Honor
อถ โข อายสฺมโต สาริปุตฺตสฺส รโหคตสฺส ปฏิสลฺลีนสฺส เอวํ เจตโส ปริวิตกฺโก อุทปาทิ: “กึ นุ โข, ภิกฺขุ, สกฺกตฺวา ครุํ กตฺวา อุปนิสฺสาย วิหรนฺโต อกุสลํ ปชเหยฺย, กุสลํ ภาเวยฺยา”ติ?
Then as Venerable Sāriputta was in private retreat this thought came to his mind, “What should a bhikkhu honor and respect and rely on, to give up the unskillful and develop the skillful?”
อถ โข อายสฺมโต สาริปุตฺตสฺส เอตทโหสิ: “สตฺถารํ โข, ภิกฺขุ, สกฺกตฺวา ครุํ กตฺวา อุปนิสฺสาย วิหรนฺโต อกุสลํ ปชเหยฺย, กุสลํ ภาเวยฺยฯ ธมฺมํ โข, ภิกฺขุ …เป… สงฺฆํ โข, ภิกฺขุ …เป… สิกฺขํ โข, ภิกฺขุ …เป… สมาธึ โข, ภิกฺขุ …เป… อปฺปมาทํ โข, ภิกฺขุ …เป… ปฏิสนฺถารํ โข, ภิกฺขุ สกฺกตฺวา ครุํ กตฺวา อุปนิสฺสาย วิหรนฺโต อกุสลํ ปชเหยฺย, กุสลํ ภาเวยฺยา”ติฯ
Then he thought, “A bhikkhu should honor and respect and rely on the Teacher … the teaching … the Saṅgha … the training … samādhi … diligence … A bhikkhu should honor and respect and rely on hospitality, to give up the unskillful and develop the skillful.”
อถ โข อายสฺมโต สาริปุตฺตสฺส เอตทโหสิ: “อิเม โข เม ธมฺมา ปริสุทฺธา ปริโยทาตา, ยนฺนูนาหํ อิเม ธมฺเม คนฺตฺวา ภควโต อาโรเจยฺยํฯ เอวํ เม อิเม ธมฺมา ปริสุทฺธา เจว ภวิสฺสนฺติ ปริสุทฺธสงฺขาตตรา จฯ เสยฺยถาปิ นาม ปุริโส สุวณฺณนิกฺขํ อธิคจฺเฉยฺย ปริสุทฺธํ ปริโยทาตํฯ ตสฺส เอวมสฺส: ‘อยํ โข เม สุวณฺณนิกฺโข ปริสุทฺโธ ปริโยทาโต, ยนฺนูนาหํ อิมํ สุวณฺณนิกฺขํ คนฺตฺวา กมฺมารานํ ทเสฺสยฺยํฯ เอวํ เม อยํ สุวณฺณนิกฺโข สกมฺมารคโต ปริสุทฺโธ เจว ภวิสฺสติ ปริสุทฺธสงฺขาตตโร จฯ เอวเมวํ เม อิเม ธมฺมา ปริสุทฺธา ปริโยทาตา, ยนฺนูนาหํ อิเม ธมฺเม คนฺตฺวา ภควโต อาโรเจยฺยํฯ เอวํ เม อิเม ธมฺมา ปริสุทฺธา เจว ภวิสฺสนฺติ ปริสุทฺธสงฺขาตตรา จา'”ติฯ
Then he thought, “These qualities are pure and bright in me. Why don’t I go and tell them to the Buddha? Then these qualities will not only be purified in me, but will be better known as purified. Suppose a man were to acquire a gold coin, pure and bright. They’d think, ‘My gold coin is pure and bright. Why don’t I take it to show the smiths? Then it will not only be purified, but will be better known as purified.’ In the same way, these qualities are pure and bright in me. Why don’t I go and tell them to the Buddha? Then these qualities will not only be purified in me, but will be better known as purified.”
อถ โข อายสฺมา สาริปุตฺโต สายนฺหสมยํ ปฏิสลฺลานา วุฏฺฐิโต เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทิฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺโน โข อายสฺมา สาริปุตฺโต ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ:
Then in the late afternoon, Sāriputta came out of retreat and went to the Buddha. He bowed, sat down to one side, and told the Buddha of his thoughts while on retreat.
“อิธ มยฺหํ, ภนฺเต, รโหคตสฺส ปฏิสลฺลีนสฺส เอวํ เจตโส ปริวิตกฺโก อุทปาทิ: ‘กึ นุ โข ภิกฺขุ สกฺกตฺวา ครุํ กตฺวา อุปนิสฺสาย วิหรนฺโต อกุสลํ ปชเหยฺย, กุสลํ ภาเวยฺยา'ติ? อถ โข ตสฺส มยฺหํ, ภนฺเต, เอตทโหสิ: ‘สตฺถารํ โข ภิกฺขุ สกฺกตฺวา ครุํ กตฺวา อุปนิสฺสาย วิหรนฺโต อกุสลํ ปชเหยฺย, กุสลํ ภาเวยฺยฯ ธมฺมํ โข ภิกฺขุ …เป… ปฏิสนฺถารํ โข ภิกฺขุ สกฺกตฺวา …เป… กุสลํ ภาเวยฺยา'ติฯ อถ โข ตสฺส มยฺหํ, ภนฺเต, เอตทโหสิ: ‘อิเม โข เม ธมฺมา ปริสุทฺธา ปริโยทาตา, ยนฺนูนาหํ อิเม ธมฺเม คนฺตฺวา ภควโต อาโรเจยฺยํฯ เอวํ เม อิเม ธมฺมา ปริสุทฺธา เจว ภวิสฺสนฺติ ปริสุทฺธสงฺขาตตรา จฯ เสยฺยถาปิ นาม ปุริโส สุวณฺณนิกฺขํ อธิคจฺเฉยฺย ปริสุทฺธํ ปริโยทาตํฯ ตสฺส เอวมสฺส—อยํ โข เม สุวณฺณนิกฺโข ปริสุทฺโธ ปริโยทาโต, ยนฺนูนาหํ อิมํ สุวณฺณนิกฺขํ คนฺตฺวา กมฺมารานํ ทเสฺสยฺยํฯ เอวํ เม อยํ สุวณฺณนิกฺโข สกมฺมารคโต ปริสุทฺโธ เจว ภวิสฺสติ ปริสุทฺธสงฺขาตตโร จฯ เอวเมวํ เม อิเม ธมฺมา ปริสุทฺธา ปริโยทาตา, ยนฺนูนาหํ อิเม ธมฺเม คนฺตฺวา ภควโต อาโรเจยฺยํฯ เอวํ เม อิเม ธมฺมา ปริสุทฺธา เจว ภวิสฺสนฺติ ปริสุทฺธสงฺขาตตรา จา'”ติฯ
“สาธุ สาธุ, สาริปุตฺตฯ สตฺถารํ โข, สาริปุตฺต, ภิกฺขุ สกฺกตฺวา ครุํ กตฺวา อุปนิสฺสาย วิหรนฺโต อกุสลํ ปชเหยฺย, กุสลํ ภาเวยฺยฯ ธมฺมํ โข, สาริปุตฺต, ภิกฺขุ สกฺกตฺวา ครุํ กตฺวา อุปนิสฺสาย วิหรนฺโต อกุสลํ ปชเหยฺย, กุสลํ ภาเวยฺยฯ สงฺฆํ โข …เป… สิกฺขํ โข … สมาธึ โข … อปฺปมาทํ โข … ปฏิสนฺถารํ โข, สาริปุตฺต, ภิกฺขุ สกฺกตฺวา ครุํ กตฺวา อุปนิสฺสาย วิหรนฺโต อกุสลํ ปชเหยฺย, กุสลํ ภาเวยฺยา”ติฯ
“Good, good, Sāriputta! A bhikkhu should honor and respect and rely on the Teacher, to give up the unskillful and develop the skillful. A bhikkhu should honor and respect and rely on the teaching … the Saṅgha … the training … samādhi … diligence … A bhikkhu should honor and respect and rely on hospitality, to give up the unskillful and develop the skillful.”
เอวํ วุตฺเต, อายสฺมา สาริปุตฺโต ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ:
When he said this, Venerable Sāriputta said to the Buddha:
“อิมสฺส โข อหํ, ภนฺเต, ภควตา สงฺขิตฺเตน ภาสิตสฺส เอวํ วิตฺถาเรน อตฺถํ อาชานามิฯ โส วต, ภนฺเต, ภิกฺขุ สตฺถริ อคารโว ธมฺเม สคารโว ภวิสฺสตีติ เนตํ ฐานํ วิชฺชติฯ โย โส, ภนฺเต, ภิกฺขุ สตฺถริ อคารโว ธมฺเมปิ โส อคารโวฯ
“Sir, this is how I understand the detailed meaning of the Buddha’s brief statement. It’s quite impossible for a bhikkhu who doesn’t respect the Teacher to respect the teaching. A bhikkhu who disrespects the Teacher disrespects the teaching.
โส วต, ภนฺเต, ภิกฺขุ สตฺถริ อคารโว ธมฺเม อคารโว สงฺเฆ สคารโว ภวิสฺสตีติ เนตํ ฐานํ วิชฺชติฯ โย โส, ภนฺเต, ภิกฺขุ สตฺถริ อคารโว ธมฺเม อคารโว สงฺเฆปิ โส อคารโวฯ
It’s quite impossible for a bhikkhu who doesn’t respect the Teacher and the teaching to respect the Saṅgha. A bhikkhu who disrespects the Teacher and the teaching disrespects the Saṅgha.
โส วต, ภนฺเต, ภิกฺขุ สตฺถริ อคารโว ธมฺเม อคารโว สงฺเฆ อคารโว สิกฺขาย สคารโว ภวิสฺสตีติ เนตํ ฐานํ วิชฺชติฯ โย โส, ภนฺเต, ภิกฺขุ สตฺถริ อคารโว ธมฺเม อคารโว สงฺเฆ อคารโว สิกฺขายปิ โส อคารโวฯ
It’s quite impossible for a bhikkhu who doesn’t respect the Teacher, the teaching, and the Saṅgha to respect the training. A bhikkhu who disrespects the Teacher, the teaching, and the Saṅgha disrespects the training.
โส วต, ภนฺเต, ภิกฺขุ สตฺถริ อคารโว ธมฺเม อคารโว สงฺเฆ อคารโว สิกฺขาย อคารโว สมาธิสฺมึ สคารโว ภวิสฺสตีติ เนตํ ฐานํ วิชฺชติฯ โย โส, ภนฺเต, ภิกฺขุ สตฺถริ อคารโว ธมฺเม อคารโว สงฺเฆ อคารโว สิกฺขาย อคารโว สมาธิสฺมิมฺปิ โส อคารโวฯ
It’s quite impossible for a bhikkhu who doesn’t respect the Teacher, the teaching, the Saṅgha, and the training to respect samādhi. A bhikkhu who disrespects the Teacher, the teaching, the Saṅgha, and the training disrespects samādhi.
โส วต, ภนฺเต, ภิกฺขุ สตฺถริ อคารโว ธมฺเม อคารโว สงฺเฆ อคารโว สิกฺขาย อคารโว สมาธิสฺมึ อคารโว อปฺปมาเท สคารโว ภวิสฺสตีติ เนตํ ฐานํ วิชฺชติฯ โย โส, ภนฺเต, ภิกฺขุ สตฺถริ อคารโว ธมฺเม อคารโว สงฺเฆ อคารโว สิกฺขาย อคารโว สมาธิสฺมึ อคารโว อปฺปมาเทปิ โส อคารโวฯ
It’s quite impossible for a bhikkhu who doesn’t respect the Teacher, the teaching, the Saṅgha, the training, and samādhi to respect diligence. A bhikkhu who disrespects the Teacher, the teaching, the Saṅgha, the training, and samādhi disrespects diligence.
โส วต, ภนฺเต, ภิกฺขุ สตฺถริ อคารโว ธมฺเม อคารโว สงฺเฆ อคารโว สิกฺขาย อคารโว สมาธิสฺมึ อคารโว อปฺปมาเท อคารโว ปฏิสนฺถาเร สคารโว ภวิสฺสตีติ เนตํ ฐานํ วิชฺชติฯ โย โส, ภนฺเต, ภิกฺขุ สตฺถริ อคารโว …เป… อปฺปมาเท อคารโว ปฏิสนฺถาเรปิ โส อคารโวฯ

“สาธุ สาธุ, สาริปุตฺตฯ สาธุ โข ตฺวํ, สาริปุตฺต, อิมสฺส มยา สงฺขิตฺเตน ภาสิตสฺส เอวํ วิตฺถาเรน อตฺถํ อาชานาสิฯ
“Good, good, Sāriputta! It’s good that you understand the detailed meaning of what I’ve said in brief like this.
