စေတော ပရိစ္စ မနသာကာသိ၊ အဒ္ဒသာ ခေါ အာယသ္မာ မဟာမောဂ္ဂလ္လာနော တံ ပုဂ္ဂလံ ဒုဿီလံ ပါပဓမ္မံ အသုစိံ သင်္ကဿရသမာစာရံ ပဋိစ္ဆန္နကမ္မန္တံ အဿမဏံ သမဏပဋိညံ အဗြဟ္မစာရိံ ဗြဟ္မစာရိပဋိညံ အန္တောပူတိံ အဝဿုတံ ကသမ္ဗုဇာတံ မဇ္ဈေ ဘိက္ခုသင်္ဃဿ နိသိန္နံ;
Then he focused on comprehending the minds of everyone in the Saṅgha. He saw that unethical person, of bad qualities, filthy, with suspicious behavior, underhand, no true ascetic or spiritual practitioner—though claiming to be one—rotten inside, corrupt, and depraved, sitting in the middle of the Saṅgha.
ဒိသွာန ဥဋ္ဌာယာသနာ ယေန သော ပုဂ္ဂလော တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ တံ ပုဂ္ဂလံ ဧတဒဝေါစ: “ဥဋ္ဌေဟာဝုသော, ဒိဋ္ဌောသိ ဘဂဝတာ၊ နတ္ထိ တေ ဘိက္ခူဟိ သဒ္ဓိံ သံဝါသော”တိ၊
When he saw him he got up from his seat, went up to him and said, “Get up, friend. The Buddha has seen you. You can’t live in communion with the monks.”
ဧဝံ ဝုတ္တေ, သော ပုဂ္ဂလော တုဏှီ အဟောသိ၊
But when he said this, that person kept silent.
ဒုတိယမ္ပိ ခေါ အာယသ္မာ မဟာမောဂ္ဂလ္လာနော တံ ပုဂ္ဂလံ ဧတဒဝေါစ: “ဥဋ္ဌေဟာဝုသော, ဒိဋ္ဌောသိ ဘဂဝတာ၊ နတ္ထိ တေ ဘိက္ခူဟိ သဒ္ဓိံ သံဝါသော”တိ၊ ဒုတိယမ္ပိ ခေါ သော ပုဂ္ဂလော တုဏှီ အဟောသိ၊
For a second time
တတိယမ္ပိ ခေါ အာယသ္မာ မဟာမောဂ္ဂလ္လာနော တံ ပုဂ္ဂလံ ဧတဒဝေါစ: “ဥဋ္ဌေဟာဝုသော, ဒိဋ္ဌောသိ ဘဂဝတာ၊ နတ္ထိ တေ ဘိက္ခူဟိ သဒ္ဓိံ သံဝါသော”တိ၊
and a third time, he asked that monk to leave.
တတိယမ္ပိ ခေါ သော ပုဂ္ဂလော တုဏှီ အဟောသိ၊
But for a third time that person kept silent.
အထ ခေါ အာယသ္မာ မဟာမောဂ္ဂလ္လာနော တံ ပုဂ္ဂလံ ဗာဟာယံ ဂဟေတွာ ဗဟိဒွါရကောဋ္ဌကာ နိက္ခာမေတွာ သူစိဃဋိကံ ဒတွာ ယေန ဘဂဝါ တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ဘဂဝန္တံ ဧတဒဝေါစ: “နိက္ခာမိတော သော, ဘန္တေ, ပုဂ္ဂလော မယာ၊ ပရိသုဒ္ဓါ ပရိသာ၊ ဥဒ္ဒိသတု, ဘန္တေ, ဘဂဝါ ဘိက္ခူနံ ပါတိမောက္ခန်”တိ၊
Then Venerable Mahāmoggallāna took that person by the arm, ejected him out the gate, and bolted the door. Then he went up to the Buddha, and said to him, “I have ejected that person. The assembly is pure. Please, sir, may the Buddha recite the monastic code to the monks.”
“အစ္ဆရိယံ, မောဂ္ဂလ္လာန, အဗ္ဘုတံ, မောဂ္ဂလ္လာန၊ ယာဝ ဗာဟာ ဂဟဏာပိ နာမ သော မောဃပုရိသော အာဂမိဿတီ”တိ၊
“It’s incredible, Moggallāna, it’s amazing, how that silly man waited to be taken by the arm!”
အထ ခေါ ဘဂဝါ ဘိက္ခူ အာမန္တေသိ:
Then the Buddha said to the monks:
“တုမှေဝ ဒါနိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဥပေါသထံ ကရေယျာထ, ပါတိမောက္ခံ ဥဒ္ဒိသေယျာထ၊ န ဒါနာဟံ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အဇ္ဇတဂ္ဂေ ဥပေါသထံ ကရိဿာမိ, ပါတိမောက္ခံ ဥဒ္ဒိသိဿာမိ၊ အဋ္ဌာနမေတံ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အနဝကာသော ယံ တထာဂတော အပရိသုဒ္ဓါယ ပရိသာယ ပါတိမောက္ခံ ဥဒ္ဒိသေယျ၊
“Now, monks, you should perform the Uposatha day and recite the monastic code. From this day forth, I will not perform the Uposatha day or recite the monastic code. It’s impossible, monks, it can’t happen that a Realized One could recite the monastic code in an impure assembly.
အဋ္ဌိမေ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေ အစ္ဆရိယာ အဗ္ဘုတာ ဓမ္မာ, ယေ ဒိသွာ ဒိသွာ အသုရာ မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေ အဘိရမန္တိ၊ ကတမေ အဋ္ဌ? မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အနုပုဗ္ဗနိန္နော အနုပုဗ္ဗပေါဏော အနုပုဗ္ဗပဗ္ဘာရော, န အာယတကေနေဝ ပပါတော၊ ယမ္ပိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေါ အနုပုဗ္ဗနိန္နော အနုပုဗ္ဗပေါဏော အနုပုဗ္ဗပဗ္ဘာရော, န အာယတကေနေဝ ပပါတော; အယံ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေ ပဌမော အစ္ဆရိယော အဗ္ဘုတော ဓမ္မော, ယံ ဒိသွာ ဒိသွာ အသုရာ မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေ အဘိရမန္တိ (ယထာ ပုရိမေ တထာ ဝိတ္ထာရော၊)
Seeing these eight incredible and amazing things the demons love the ocean. What eight? The ocean gradually slants, slopes, and inclines, with no abrupt precipice. This is the first thing the demons love about the ocean.

Furthermore, many great beings live in the ocean, such as leviathans, leviathan-gulpers, leviathan-gulper-gulpers, demons, dragons, and centaurs. In the ocean there are life-forms a hundred leagues long, or even two hundred, three hundred, four hundred, or five hundred leagues long. This is the eighth thing the demons love about the ocean. Seeing these eight incredible and amazing things the demons love the ocean.
ဧဝမေဝံ ခေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အဋ္ဌ ဣမသ္မိံ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ အစ္ဆရိယာ အဗ္ဘုတာ ဓမ္မာ, ယေ ဒိသွာ ဒိသွာ ဘိက္ခူ ဣမသ္မိံ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ အဘိရမန္တိ၊ ကတမေ အဋ္ဌ?
In the same way, seeing eight incredible and amazing things, bhikkhus, the bhikkhus love this teaching and training. What eight?
သေယျထာပိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေါ အနုပုဗ္ဗနိန္နော အနုပုဗ္ဗပေါဏော အနုပုဗ္ဗပဗ္ဘာရော, န အာယတကေနေဝ ပပါတော; ဧဝမေဝံ ခေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဣမသ္မိံ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ အနုပုဗ္ဗသိက္ခာ အနုပုဗ္ဗကိရိယာ အနုပုဗ္ဗပဋိပဒါ, န အာယတကေနေဝ အညာပဋိဝေဓော၊ ယမ္ပိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဣမသ္မိံ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ အနုပုဗ္ဗသိက္ခာ အနုပုဗ္ဗကိရိယာ အနုပုဗ္ဗပဋိပဒါ, န အာယတကေနေဝ အညာပဋိဝေဓော; အယံ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဣမသ္မိံ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ ပဌမော အစ္ဆရိယော အဗ္ဘုတော ဓမ္မော, ယံ ဒိသွာ ဒိသွာ ဘိက္ခူ ဣမသ္မိံ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ အဘိရမန္တိ …ပေ…
The ocean gradually slants, slopes, and inclines, with no abrupt precipice. In the same way in this teaching and training the penetration to enlightenment comes from gradual training, progress, and practice, not abruptly. This is the first thing the bhikkhus love about this teaching and training. …

Many great beings live in the ocean, such as leviathans, leviathan-gulpers, leviathan-gulper-gulpers, demons, dragons, and centaurs. In the ocean there are life-forms a hundred leagues long, or even two hundred, three hundred, four hundred, or five hundred leagues long. In the same way, great beings live in this teaching and training, and these are those beings. The stream-enterer and the one practicing to realize the fruit of stream-entry. The once-returner and the one practicing to realize the fruit of once-return. The non-returner and the one practicing to realize the fruit of non-return. The perfected one, and the one practicing for perfection. This is the eighth thing the bhikkhus love about this teaching and training.
