သီဟသေနာပတိသုတ္တ
General Sīha
ဧဝံ မေ သုတံ—ဧကံ သမယံ ဘဂဝါ ဝေသာလိယံ ဝိဟရတိ မဟာဝနေ ကူဋာဂါရသာလာယံ၊ အထ ခေါ သီဟော သေနာပတိ ယေန ဘဂဝါ တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ဘဂဝန္တံ အဘိဝါဒေတွာ ဧကမန္တံ နိသီဒိ၊ ဧကမန္တံ နိသိန္နော ခေါ သီဟော သေနာပတိ ဘဂဝန္တံ ဧတဒဝေါစ:
So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Vesālī, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof. Then General Sīha went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
“သက္ကာ နု ခေါ, ဘန္တေ, သန္ဒိဋ္ဌိကံ ဒါနဖလံ ပညာပေတုန်”တိ?
“Sir, can you point out a fruit of giving that’s apparent in the present life?”
“တေန ဟိ, သီဟ, တညေဝေတ္ထ ပဋိပုစ္ဆိဿာမိ, ယထာ တေ ခမေယျ တထာ နံ ဗျာကရေယျာသိ၊ တံ ကိံ မညသိ, သီဟ, ဣဓ ဒွေ ပုရိသာ—ဧကော ပုရိသော အဿဒ္ဓေါ မစ္ဆရီ ကဒရိယော ပရိဘာသကော, ဧကော ပုရိသော သဒ္ဓေါ ဒါနပတိ အနုပ္ပဒါနရတော၊ တံ ကိံ မညသိ, သီဟ, ကံ နု ခေါ အရဟန္တော ပဌမံ အနုကမ္ပန္တာ အနုကမ္ပေယျုံ: ‘ယော ဝါ သော ပုရိသော အဿဒ္ဓေါ မစ္ဆရီ ကဒရိယော ပရိဘာသကော, ယော ဝါ သော ပုရိသော သဒ္ဓေါ ဒါနပတိ အနုပ္ပဒါနရတော'”တိ?
“Well then, Sīha, I’ll ask you about this in return, and you can answer as you like. What do you think, Sīha? Consider two people. One is faithless, stingy, miserly, and abusive. One is a faithful donor who loves charity. Which do you think the perfected ones will show compassion for first?”
“ယော သော, ဘန္တေ, ပုရိသော အဿဒ္ဓေါ မစ္ဆရီ ကဒရိယော ပရိဘာသကော, ကိန္တံ အရဟန္တော ပဌမံ အနုကမ္ပန္တာ အနုကမ္ပိဿန္တိ၊ ယော စ ခေါ သော, ဘန္တေ, ပုရိသော သဒ္ဓေါ ဒါနပတိ အနုပ္ပဒါနရတော တံယေဝ အရဟန္တော ပဌမံ အနုကမ္ပန္တာ အနုကမ္ပေယျုံ”၊
“Why would the perfected ones first show compassion for the person who is faithless, stingy, miserly, and abusive? They’d show compassion first for the faithful donor who loves charity.”
“တံ ကိံ မညသိ, သီဟ, ကံ နု ခေါ အရဟန္တော ပဌမံ ဥပသင်္ကမန္တာ ဥပသင်္ကမေယျုံ: ‘ယော ဝါ သော ပုရိသော အဿဒ္ဓေါ မစ္ဆရီ ကဒရိယော ပရိဘာသကော, ယော ဝါ သော ပုရိသော သဒ္ဓေါ ဒါနပတိ အနုပ္ပဒါနရတော'”တိ? “ယော သော, ဘန္တေ, ပုရိသော အဿဒ္ဓေါ မစ္ဆရီ ကဒရိယော ပရိဘာသကော, ကိန္တံ အရဟန္တော ပဌမံ ဥပသင်္ကမန္တာ ဥပသင်္ကမိဿန္တိ၊ ယော စ ခေါ သော, ဘန္တေ, ပုရိသော သဒ္ဓေါ ဒါနပတိ အနုပ္ပဒါနရတော တံယေဝ အရဟန္တော ပဌမံ ဥပသင်္ကမန္တာ ဥပသင်္ကမေယျုံ”၊
“Which do you think the perfected ones will first approach?” “They’d first approach the faithful donor who loves charity.”
“တံ ကိံ မညသိ, သီဟ, ကဿ နု ခေါ အရဟန္တော ပဌမံ ပဋိဂ္ဂဏှန္တာ ပဋိဂ္ဂဏှေယျုံ: ‘ယော ဝါ သော ပုရိသော အဿဒ္ဓေါ မစ္ဆရီ ကဒရိယော ပရိဘာသကော, ယော ဝါ သော ပုရိသော သဒ္ဓေါ ဒါနပတိ အနုပ္ပဒါနရတော'”တိ? “ယော သော, ဘန္တေ, ပုရိသော အဿဒ္ဓေါ မစ္ဆရီ ကဒရိယော ပရိဘာသကော, ကိန္တံ တဿ အရဟန္တော ပဌမံ ပဋိဂ္ဂဏှန္တာ ပဋိဂ္ဂဏှိဿန္တိ၊ ယော စ ခေါ သော, ဘန္တေ, ပုရိသော သဒ္ဓေါ ဒါနပတိ အနုပ္ပဒါနရတော တဿေဝ အရဟန္တော ပဌမံ ပဋိဂ္ဂဏှန္တာ ပဋိဂ္ဂဏှေယျုံ”၊
“Which do you think the perfected ones will receive alms from first?” “They’d receive alms first from the faithful donor who loves charity.”
“တံ ကိံ မညသိ, သီဟ, ကဿ နု ခေါ အရဟန္တော ပဌမံ ဓမ္မံ ဒေသေန္တာ ဒေသေယျုံ: ‘ယော ဝါ သော ပုရိသော အဿဒ္ဓေါ မစ္ဆရီ ကဒရိယော ပရိဘာသကော, ယော ဝါ သော ပုရိသော သဒ္ဓေါ ဒါနပတိ အနုပ္ပဒါနရတော'”တိ? “ယော သော, ဘန္တေ, ပုရိသော အဿဒ္ဓေါ မစ္ဆရီ ကဒရိယော ပရိဘာသကော, ကိန္တံ တဿ အရဟန္တော ပဌမံ ဓမ္မံ ဒေသေန္တာ ဒေသေဿန္တိ၊ ယော စ ခေါ သော, ဘန္တေ, ပုရိသော သဒ္ဓေါ ဒါနပတိ အနုပ္ပဒါနရတော တဿေဝ အရဟန္တော ပဌမံ ဓမ္မံ ဒေသေန္တာ ဒေသေယျုံ”၊
“Which do you think the perfected ones will teach the Dhamma to first?” “They’d first teach the Dhamma to the faithful donor who loves charity.”
“တံ ကိံ မညသိ, သီဟ, ကဿ နု ခေါ ကလျာဏော ကိတ္တိသဒ္ဒေါ အဗ္ဘုဂ္ဂစ္ဆေယျ: ‘ယော ဝါ သော ပုရိသော အဿဒ္ဓေါ မစ္ဆရီ ကဒရိယော ပရိဘာသကော, ယော ဝါ သော ပုရိသော သဒ္ဓေါ ဒါနပတိ အနုပ္ပဒါနရတော'”တိ? “ယော သော, ဘန္တေ, ပုရိသော အဿဒ္ဓေါ မစ္ဆရီ ကဒရိယော ပရိဘာသကော, ကိန္တံ တဿ ကလျာဏော ကိတ္တိသဒ္ဒေါ အဗ္ဘုဂ္ဂစ္ဆိဿတိ၊ ယော စ ခေါ သော, ဘန္တေ, ပုရိသော သဒ္ဓေါ ဒါနပတိ အနုပ္ပဒါနရတော တဿေဝ ကလျာဏော ကိတ္တိသဒ္ဒေါ အဗ္ဘုဂ္ဂစ္ဆေယျ”၊
“Which do you think would get a good reputation?” “The faithful donor who loves charity would get a good reputation.”
“တံ ကိံ မညသိ, သီဟ, ကော နု ခေါ ယံယဒေဝ ပရိသံ ဥပသင်္ကမေယျ, ယဒိ ခတ္တိယပရိသံ ယဒိ ဗြာဟ္မဏပရိသံ ယဒိ ဂဟပတိပရိသံ ယဒိ သမဏပရိသံ ဝိသာရဒေါ ဥပသင်္ကမေယျ အမင်္ကုဘူတော: ‘ယော ဝါ သော ပုရိသော အဿဒ္ဓေါ မစ္ဆရီ ကဒရိယော ပရိဘာသကော, ယော ဝါ သော ပုရိသော သဒ္ဓေါ ဒါနပတိ အနုပ္ပဒါနရတော'”တိ?
“Which do you think would enter any kind of assembly bold and assured, whether it’s an assembly of khattiya class persons, brahmins, householders, or ascetics?”
“ယော သော, ဘန္တေ, ပုရိသော အဿဒ္ဓေါ မစ္ဆရီ ကဒရိယော ပရိဘာသကော, ကိံ သော ယံယဒေဝ ပရိသံ ဥပသင်္ကမိဿတိ, ယဒိ ခတ္တိယပရိသံ ယဒိ ဗြာဟ္မဏပရိသံ ယဒိ ဂဟပတိပရိသံ ယဒိ သမဏပရိသံ ဝိသာရဒေါ ဥပသင်္ကမိဿတိ အမင်္ကုဘူတော၊ ယော စ ခေါ သော, ဘန္တေ, ပုရိသော သဒ္ဓေါ ဒါနပတိ အနုပ္ပဒါနရတော သော ယံယဒေဝ ပရိသံ ဥပသင်္ကမေယျ, ယဒိ ခတ္တိယပရိသံ ယဒိ ဗြာဟ္မဏပရိသံ ယဒိ ဂဟပတိပရိသံ ယဒိ သမဏပရိသံ ဝိသာရဒေါ ဥပသင်္ကမေယျ အမင်္ကုဘူတော”၊
“How could the person who is faithless, stingy, miserly, and abusive enter any kind of assembly bold and assured, whether it’s an assembly of khattiya class persons, brahmins, householders, or ascetics? The faithful donor who loves charity would enter any kind of assembly bold and assured, whether it’s an assembly of khattiya class persons, brahmins, householders, or ascetics.”
“တံ ကိံ မညသိ, သီဟ, ကော နု ခေါ ကာယဿ ဘေဒါ ပရံ မရဏာ သုဂတိံ သဂ္ဂံ လောကံ ဥပပဇ္ဇေယျ: ‘ယော ဝါ သော ပုရိသော အဿဒ္ဓေါ မစ္ဆရီ ကဒရိယော ပရိဘာသကော, ယော ဝါ သော ပုရိသော သဒ္ဓေါ ဒါနပတိ အနုပ္ပဒါနရတော'”တိ?
“When their body breaks up, after death, which do you think would be reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm?”
“ယော သော, ဘန္တေ, ပုရိသော အဿဒ္ဓေါ မစ္ဆရီ ကဒရိယော ပရိဘာသကော, ကိံ သော ကာယဿ ဘေဒါ ပရံ မရဏာ သုဂတိံ သဂ္ဂံ လောကံ ဥပပဇ္ဇိဿတိ၊ ယော စ ခေါ သော, ဘန္တေ, ပုရိသော သဒ္ဓေါ ဒါနပတိ အနုပ္ပဒါနရတော သော ကာယဿ ဘေဒါ ပရံ မရဏာ သုဂတိံ သဂ္ဂံ လောကံ ဥပပဇ္ဇေယျ၊
“Why would the person who is faithless, stingy, miserly, and abusive be reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm? The faithful donor who loves charity would, when their body breaks up, after death, be reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.
ယာနိမာနိ, ဘန္တေ, ဘဂဝတာ သန္ဒိဋ္ဌိကာနိ ဒါနဖလာနိ အက္ခာတာနိ, နာဟံ ဧတ္ထ ဘဂဝတော သဒ္ဓါယ ဂစ္ဆာမိ၊ အဟမ္ပိ ဧတာနိ ဇာနာမိ၊ အဟံ, ဘန္တေ, ဒါယကော ဒါနပတိ, မံ အရဟန္တော ပဌမံ အနုကမ္ပန္တာ အနုကမ္ပန္တိ၊ အဟံ, ဘန္တေ, ဒါယကော ဒါနပတိ, မံ အရဟန္တော ပဌမံ ဥပသင်္ကမန္တာ ဥပသင်္ကမန္တိ၊ အဟံ, ဘန္တေ, ဒါယကော ဒါနပတိ, မယှံ အရဟန္တော ပဌမံ ပဋိဂ္ဂဏှန္တာ ပဋိဂ္ဂဏှန္တိ၊ အဟံ, ဘန္တေ, ဒါယကော ဒါနပတိ, မယှံ အရဟန္တော ပဌမံ ဓမ္မံ ဒေသေန္တာ ဒေသေန္တိ၊ အဟံ, ဘန္တေ, ဒါယကော ဒါနပတိ, မယှံ ကလျာဏော ကိတ္တိသဒ္ဒေါ အဗ္ဘုဂ္ဂတော: ‘သီဟော သေနာပတိ ဒါယကော ကာရကော သင်္ဃုပဋ္ဌာကော'တိ၊ အဟံ, ဘန္တေ, ဒါယကော ဒါနပတိ ယံယဒေဝ ပရိသံ ဥပသင်္ကမာမိ, ယဒိ ခတ္တိယပရိသံ …ပေ… ယဒိ သမဏပရိသံ ဝိသာရဒေါ ဥပသင်္ကမာမိ အမင်္ကုဘူတော၊ ယာနိမာနိ, ဘန္တေ, ဘဂဝတာ သန္ဒိဋ္ဌိကာနိ ဒါနဖလာနိ အက္ခာတာနိ, နာဟံ ဧတ္ထ ဘဂဝတော သဒ္ဓါယ ဂစ္ဆာမိ၊ အဟမ္ပိ ဧတာနိ ဇာနာမိ၊ ယဉ္စ ခေါ မံ, ဘန္တေ, ဘဂဝါ ဧဝမာဟ: ‘ဒါယကော, သီဟ, ဒါနပတိ ကာယဿ ဘေဒါ ပရံ မရဏာ သုဂတိံ သဂ္ဂံ လောကံ ဥပပဇ္ဇတီ'တိ၊ ဧတာဟံ န ဇာနာမိ, ဧတ္ထ စ ပနာဟံ, ဘဂဝတော သဒ္ဓါယ ဂစ္ဆာမီ”တိ၊
When it comes to these fruits of giving that are apparent in the present life, I don’t have to rely on faith in the Buddha, for I know them too. I’m a giver, a donor, and the perfected ones show compassion for me first. I’m a giver, and the perfected ones approach me first. I’m a giver, and the perfected ones receive alms from me first. I’m a giver, and the perfected ones teach me Dhamma first. I’m a giver, and I have this good reputation: ‘General Sīha gives, serves, and attends on the Saṅgha.’ I’m a giver, I enter any kind of assembly bold and assured, whether it’s an assembly of khattiya class persons, brahmins, householders, or ascetics. When it comes to these fruits of giving that are apparent in the present life, I don’t have to rely on faith in the Buddha, for I know them too. But when the Buddha says: ‘When a giver’s body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.’ I don’t know this, so I have to rely on faith in the Buddha.”
“ဧဝမေတံ, သီဟ, ဧဝမေတံ, သီဟ၊ ဒါယကော, သီဟ, ဒါနပတိ ကာယဿ ဘေဒါ ပရံ မရဏာ သုဂတိံ သဂ္ဂံ လောကံ ဥပပဇ္ဇတီ”တိ၊
“That’s so true, Sīha! That’s so true! When a giver’s body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.”
