Lower Fetters
“ปญฺจิมานิ, ภิกฺขเว, โอรมฺภาคิยานิ สํโยชนานิฯ กตมานิ ปญฺจ? สกฺกายทิฏฺฐิ, วิจิกิจฺฉา, สีลพฺพตปรามาโส, กามจฺฉนฺโท, พฺยาปาโท—อิมานิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺโจรมฺภาคิยานิ สํโยชนานิฯ
“Bhikkhus, there are five lower fetters. What five? Identity view, doubt, misapprehension of precepts and observances, sensual desire, and ill will. These are the five lower fetters.
อิเมสํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจนฺนํ โอรมฺภาคิยานํ สํโยชนานํ อภิญฺญาย ปริญฺญาย ปริกฺขยาย ปหานาย …เป… อยํ อริโย อฏฺฐงฺคิโก มคฺโค ภาเวตพฺโพ”ติฯ
The noble eightfold path should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these five lowers fetters.”
