The Ascetic Life (1st)

සාවත්ථිනිදානං.

At Sāvatthī.

“සාමඤ්ඤඤ්ච වෝ, භික්ඛවේ, දේසේස්සාමි, සාමඤ්ඤඵලානි ච. තං සුණාථ.

“Bhikkhus, I will teach you the ascetic life and the fruits of the ascetic life. Listen …

කතමඤ්ච, භික්ඛවේ, සාමඤ්ඤං? අයමේව අරියෝ අට්ඨඞ්ගිකෝ මග්ගෝ, සේය්‍යථිදං—සම්මාදිට්ඨි …පේ… සම්මාසමාධි. ඉදං වුච්චති, භික්ඛවේ, සාමඤ්ඤං.

And what is the ascetic life? It is simply this noble eightfold path, that is: right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right samādhi. This is called the ascetic life.

කතමානි ච, භික්ඛවේ, සාමඤ්ඤඵලානි? සෝතාපත්තිඵලං, සකදාගාමිඵලං, අනාගාමිඵලං, අරහත්තඵලං—ඉමානි වුච්චන්ති, භික්ඛවේ, සාමඤ්ඤඵලානී”ති.

And what are the fruits of the ascetic life? The fruits of stream-entry, once-return, non-return, and perfection. These are called the fruits of the ascetic life.”
