အထ ခေါ အာယသ္မာ ပုဏ္ဏော ယေန ဘဂဝါ တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ …ပေ… ဧကမန္တံ နိသိန္နော ခေါ အာယသ္မာ ပုဏ္ဏော ဘဂဝန္တံ ဧတဒဝေါစ:
And then Venerable Puṇṇa went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
“သာဓု မေ, ဘန္တေ, ဘဂဝါ သင်္ခိတ္တေန ဓမ္မံ ဒေသေတု, ယမဟံ ဘဂဝတော ဓမ္မံ သုတွာ ဧကော ဝူပကဋ္ဌော အပ္ပမတ္တော အာတာပီ ပဟိတတ္တော ဝိဟရေယျန်”တိ၊
“Sir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief. When I’ve heard it, I’ll live alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute.”
“သန္တိ ခေါ, ပုဏ္ဏ, စက္ခုဝိညေယျာ ရူပါ ဣဋ္ဌာ ကန္တာ မနာပါ ပိယရူပါ ကာမူပသံဟိတာ ရဇနီယာ၊ တဉ္စေ ဘိက္ခု အဘိနန္ဒတိ အဘိဝဒတိ အဇ္ဈောသာယ တိဋ္ဌတိ၊ တဿ တံ အဘိနန္ဒတော အဘိဝဒတော အဇ္ဈောသာယ တိဋ္ဌတော ဥပ္ပဇ္ဇတိ နန္ဒီ၊ ‘နန္ဒိသမုဒယာ ဒုက္ခသမုဒယော, ပုဏ္ဏာ'တိ ဝဒါမိ …ပေ…
“Puṇṇa, there are sights known by the eye that are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing. If a bhikkhu approves, welcomes, and keeps clinging to them, this gives rise to relishing. Relishing is the origin of suffering, I say.

There are sounds … smells … tastes … touches … There are thoughts known by the mind that are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing. If a bhikkhu approves, welcomes, and keeps clinging to them, this gives rise to relishing. Relishing is the origin of suffering, I say.

ဣမိနာ တွံ, ပုဏ္ဏ, မယာ သင်္ခိတ္တေန ဩဝါဒေန ဩဝဒိတော ကတမသ္မိံ ဇနပဒေ ဝိဟရိဿသီ”တိ?
Puṇṇa, now that I’ve given you this brief advice, what country will you live in?”
“အတ္ထိ, ဘန္တေ, သုနာပရန္တော နာမ ဇနပဒေါ, တတ္ထာဟံ ဝိဟရိဿာမီ”တိ၊
“Sir, there’s a country called Sunāparanta; I will live there.”
“စဏ္ဍာ ခေါ, ပုဏ္ဏ, သုနာပရန္တကာ မနုဿာ; ဖရုသာ ခေါ, ပုဏ္ဏ, သုနာပရန္တကာ မနုဿာ၊ သစေ တံ, ပုဏ္ဏ, သုနာပရန္တကာ မနုဿာ အက္ကောသိဿန္တိ ပရိဘာသိဿန္တိ, တတြ တေ, ပုဏ္ဏ, ကိန္တိ ဘဝိဿတီ”တိ?
“The people of Sunāparanta are wild and rough, Puṇṇa. If they abuse and insult you, what will you think of them?”
“သစေ မံ, ဘန္တေ, သုနာပရန္တကာ မနုဿာ အက္ကောသိဿန္တိ ပရိဘာသိဿန္တိ, တတြ မေ ဧဝံ ဘဝိဿတိ: ‘ဘဒ္ဒကာ ဝတိမေ သုနာပရန္တကာ မနုဿာ, သုဘဒ္ဒကာ ဝတိမေ သုနာပရန္တကာ မနုဿာ, ယံ မေ နယိမေ ပါဏိနာ ပဟာရံ ဒေန္တီ'တိ၊ ဧဝမေတ္ထ, ဘဂဝါ, ဘဝိဿတိ; ဧဝမေတ္ထ, သုဂတ, ဘဝိဿတီ”တိ၊
“If they abuse and insult me, I will think: ‘These people of Sunāparanta are gracious, truly gracious, since they don’t hit me with their fists.’ That’s what I’ll think, Blessed One. That’s what I’ll think, Holy One.”
“သစေ ပန တေ, ပုဏ္ဏ, သုနာပရန္တကာ မနုဿာ ပါဏိနာ ပဟာရံ ဒဿန္တိ, တတြ ပန တေ, ပုဏ္ဏ, ကိန္တိ ဘဝိဿတီ”တိ?
“But if they do hit you with their fists, what will you think of them then?”
“သစေ မေ, ဘန္တေ, သုနာပရန္တကာ မနုဿာ ပါဏိနာ ပဟာရံ ဒဿန္တိ, တတြ မေ ဧဝံ ဘဝိဿတိ: ‘ဘဒ္ဒကာ ဝတိမေ သုနာပရန္တကာ မနုဿာ, သုဘဒ္ဒကာ ဝတိမေ သုနာပရန္တကာ မနုဿာ, ယံ မေ နယိမေ လေဍ္ဍုနာ ပဟာရံ ဒေန္တီ'တိ၊ ဧဝမေတ္ထ, ဘဂဝါ, ဘဝိဿတိ; ဧဝမေတ္ထ, သုဂတ, ဘဝိဿတီ”တိ၊
“If they hit me with their fists, I’ll think: ‘These people of Sunāparanta are gracious, truly gracious, since they don’t throw stones at me.’ That’s what I’ll think, Blessed One. That’s what I’ll think, Holy One.”
“သစေ ပန တေ, ပုဏ္ဏ, သုနာပရန္တကာ မနုဿာ လေဍ္ဍုနာ ပဟာရံ ဒဿန္တိ, တတြ ပန တေ, ပုဏ္ဏ, ကိန္တိ ဘဝိဿတီ”တိ?
“But if they do throw stones at you, what will you think of them then?”
“သစေ မေ, ဘန္တေ, သုနာပရန္တကာ မနုဿာ လေဍ္ဍုနာ ပဟာရံ ဒဿန္တိ, တတြ မေ ဧဝံ ဘဝိဿတိ: ‘ဘဒ္ဒကာ ဝတိမေ သုနာပရန္တကာ မနုဿာ, သုဘဒ္ဒကာ ဝတိမေ သုနာပရန္တကာ မနုဿာ, ယံ မေ နယိမေ ဒဏ္ဍေန ပဟာရံ ဒေန္တီ'တိ၊ ဧဝမေတ္ထ, ဘဂဝါ, ဘဝိဿတိ; ဧဝမေတ္ထ, သုဂတ, ဘဝိဿတီ”တိ၊
“If they throw stones at me, I’ll think: ‘These people of Sunāparanta are gracious, truly gracious, since they don’t beat me with a club.’ That’s what I’ll think, Blessed One. That’s what I’ll think, Holy One.”
“သစေ ပန ပုဏ္ဏ, သုနာပရန္တကာ မနုဿာ ဒဏ္ဍေန ပဟာရံ ဒဿန္တိ, တတြ ပန တေ, ပုဏ္ဏ, ကိန္တိ ဘဝိဿတီ”တိ?
“But if they do beat you with a club, what will you think of them then?”
“သစေ မေ, ဘန္တေ, သုနာပရန္တကာ မနုဿာ ဒဏ္ဍေန ပဟာရံ ဒဿန္တိ, တတြ မေ ဧဝံ ဘဝိဿတိ: ‘ဘဒ္ဒကာ ဝတိမေ သုနာပရန္တကာ မနုဿာ, သုဘဒ္ဒကာ ဝတိမေ သုနာပရန္တကာ မနုဿာ, ယံ မေ နယိမေ သတ္ထေန ပဟာရံ ဒေန္တီ'တိ၊ ဧဝမေတ္ထ, ဘဂဝါ, ဘဝိဿတိ; ဧဝမေတ္ထ, သုဂတ, ဘဝိဿတီ”တိ၊
“If they beat me with a club, I’ll think: ‘These people of Sunāparanta are gracious, truly gracious, since they don’t stab me with a knife.’ That’s what I’ll think, Blessed One. That’s what I’ll think, Holy One.”

“သစေ မေ, ဘန္တေ, သုနာပရန္တကာ မနုဿာ သတ္ထေန ပဟာရံ ဒဿန္တိ, တတြ မေ ဧဝံ ဘဝိဿတိ: ‘ဘဒ္ဒကာ ဝတိမေ သုနာပရန္တကာ မနုဿာ, သုဘဒ္ဒကာ ဝတိမေ သုနာပရန္တကာ မနုဿာ, ယံ မံ နယိမေ တိဏှေန သတ္ထေန ဇီဝိတာ ဝေါရောပေန္တီ'တိ၊ ဧဝမေတ္ထ, ဘဂဝါ, ဘဝိဿတိ; ဧဝမေတ္ထ, သုဂတ, ဘဝိဿတီ”တိ၊
“If they stab me with a knife, I’ll think: ‘These people of Sunāparanta are gracious, truly gracious, since they don’t take my life with a sharp knife.’ That’s what I’ll think, Blessed One. That’s what I’ll think, Holy One.”
“သစေ ပန တံ, ပုဏ္ဏ, သုနာပရန္တကာ မနုဿာ တိဏှေန သတ္ထေန ဇီဝိတာ ဝေါရောပေဿန္တိ, တတြ ပန တေ, ပုဏ္ဏ, ကိန္တိ ဘဝိဿတီ”တိ?
“But if they do take your life with a sharp knife, what will you think of them then?”
“သစေ မံ, ဘန္တေ, သုနာပရန္တကာ မနုဿာ တိဏှေန သတ္ထေန ဇီဝိတာ ဝေါရောပေဿန္တိ, တတြ မေ ဧဝံ ဘဝိဿတိ: ‘သန္တိ ခေါ တဿ ဘဂဝတော သာဝကာ ကာယေန စ ဇီဝိတေန စ အဋ္ဋီယမာနာ ဟရာယမာနာ ဇိဂုစ္ဆမာနာ သတ္ထဟာရကံ ပရိယေသန္တိ, တံ မေ ဣဒံ အပရိယိဋ္ဌညေဝ သတ္ထဟာရကံ လဒ္ဓန်'တိ၊ ဧဝမေတ္ထ, ဘဂဝါ, ဘဝိဿတိ; ဧဝမေတ္ထ, သုဂတ, ဘဝိဿတီ”တိ၊
“If they take my life with a sharp knife, I’ll think: ‘There are disciples of the Buddha who looked for someone to assist with slitting their wrists because they were horrified, repelled, and disgusted with the body and with life. And I have found this without looking!’ That’s what I’ll think, Blessed One. That’s what I’ll think, Holy One.”
“သာဓု သာဓု, ပုဏ္ဏ၊ သက္ခိဿသိ ခေါ တွံ, ပုဏ္ဏ, ဣမိနာ ဒမူပသမေန သမန္နာဂတော သုနာပရန္တသ္မိံ ဇနပဒေ ဝတ္ထုံ၊ ယဿဒါနိ တွံ, ပုဏ္ဏ, ကာလံ မညသီ”တိ၊
“Good, good Puṇṇa! Having such self-control and peacefulness, you will be quite capable of living in Sunāparanta. Now, Puṇṇa, go at your convenience.”
အထ ခေါ အာယသ္မာ ပုဏ္ဏော ဘဂဝတော ဝစနံ အဘိနန္ဒိတွာ အနုမောဒိတွာ ဥဋ္ဌာယာသနာ ဘဂဝန္တံ အဘိဝါဒေတွာ ပဒက္ခိဏံ ကတွာ သေနာသနံ သံသာမေတွာ ပတ္တစီဝရမာဒါယ ယေန သုနာပရန္တော ဇနပဒေါ တေန စာရိကံ ပက္ကာမိ၊
And then Puṇṇa welcomed and agreed with the Buddha’s words. He got up from his seat, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right. Then he set his lodgings in order and, taking his bowl and robe, set out for Sunāparanta.
အနုပုဗ္ဗေန စာရိကံ စရမာနော ယေန သုနာပရန္တော ဇနပဒေါ တဒဝသရိ၊ တတြ သုဒံ အာယသ္မာ ပုဏ္ဏော သုနာပရန္တသ္မိံ ဇနပဒေ ဝိဟရတိ၊ အထ ခေါ အာယသ္မာ ပုဏ္ဏော တေနေဝန္တရဝဿေန ပဉ္စမတ္တာနိ ဥပါသကသတာနိ ပဋိဝေဒေသိ၊ တေနေဝန္တရဝဿေန ပဉ္စမတ္တာနိ ဥပါသိကာသတာနိ ပဋိဝေဒေသိ၊ တေနေဝန္တရဝဿေန တိဿော ဝိဇ္ဇာ သစ္ဆာကာသိ၊ တေနေဝန္တရဝဿေန ပရိနိဗ္ဗာယိ၊
Traveling stage by stage, he arrived at Sunāparanta, and stayed there. Within that rainy season he confirmed around five hundred male and five hundred female lay followers. And within that same rainy season he realized the three knowledges. And within that same rainy season he became completely extinguished.
အထ ခေါ သမ္ဗဟုလာ ဘိက္ခူ ယေန ဘဂဝါ တေနုပသင်္ကမိံသု …ပေ… ဧကမန္တံ နိသိန္နာ ခေါ တေ ဘိက္ခူ ဘဂဝန္တံ ဧတဒဝေါစုံ: “ယော သော, ဘန္တေ, ပုဏ္ဏော နာမ ကုလပုတ္တော ဘဂဝတာ သင်္ခိတ္တေန ဩဝါဒေန ဩဝဒိတော, သော ကာလင်္ကတော၊ တဿ ကာ ဂတိ ကော အဘိသမ္ပရာယော”တိ?
Then several bhikkhus went up to the Buddha … and asked him, “Sir, the gentleman named Puṇṇa, who was advised in brief by the Buddha, has passed away. Where has he been reborn in his next life?”
“ပဏ္ဍိတော, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ပုဏ္ဏော ကုလပုတ္တော, ပစ္စပါဒိ ဓမ္မဿာနုဓမ္မံ, န စ မံ ဓမ္မာဓိကရဏံ ဝိဟေသေသိ၊ ပရိနိဗ္ဗုတော, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ပုဏ္ဏော ကုလပုတ္တော”တိ၊
“Bhikkhus, Puṇṇa was astute. He practiced in line with the teachings, and did not trouble me about the teachings. Puṇṇa has become completely extinguished.”
