ပဟာရာဒသုတ္တ
With Pahārāda
ဧကံ သမယံ ဘဂဝါ ဝေရဉ္ဇာယံ ဝိဟရတိ နဠေရုပုစိမန္ဒမူလေ၊
At one time the Buddha was staying in Verañja at the root of a neem tree dedicated to Naḷeru.
အထ ခေါ ပဟာရာဒေါ အသုရိန္ဒော ယေန ဘဂဝါ တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ဘဂဝန္တံ အဘိဝါဒေတွာ ဧကမန္တံ အဋ္ဌာသိ၊ ဧကမန္တံ ဌိတံ ခေါ ပဟာရာဒံ အသုရိန္ဒံ ဘဂဝါ ဧတဒဝေါစ: “အပိ ပန, ပဟာရာဒ, အသုရာ မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေ အဘိရမန္တီ”တိ?
Then Pahārāda, lord of demons, went up to the Buddha, bowed, and stood to one side. The Buddha said to him, “Well, Pahārāda, do the demons love the ocean?”
“အဘိရမန္တိ, ဘန္တေ, အသုရာ မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေ”တိ၊
“Sir, they do indeed.”
“ကတိ ပန, ပဟာရာဒ, မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေ အစ္ဆရိယာ အဗ္ဘုတာ ဓမ္မာ, ယေ ဒိသွာ ဒိသွာ အသုရာ မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေ အဘိရမန္တီ”တိ?
“But seeing what incredible and amazing things do the demons love the ocean?”
“အဋ္ဌ, ဘန္တေ, မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေ အစ္ဆရိယာ အဗ္ဘုတာ ဓမ္မာ, ယေ ဒိသွာ ဒိသွာ အသုရာ မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေ အဘိရမန္တိ၊ ကတမေ အဋ္ဌ? မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေါ, ဘန္တေ, အနုပုဗ္ဗနိန္နော အနုပုဗ္ဗပေါဏော အနုပုဗ္ဗပဗ္ဘာရော, န အာယတကေနေဝ ပပါတော၊ ယမ္ပိ, ဘန္တေ, မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေါ အနုပုဗ္ဗနိန္နော အနုပုဗ္ဗပေါဏော အနုပုဗ္ဗပဗ္ဘာရော, န အာယတကေနေဝ ပပါတော; အယံ, ဘန္တေ, မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေ ပဌမော အစ္ဆရိယော အဗ္ဘုတော ဓမ္မော, ယံ ဒိသွာ ဒိသွာ အသုရာ မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေ အဘိရမန္တိ၊
“Sir, seeing eight incredible and amazing things the demons love the ocean. What eight? The ocean gradually slants, slopes, and inclines, with no abrupt precipice. This is the first thing the demons love about the ocean.
ပုန စပရံ, ဘန္တေ, မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေါ ဌိတဓမ္မော ဝေလံ နာတိဝတ္တတိ၊ ယမ္ပိ, ဘန္တေ, မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေါ ဌိတဓမ္မော ဝေလံ နာတိဝတ္တတိ; အယံ, ဘန္တေ, မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေ ဒုတိယော အစ္ဆရိယော အဗ္ဘုတော ဓမ္မော ယံ ဒိသွာ ဒိသွာ အသုရာ မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေ အဘိရမန္တိ၊
Furthermore, the ocean is consistent and doesn’t overflow its boundaries. This is the second thing the demons love about the ocean.
ပုန စပရံ, ဘန္တေ, မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေါ န မတေန ကုဏပေန သံဝသတိ၊ ယံ ဟောတိ မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေ မတံ ကုဏပံ, တံ ခိပ္ပမေဝ တီရံ ဝါဟေတိ, ထလံ ဥဿာရေတိ၊ ယမ္ပိ, ဘန္တေ, မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေါ န မတေန ကုဏပေန သံဝသတိ, ယံ ဟောတိ မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေ မတံ ကုဏပံ, တံ ခိပ္ပမေဝ တီရံ ဝါဟေတိ, ထလံ ဥဿာရေတိ; အယံ, ဘန္တေ, မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေ တတိယော အစ္ဆရိယော အဗ္ဘုတော ဓမ္မော, ယံ ဒိသွာ ဒိသွာ အသုရာ မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေ အဘိရမန္တိ၊
Furthermore, the ocean doesn’t accommodate a carcass, but quickly carries it to the shore and strands it on the beach. This is the third thing the demons love about the ocean.
ပုန စပရံ, ဘန္တေ, ယာ ကာစိ မဟာနဒိယော, သေယျထိဒံ—ဂင်္ဂါ ယမုနာ အစိရဝတီ သရဘူ မဟီ, တာ မဟာသမုဒ္ဒံ ပတွာ ဇဟန္တိ ပုရိမာနိ နာမဂေါတ္တာနိ, ‘မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေါ' တွေဝ သင်္ခံ ဂစ္ဆန္တိ၊ ယမ္ပိ, ဘန္တေ, ယာ ကာစိ မဟာနဒိယော, သေယျထိဒံ—ဂင်္ဂါ ယမုနာ အစိရဝတီ သရဘူ မဟီ, တာ မဟာသမုဒ္ဒံ ပတွာ ဇဟန္တိ ပုရိမာနိ နာမဂေါတ္တာနိ, ‘မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေါ' တွေဝ သင်္ခံ ဂစ္ဆန္တိ; အယံ, ဘန္တေ, မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေ စတုတ္ထော အစ္ဆရိယော အဗ္ဘုတော ဓမ္မော, ယံ ဒိသွာ ဒိသွာ အသုရာ မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေ အဘိရမန္တိ၊
Furthermore, when they reach the ocean, all the great rivers—that is, the Ganges, Yamunā, Aciravatī, Sarabhū, and Mahī—lose their names and clans and are simply considered ‘the ocean’. This is the fourth thing the demons love about the ocean.

Furthermore, for all the world’s streams that reach it, and the rain that falls from the sky, the ocean never empties or fills up. This is the fifth thing the demons love about the ocean.

Furthermore, the ocean has just one taste, the taste of salt. This is the sixth thing the demons love about the ocean.

Furthermore, the ocean is full of many kinds of treasures, such as pearls, gems, beryl, conch, quartz, coral, silver, gold, rubies, and emeralds. This is the seventh thing the demons love about the ocean.

Furthermore, many great beings live in the ocean, such as leviathans, leviathan-gulpers, leviathan-gulper-gulpers, demons, dragons, and centaurs. In the ocean there are life-forms a hundred leagues long, or even two hundred, three hundred, four hundred, or five hundred leagues long. This is the eighth thing the demons love about the ocean.

Seeing these eight incredible and amazing things the demons love the ocean.
အပိ ပန, ဘန္တေ, ဘိက္ခူ ဣမသ္မိံ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ အဘိရမန္တီ”တိ?
Well, sir, do the bhikkhus love this teaching and training?”
“အဘိရမန္တိ, ပဟာရာဒ, ဘိက္ခူ ဣမသ္မိံ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ”တိ၊
“They do indeed, Pahārāda.”
“ကတိ ပန, ဘန္တေ, ဣမသ္မိံ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ အစ္ဆရိယာ အဗ္ဘုတာ ဓမ္မာ, ယေ ဒိသွာ ဒိသွာ ဘိက္ခူ ဣမသ္မိံ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ အဘိရမန္တီ”တိ?
“But seeing how many incredible and amazing things do the bhikkhus love this teaching and training?”
“အဋ္ဌ, ပဟာရာဒ, ဣမသ္မိံ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ အစ္ဆရိယာ အဗ္ဘုတာ ဓမ္မာ, ယေ ဒိသွာ ဒိသွာ ဘိက္ခူ ဣမသ္မိံ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ အဘိရမန္တိ၊ ကတမေ အဋ္ဌ?
“Seeing eight incredible and amazing things, Pahārāda, the bhikkhus love this teaching and training. What eight?
သေယျထာပိ, ပဟာရာဒ, မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေါ အနုပုဗ္ဗနိန္နော အနုပုဗ္ဗပေါဏော အနုပုဗ္ဗပဗ္ဘာရော, န အာယတကေနေဝ ပပါတော; ဧဝမေဝံ ခေါ, ပဟာရာဒ, ဣမသ္မိံ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ အနုပုဗ္ဗသိက္ခာ အနုပုဗ္ဗကိရိယာ အနုပုဗ္ဗပဋိပဒါ, န အာယတကေနေဝ အညာပဋိဝေဓော၊ ယမ္ပိ, ပဟာရာဒ, ဣမသ္မိံ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ အနုပုဗ္ဗသိက္ခာ အနုပုဗ္ဗကိရိယာ အနုပုဗ္ဗပဋိပဒါ, န အာယတကေနေဝ အညာပဋိဝေဓော; အယံ, ပဟာရာဒ, ဣမသ္မိံ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ ပဌမော အစ္ဆရိယော အဗ္ဘုတော ဓမ္မော, ယံ ဒိသွာ ဒိသွာ ဘိက္ခူ ဣမသ္မိံ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ အဘိရမန္တိ၊
The ocean gradually slants, slopes, and inclines, with no abrupt precipice. In the same way in this teaching and training the penetration to enlightenment comes from gradual training, progress, and practice, not abruptly. This is the first thing the bhikkhus love about this teaching and training.
သေယျထာပိ, ပဟာရာဒ, မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေါ ဌိတဓမ္မော ဝေလံ နာတိဝတ္တတိ; ဧဝမေဝံ ခေါ, ပဟာရာဒ, ယံ မယာ သာဝကာနံ သိက္ခာပဒံ ပညတ္တံ တံ မမ သာဝကာ ဇီဝိတဟေတုပိ နာတိက္ကမန္တိ၊ ယမ္ပိ, ပဟာရာဒ, မယာ သာဝကာနံ သိက္ခာပဒံ ပညတ္တံ တံ မမ သာဝကာ ဇီဝိတဟေတုပိ နာတိက္ကမန္တိ; အယံ, ပဟာရာဒ, ဣမသ္မိံ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ ဒုတိယော အစ္ဆရိယော အဗ္ဘုတော ဓမ္မော, ယံ ဒိသွာ ဒိသွာ ဘိက္ခူ ဣမသ္မိံ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ အဘိရမန္တိ၊
The ocean is consistent and doesn’t overflow its boundaries. In the same way, when a training rule is laid down for my disciples they wouldn’t break it even for the sake of their own life. This is the second thing the bhikkhus love about this teaching and training.
သေယျထာပိ, ပဟာရာဒ, မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေါ န မတေန ကုဏပေန သံဝသတိ၊ ယံ ဟောတိ မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေ မတံ ကုဏပံ, တံ ခိပ္ပမေဝ တီရံ ဝါဟေတိ ထလံ ဥဿာရေတိ; ဧဝမေဝံ ခေါ, ပဟာရာဒ, ယော သော ပုဂ္ဂလော ဒုဿီလော ပါပဓမ္မော အသုစိသင်္ကဿရသမာစာရော ပဋိစ္ဆန္နကမ္မန္တော အဿမဏော သမဏပဋိညော အဗြဟ္မစာရီ ဗြဟ္မစာရိပဋိညော အန္တောပူတိ အဝဿုတော ကသမ္ဗုဇာတော, န တေန သင်္ဃော သံဝသတိ; ခိပ္ပမေဝ နံ သန္နိပတိတွာ ဥက္ခိပတိ၊ ကိဉ္စာပိ သော ဟောတိ မဇ္ဈေ ဘိက္ခုသင်္ဃဿ သန္နိသိန္နော, အထ ခေါ သော အာရကာဝ သင်္ဃမှာ သင်္ဃော စ တေန၊ ယမ္ပိ, ပဟာရာဒ, ယော သော ပုဂ္ဂလော ဒုဿီလော ပါပဓမ္မော အသုစိသင်္ကဿရသမာစာရော ပဋိစ္ဆန္နကမ္မန္တော အဿမဏော သမဏပဋိညော အဗြဟ္မစာရီ ဗြဟ္မစာရိပဋိညော အန္တောပူတိ အဝဿုတော ကသမ္ဗုဇာတော, န တေန သင်္ဃော သံဝသတိ; ခိပ္ပမေဝ နံ သန္နိပတိတွာ ဥက္ခိပတိ; ကိဉ္စာပိ သော ဟောတိ မဇ္ဈေ ဘိက္ခုသင်္ဃဿ သန္နိသိန္နော, အထ ခေါ သော အာရကာဝ သင်္ဃမှာ သင်္ဃော စ တေန; အယံ, ပဟာရာဒ, ဣမသ္မိံ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ တတိယော အစ္ဆရိယော အဗ္ဘုတော ဓမ္မော, ယံ ဒိသွာ ဒိသွာ ဘိက္ခူ ဣမသ္မိံ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ အဘိရမန္တိ၊
The ocean doesn’t accommodate a carcass, but quickly carries it to the shore and strands it on the beach. In the same way, the Saṅgha doesn’t accommodate a person who is unethical, of bad qualities, filthy, with suspicious behavior, underhand, no true ascetic or spiritual practitioner—though claiming to be one—rotten inside, corrupt, and depraved. But they quickly gather and expel them. Even if such a person is sitting in the middle of the Saṅgha, they’re far from the Saṅgha, and the Saṅgha is far from them. This is the third thing the bhikkhus love about this teaching and training.
သေယျထာပိ, ပဟာရာဒ, ယာ ကာစိ မဟာနဒိယော, သေယျထိဒံ—ဂင်္ဂါ ယမုနာ အစိရဝတီ သရဘူ မဟီ, တာ မဟာသမုဒ္ဒံ ပတွာ ဇဟန္တိ ပုရိမာနိ နာမဂေါတ္တာနိ, ‘မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေါ' တွေဝ သင်္ခံ ဂစ္ဆန္တိ; ဧဝမေဝံ ခေါ, ပဟာရာဒ, စတ္တာရောမေ ဝဏ္ဏာ—ခတ္တိယာ, ဗြာဟ္မဏာ, ဝေဿာ, သုဒ္ဒါ, တေ တထာဂတပ္ပဝေဒိတေ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ အဂါရသ္မာ အနဂါရိယံ ပဗ္ဗဇိတွာ ဇဟန္တိ ပုရိမာနိ နာမဂေါတ္တာနိ, ‘သမဏာ သကျပုတ္တိယာ' တွေဝ သင်္ခံ ဂစ္ဆန္တိ၊ ယမ္ပိ, ပဟာရာဒ, စတ္တာရောမေ ဝဏ္ဏာ—ခတ္တိယာ, ဗြာဟ္မဏာ, ဝေဿာ, သုဒ္ဒါ, တေ တထာဂတပ္ပဝေဒိတေ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ အဂါရသ္မာ အနဂါရိယံ ပဗ္ဗဇိတွာ ဇဟန္တိ ပုရိမာနိ နာမဂေါတ္တာနိ, ‘သမဏာ သကျပုတ္တိယာ' တွေဝ သင်္ခံ ဂစ္ဆန္တိ; အယံ, ပဟာရာဒ, ဣမသ္မိံ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ စတုတ္ထော အစ္ဆရိယော အဗ္ဘုတော ဓမ္မော, ယံ ဒိသွာ ဒိသွာ ဘိက္ခူ ဣမသ္မိံ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ အဘိရမန္တိ၊
When they reach the ocean, all the great rivers—that is, the Ganges, Yamunā, Aciravatī, Sarabhū, and Mahī—lose their names and clans and are simply considered ‘the ocean’. In the same way, when they go forth from the lay life to homelessness, all four castes—khattiya persons, brahmins, peasants, and menials—lose their former names and clans and are simply considered ‘Sakyan ascetics’. This is the fourth thing the bhikkhus love about this teaching and training.
သေယျထာပိ, ပဟာရာဒ, ယာ စ လောကေ သဝန္တိယော မဟာသမုဒ္ဒံ အပ္ပေန္တိ ယာ စ အန္တလိက္ခာ ဓာရာ ပပတန္တိ, န တေန မဟာသမုဒ္ဒဿ ဦနတ္တံ ဝါ ပူရတ္တံ ဝါ ပညာယတိ; ဧဝမေဝံ ခေါ, ပဟာရာဒ, ဗဟူ စေပိ ဘိက္ခူ အနုပါဒိသေသာယ နိဗ္ဗာနဓာတုယာ ပရိနိဗ္ဗာယန္တိ, န တေန နိဗ္ဗာနဓာတုယာ ဦနတ္တံ ဝါ ပူရတ္တံ ဝါ ပညာယတိ၊ ယမ္ပိ, ပဟာရာဒ, ဗဟူ စေပိ ဘိက္ခူ အနုပါဒိသေသာယ နိဗ္ဗာနဓာတုယာ ပရိနိဗ္ဗာယန္တိ, န တေန နိဗ္ဗာနဓာတုယာ ဦနတ္တံ ဝါ ပူရတ္တံ ဝါ ပညာယတိ; အယံ, ပဟာရာဒ, ဣမသ္မိံ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ ပဉ္စမော အစ္ဆရိယော အဗ္ဘုတော ဓမ္မော, ယံ ဒိသွာ ဒိသွာ ဘိက္ခူ ဣမသ္မိံ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ အဘိရမန္တိ၊
For all the world’s streams that reach it, and the rain that falls from the sky, the ocean never empties or fills up. In the same way, though several bhikkhus become fully extinguished in the element of Nibbana with nothing left over, the element of Nibbana never empties or fills up. This is the fifth thing the bhikkhus love about this teaching and training.
သေယျထာပိ, ပဟာရာဒ, မဟာသမုဒ္ဒေါ ဧကရသော လောဏရသော; ဧဝမေဝံ ခေါ, ပဟာရာဒ, အယံ ဓမ္မဝိနယော ဧကရသော, ဝိမုတ္တိရသော၊ ယမ္ပိ, ပဟာရာဒ, အယံ ဓမ္မဝိနယော ဧကရသော, ဝိမုတ္တိရသော; အယံ, ပဟာရာဒ, ဣမသ္မိံ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ ဆဋ္ဌော အစ္ဆရိယော အဗ္ဘုတော ဓမ္မော, ယံ ဒိသွာ ဒိသွာ ဘိက္ခူ ဣမသ္မိံ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ အဘိရမန္တိ၊
The ocean has just one taste, the taste of salt. In the same way, this teaching and training has one taste, the taste of freedom. This is the sixth thing the bhikkhus love about this teaching and training.

The ocean is full of many kinds of treasures, such as pearls, gems, beryl, conch, quartz, coral, silver, gold, rubies, and emeralds. In the same way, this teaching and training is full of many kinds of treasures, such as the four kinds of mindfulness meditation, the four right efforts, the four bases of psychic power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven awakening factors, and the noble eightfold path. This is the seventh thing the bhikkhus love about this teaching and training.

Many great beings live in the ocean, such as leviathans, leviathan-gulpers, leviathan-gulper-gulpers, demons, dragons, and centaurs. In the ocean there are life-forms a hundred leagues long, or even two hundred, three hundred, four hundred, or five hundred leagues long. In the same way, great beings live in this teaching and training, and these are those beings. The stream-enterer and the one practicing to realize the fruit of stream-entry. The once-returner and the one practicing to realize the fruit of once-return. The non-returner and the one practicing to realize the fruit of non-return. The perfected one, and the one practicing for perfection. This is the eighth thing the bhikkhus love about this teaching and training.
