5. Overflowing Merit, With Verses
นนฺทิยสุตฺต
With Nandiya
กปิลวตฺถุนิทานํฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺนํ โข นนฺทิยํ สกฺกํ ภควา เอตทโวจ:
At Kapilavatthu. Seated to one side, the Buddha said to Nandiya the Sakyan:
“จตูหิ โข, นนฺทิย, ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต อริยสาวโก โสตาปนฺโน โหติ อวินิปาตธมฺโม นิยโต สมฺโพธิปรายโณฯ
“Nandiya, a noble disciple who has four things is a stream-enterer, not liable to be reborn in the underworld, bound for awakening.
กตเมหิ จตูหิ? อิธ, นนฺทิย, อริยสาวโก พุทฺเธ อเวจฺจปฺปสาเทน สมนฺนาคโต โหติ—อิติปิ โส ภควา …เป… สตฺถา เทวมนุสฺสานํ พุทฺโธ ภควาติฯ ธมฺเม …เป… สงฺเฆ …เป… อริยกนฺเตหิ สีเลหิ สมนฺนาคโต โหติ อขณฺเฑหิ …เป… สมาธิสํวตฺตนิเกหิฯ อิเมหิ โข, นนฺทิย, จตูหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต อริยสาวโก โสตาปนฺโน โหติ อวินิปาตธมฺโม นิยโต สมฺโพธิปรายโณ”ติฯ
What four? It’s when a noble disciple has experiential confidence in the Buddha … the teaching … the Saṅgha … And they have the ethical conduct loved by the noble ones … leading to samādhi. A noble disciple who has these four things is a stream-enterer, not liable to be reborn in the underworld, bound for awakening.”
