11. Awakening
ปุพฺเพวสมฺโพธสุตฺต
Before Awakening
“ปุพฺเพว เม, ภิกฺขเว, สมฺโพธา อนภิสมฺพุทฺธสฺส โพธิสตฺตเสฺสว สโต เอตทโหสิ: ‘โก นุ โข โลเก อสฺสาโท, โก อาทีนโว, กึ นิสฺสรณนฺ'ติ?
“Bhikkhus, before my awakening—when I was still unawakened but intent on awakening—I thought: ‘What’s the gratification in the world? What’s the drawback? What’s the escape?’
ตสฺส มยฺหํ, ภิกฺขเว, เอตทโหสิ: ‘ยํ โข โลกํ ปฏิจฺจ อุปฺปชฺชติ สุขํ โสมนสฺสํ, อยํ โลเก อสฺสาโทฯ
Then it occurred to me: ‘The pleasure and happiness that arise from the world: this is its gratification.
ยํ โลโก อนิจฺโจ ทุกฺโข วิปริณามธมฺโม, อยํ โลเก อาทีนโวฯ
That the world is impermanent, suffering, and perishable: this is its drawback.
โย โลเก ฉนฺทราควินโย ฉนฺทราคปฺปหานํ, อิทํ โลเก นิสฺสรณนฺ'ติฯ
Removing and giving up desire and greed for the world: this is its escape.’
ยาวกีวญฺจาหํ, ภิกฺขเว, เอวํ โลกสฺส อสฺสาทญฺจ อสฺสาทโต อาทีนวญฺจ อาทีนวโต นิสฺสรณญฺจ นิสฺสรณโต ยถาภูตํ นาพฺภญฺญาสึ, เนว ตาวาหํ, ภิกฺขเว, สเทวเก โลเก สมารเก สพฺรหฺมเก สสฺสมณพฺราหฺมณิยา ปชาย สเทวมนุสฺสาย ‘อนุตฺตรํ สมฺมาสมฺโพธึ อภิสมฺพุทฺโธ'ติ ปจฺจญฺญาสึฯ
As long as I didn’t truly understand the world’s gratification, drawback, and escape in this way for what they are, I didn’t announce my supreme perfect awakening in this world with its gods, Māras, and Brahmās, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans.
ยโต จ ขฺวาหํ, ภิกฺขเว, เอวํ โลกสฺส อสฺสาทญฺจ อสฺสาทโต อาทีนวญฺจ อาทีนวโต นิสฺสรณญฺจ นิสฺสรณโต ยถาภูตํ อพฺภญฺญาสึ, อถาหํ, ภิกฺขเว, สเทวเก โลเก สมารเก สพฺรหฺมเก สสฺสมณพฺราหฺมณิยา ปชาย สเทวมนุสฺสาย ‘อนุตฺตรํ สมฺมาสมฺโพธึ อภิสมฺพุทฺโธ'ติ ปจฺจญฺญาสึฯ
But when I did truly understand the world’s gratification, drawback, and escape in this way for what they are, I announced my supreme perfect awakening in this world with its gods, Māras, and Brahmās, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans.
ญาณญฺจ ปน เม ทสฺสนํ อุทปาทิ: ‘อกุปฺปา เม วิมุตฺติ, อยมนฺติมา ชาติ, นตฺถิ ทานิ ปุนพฺภโว'”ติฯ
Knowledge and vision arose in me: ‘My freedom is unshakable; this is my last rebirth; now there’ll be no more future lives.’”
