สมณพฺราหฺมณสุตฺต
Ascetics and Brahmins
“เย เกจิ, ภิกฺขเว, สมณา วา พฺราหฺมณา วา โลกสฺส อสฺสาทญฺจ อสฺสาทโต อาทีนวญฺจ อาทีนวโต นิสฺสรณญฺจ นิสฺสรณโต ยถาภูตํ นปฺปชานนฺติ, น เม เต, ภิกฺขเว, สมณา วา พฺราหฺมณา วา สมเณสุ วา สมณสมฺมตา พฺราหฺมเณสุ วา พฺราหฺมณสมฺมตา, น จ ปน เต อายสฺมนฺโต สามญฺญตฺถํ วา พฺรหฺมญฺญตฺถํ วา ทิฏฺเฐว ธมฺเม สยํ อภิญฺญา สจฺฉิกตฺวา อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรนฺติฯ
“Bhikkhus, there are ascetics and brahmins who don’t truly understand the world’s gratification, drawback, and escape for what they are. I don’t deem them as true ascetics and brahmins. Those venerables don’t realize the goal of life as an ascetic or brahmin, and don’t live having realized it with their own insight.
เย จ โข เกจิ, ภิกฺขเว, สมณา วา พฺราหฺมณา วา โลกสฺส อสฺสาทญฺจ อสฺสาทโต อาทีนวญฺจ อาทีนวโต นิสฺสรณญฺจ นิสฺสรณโต ยถาภูตํ ปชานนฺติ, เต โข, ภิกฺขเว, สมณา วา พฺราหฺมณา วา สมเณสุ วา สมณสมฺมตา พฺราหฺมเณสุ วา พฺราหฺมณสมฺมตา, เต จ ปนายสฺมนฺโต สามญฺญตฺถญฺจ พฺรหฺมญฺญตฺถญฺจ ทิฏฺเฐว ธมฺเม สยํ อภิญฺญา สจฺฉิกตฺวา อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรนฺตี”ติฯ
There are ascetics and brahmins who do truly understand the world’s gratification, drawback, and escape for what they are. I deem them as true ascetics and brahmins. Those venerables realize the goal of life as an ascetic or brahmin, and live having realized it with their own insight.”
