A Charnel Ground
“පඤ්චිමේ, භික්ඛවේ, ආදීනවා සිවථිකාය. කතමේ පඤ්ච?
“Bhikkhus, there are these five drawbacks to a charnel ground. What five?
අසුචි, දුග්ගන්ධා, සප්පටිභයා, වාළානං අමනුස්සානං ආවාසෝ, බහුනෝ ජනස්ස ආරෝදනා—ඉමේ ඛෝ, භික්ඛවේ, පඤ්ච ආදීනවා සිවථිකාය.
It’s filthy, stinking, frightening, a gathering place for savage monsters, and a weeping place for many people. These are the five drawbacks of a charnel ground.
ඒවමේවං ඛෝ, භික්ඛවේ, පඤ්චිමේ ආදීනවා සිවථිකූපමේ පුග්ගලේ. කතමේ පඤ්ච? ඉධ, භික්ඛවේ, ඒකච්චෝ පුග්ගලෝ අසුචිනා කායකම්මේන සමන්නාගතෝ හෝති; අසුචිනා වචීකම්මේන සමන්නාගතෝ හෝති; අසුචිනා මනෝකම්මේන සමන්නාගතෝ හෝති. ඉදමස්ස අසුචිතාය වදාමි. සේය්යථාපි සා, භික්ඛවේ, සිවථිකා අසුචි; තථූපමාහං, භික්ඛවේ, ඉමං පුග්ගලං වදාමි.
In the same way there are five drawbacks of a person like a charnel ground. What five? To start with, some person has filthy conduct by way of body, speech, and mind. This is how they’re filthy, I say. That person is just as filthy as a charnel ground.
තස්ස අසුචිනා කායකම්මේන සමන්නාගතස්ස, අසුචිනා වචීකම්මේන සමන්නාගතස්ස, අසුචිනා මනෝකම්මේන සමන්නාගතස්ස පාපකෝ කිත්තිසද්දෝ අබ්භුග්ගච්ඡති. ඉදමස්ස දුග්ගන්ධතාය වදාමි. සේය්යථාපි සා, භික්ඛවේ, සිවථිකා දුග්ගන්ධා; තථූපමාහං, භික්ඛවේ, ඉමං පුග්ගලං වදාමි.
Because of their filthy conduct, they get a bad reputation. This is how they’re stinky, I say. That person is just as stinky as a charnel ground.
තමේනං අසුචිනා කායකම්මේන සමන්නාගතං, අසුචිනා වචීකම්මේන සමන්නාගතං, අසුචිනා මනෝකම්මේන සමන්නාගතං පේසලා සබ්රහ්මචාරී ආරකා පරිවජ්ජන්ති. ඉදමස්ස සප්පටිභයස්මිං වදාමි. සේය්යථාපි සා, භික්ඛවේ, සිවථිකා සප්පටිභයා; තථූපමාහං, භික්ඛවේ, ඉමං පුග්ගලං වදාමි.
Because of their filthy conduct, good-hearted spiritual companions avoid them from afar. That’s how they’re frightening, I say. That person is just as frightening as a charnel ground.
සෝ අසුචිනා කායකම්මේන සමන්නාගතෝ, අසුචිනා වචීකම්මේන සමන්නාගතෝ, අසුචිනා මනෝකම්මේන සමන්නාගතෝ සභාගේහි පුග්ගලේහි සද්ධිං සංවසති. ඉදමස්ස වාළාවාසස්මිං වදාමි. සේය්යථාපි සා, භික්ඛවේ, සිවථිකා වාළානං අමනුස්සානං ආවාසෝ; තථූපමාහං, භික්ඛවේ, ඉමං පුග්ගලං වදාමි.
Because of their filthy conduct, they live together with people of a similar character. This is how they gather with savage monsters, I say. That person is just as much a gathering place of savage monsters as a charnel ground.
තමේනං අසුචිනා කායකම්මේන සමන්නාගතං, අසුචිනා වචීකම්මේන සමන්නාගතං, අසුචිනා මනෝකම්මේන සමන්නාගතං පේසලා සබ්රහ්මචාරී දිස්වා ඛීයධම්මං ආපජ්ජන්ති: ‘අහෝ වත නෝ දුක්ඛං යේ මයං ඒවරූපේහි පුග්ගලේහි සද්ධිං සංවසාමා(අ)ති. ඉදමස්ස ආරෝදනාය වදාමි. සේය්යථාපි සා, භික්ඛවේ, සිවථිකා බහුනෝ ජනස්ස ආරෝදනා; තථූපමාහං, භික්ඛවේ, ඉමං පුග්ගලං වදාමි.
Because of their filthy conduct, when good-hearted spiritual companions see them they complain: ‘Oh, it’s so painful for us to have to live together with such as these.’ This is how there’s weeping, I say. This person is just as much a weeping place for many people as a charnel ground.
ඉමේ ඛෝ, භික්ඛවේ, පඤ්ච ආදීනවා සිවථිකූපමේ පුග්ගලේ”ති.
These are the five drawbacks of a person like a charnel ground.”
