Manonivāraṇasutta

Shielding the Mind

“यतो यतो मनो निवारये, न दुक्खमेति नं ततो ततो; स सब्बतो मनो निवारये, स सब्बतो दुक्खा पमुच्चती”ति।

“Yato yato mano nivāraye, Na dukkhameti naṁ tato tato; Sa sabbato mano nivāraye, Sa sabbato dukkhā pamuccatī”ti.

“Whatever you’ve shielded the mind from can’t cause you suffering. So you should shield the mind from everything, then you’re freed from all suffering.”

“न सब्बतो मनो निवारये, न मनो संयतत्तमागतं; यतो यतो च पापकं, ततो ततो मनो निवारये”ति।

“Na sabbato mano nivāraye, Na mano saṁyatattamāgataṁ; Yato yato ca pāpakaṁ, Tato tato mano nivāraye”ti.

“You needn’t shield the mind from everything. When the mind is under control, you need only shield the mind from where the bad things come.”
