ปฐมวินยธรสุตฺต
An Expert in the Monastic Law (1st)
“สตฺตหิ, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ภิกฺขุ วินยธโร โหติฯ กตเมหิ สตฺตหิ? อาปตฺตึ ชานาติ, อนาปตฺตึ ชานาติ, ลหุกํ อาปตฺตึ ชานาติ, ครุกํ อาปตฺตึ ชานาติ, สีลวา โหติ ปาติโมกฺขสํวรสํวุโต วิหรติ อาจารโคจรสมฺปนฺโน อณุมตฺเตสุ วชฺเชสุ ภยทสฺสาวี สมาทาย สิกฺขติ สิกฺขาปเทสุ, จตุนฺนํ ฌานานํ อาภิเจตสิกานํ ทิฏฺฐธมฺมสุขวิหารานํ นิกามลาภี โหติ อกิจฺฉลาภี อกสิรลาภี, อาสวานํ ขยา อนาสวํ เจโตวิมุตฺตึ ปญฺญาวิมุตฺตึ ทิฏฺเฐว ธมฺเม สยํ อภิญฺญา สจฺฉิกตฺวา อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรติฯ อิเมหิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, สตฺตหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ภิกฺขุ วินยธโร โหตี”ติฯ
“Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu with seven qualities is an expert in the monastic law. What seven? They know what is an offense. They know what is not an offense. They know what is a light offense. They know what is a serious offense. They’re ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and seeking alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules they’ve undertaken. They get the four jhānas—pleasant meditations in the present life that belong to the higher mind—when they want, without trouble or difficulty. They realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements. A bhikkhu with these seven qualities is an expert in the monastic law.”
