With Koṭṭhita
අථ ඛෝ ආයස්මා මහාකෝට්ඨිකෝ යේනායස්මා සාරිපුත්තෝ තේනුපසඞ්කමි; උපසඞ්කමිත්වා ආයස්මතා සාරිපුත්තේන සද්ධිං සම්මෝදි. සම්මෝදනීයං කථං සාරණීයං වීතිසාරේත්වා ඒකමන්තං නිසීදි. ඒකමන්තං නිසින්නෝ ඛෝ ආයස්මා මහාකෝට්ඨිකෝ ආයස්මන්තං සාරිපුත්තං ඒතදවෝච:
Then Venerable Mahākoṭṭhita went up to Venerable Sāriputta, and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to Sāriputta:
“කිං නු ඛෝ, ආවුසෝ සාරිපුත්ත, ‘යං කම්මං දිට්ඨධම්මවේදනීයං, තං මේ කම්මං සම්පරායවේදනීයං හෝතූ(අ)ති, ඒතස්ස අත්ථාය භගවති බ්රහ්මචරියං වුස්සතී”ති?
“Friend Sāriputta, is the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ‘May deeds to be experienced in this life be experienced by me in lives to come’?”
“නෝ හිදං, ආවුසෝ”.
“Certainly not, friend.”
“කිං පනාවුසෝ සාරිපුත්ත, ‘යං කම්මං සම්පරායවේදනීයං තං මේ කම්මං දිට්ඨධම්මවේදනීයං හෝතූ(අ)ති, ඒතස්ස අත්ථාය භගවති බ්රහ්මචරියං වුස්සතී”ති?
“Then is the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ‘May deeds to be experienced in lives to come be experienced by me in this life’?”
“නෝ හිදං, ආවුසෝ”.
“Certainly not.”
“කිං නු ඛෝ, ආවුසෝ සාරිපුත්ත, ‘යං කම්මං සුඛවේදනීයං, තං මේ කම්මං දුක්ඛවේදනීයං හෝතූ(අ)ති, ඒතස්ස අත්ථාය භගවති බ්රහ්මචරියං වුස්සතී”ති?
“Is the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ‘May deeds to be experienced as pleasant be experienced by me as painful’?”
“නෝ හිදං, ආවුසෝ”.
“Certainly not.”
“කිං පනාවුසෝ, සාරිපුත්ත, ‘යං කම්මං දුක්ඛවේදනීයං, තං මේ කම්මං සුඛවේදනීයං හෝතූ(අ)ති, ඒතස්ස අත්ථාය භගවති බ්රහ්මචරියං වුස්සතී”ති?
“Then is the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ‘May deeds to be experienced as painful be experienced by me as pleasant’?”
“නෝ හිදං, ආවුසෝ”.
“Certainly not.”
“කිං නු ඛෝ, ආවුසෝ සාරිපුත්ත, ‘යං කම්මං පරිපක්කවේදනීයං, තං මේ කම්මං අපරිපක්කවේදනීයං හෝතූ(අ)ති, ඒතස්ස අත්ථාය භගවති බ්රහ්මචරියං වුස්සතී”ති?
“Is the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ‘May deeds to be experienced when ripe be experienced by me when unripe’?”
“නෝ හිදං, ආවුසෝ”.
“Certainly not.”
“කිං පනාවුසෝ සාරිපුත්ත, ‘යං කම්මං අපරිපක්කවේදනීයං, තං මේ කම්මං පරිපක්කවේදනීයං හෝතූ(අ)ති, ඒතස්ස අත්ථාය භගවති බ්රහ්මචරියං වුස්සතී”ති?
“Then is the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ‘May deeds to be experienced when unripe be experienced by me when ripe’?”
“නෝ හිදං, ආවුසෝ”.
“Certainly not.”
“කිං නු ඛෝ, ආවුසෝ සාරිපුත්ත, ‘යං කම්මං බහුවේදනීයං, තං මේ කම්මං අප්පවේදනීයං හෝතූ(අ)ති, ඒතස්ස අත්ථාය භගවති බ්රහ්මචරියං වුස්සතී”ති?
“Is the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ‘May deeds to be experienced a lot be experienced by me a little’?”
“නෝ හිදං, ආවුසෝ”.
“Certainly not.”
“කිං පනාවුසෝ සාරිපුත්ත, ‘යං කම්මං අප්පවේදනීයං, තං මේ කම්මං බහුවේදනීයං හෝතූ(අ)ති, ඒතස්ස අත්ථාය භගවති බ්රහ්මචරියං වුස්සතී”ති?
“Then is the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ‘May deeds to be experienced a little be experienced by me a lot’?”
“නෝ හිදං, ආවුසෝ”.
“Certainly not.”
“කිං නු ඛෝ, ආවුසෝ සාරිපුත්ත, ‘යං කම්මං වේදනීයං, තං මේ කම්මං අවේදනීයං හෝතූ(අ)ති, ඒතස්ස අත්ථාය භගවති බ්රහ්මචරියං වුස්සතී”ති?
“Is the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ‘May deeds to be experienced by me be not experienced’?”
“නෝ හිදං, ආවුසෝ”.
“Certainly not.”
“කිං පනාවුසෝ සාරිපුත්ත, ‘යං කම්මං අවේදනීයං, තං මේ කම්මං වේදනීයං හෝතූ(අ)ති, ඒතස්ස අත්ථාය භගවති බ්රහ්මචරියං වුස්සතී”ති?
“Then is the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ‘May deeds not to be experienced be experienced’?”
“නෝ හිදං, ආවුසෝ”.
“Certainly not.”
“‘කිං නු ඛෝ, ආවුසෝ සාරිපුත්ත, යං කම්මං දිට්ඨධම්මවේදනීයං තං මේ කම්මං සම්පරායවේදනීයං හෝතූති, ඒතස්ස අත්ථාය භගවති බ්රහ්මචරියං වුස්සතී(අ)ති, ඉති පුට්ඨෝ සමානෝ ‘නෝ හිදං, ආවුසෝ(අ)ති වදේසි.
“Friend Sāriputta, when you were asked whether the spiritual life was lived under the Buddha so that deeds to be experienced in this life are experienced in lives to come, you said, ‘Certainly not’.
‘කිං පනාවුසෝ සාරිපුත්ත, යං කම්මං සම්පරායවේදනීයං තං මේ කම්මං දිට්ඨධම්මවේදනීයං හෝතූති, ඒතස්ස අත්ථාය භගවති බ්රහ්මචරියං වුස්සතී(අ)ති, ඉති පුට්ඨෝ සමානෝ ‘නෝ හිදං, ආවුසෝ(අ)ති වදේසි.
When you were asked whether the spiritual life was lived under the Buddha so that deeds to be experienced in lives to come are experienced in this life …

When you were asked whether the spiritual life was lived under the Buddha so that deeds not to be experienced are experienced, you said, ‘Certainly not.’ Then what exactly is the purpose of leading the spiritual life under the Buddha?”
“යං ඛ්වස්ස, ආවුසෝ, අඤ්ඤාතං අදිට්ඨං අප්පත්තං අසච්ඡිකතං අනභිසමේතං, තස්ස ඤාණාය දස්සනාය පත්තියා සච්ඡිකිරියාය අභිසමයාය භගවති බ්රහ්මචරියං වුස්සතීති.
“Friend, the spiritual life is lived under the Buddha to know, see, attain, realize, and comprehend that which is unknown, unseen, unattained, unrealized, and uncomprehended.”
කිං පනස්සාවුසෝ, අඤ්ඤාතං අදිට්ඨං අප්පත්තං අසච්ඡිකතං අනභිසමේතං, යස්ස ඤාණාය දස්සනාය පත්තියා සච්ඡිකිරියාය අභිසමයාය භගවති බ්රහ්මචරියං වුස්සතීති?
“But what is the unknown, unseen, unattained, unrealized, and uncomprehended?”
‘ඉදං දුක්ඛන්(අ)ති ඛ්වස්ස, ආවුසෝ, අඤ්ඤාතං අදිට්ඨං අප්පත්තං අසච්ඡිකතං අනභිසමේතං. තස්ස ඤාණාය දස්සනාය පත්තියා සච්ඡිකිරියාය අභිසමයාය භගවති බ්රහ්මචරියං වුස්සති. ‘අයං දුක්ඛසමුදයෝ(අ)ති ඛ්වස්ස, ආවුසෝ …පේ… ‘අයං දුක්ඛනිරෝධෝ(අ)ති ඛ්වස්ස, ආවුසෝ …පේ… ‘අයං දුක්ඛනිරෝධගාමිනී පටිපදා(අ)ති ඛ්වස්ස, ආවුසෝ, අඤ්ඤාතං අදිට්ඨං අප්පත්තං අසච්ඡිකතං අනභිසමේතං. තස්ස ඤාණාය දස්සනාය පත්තියා සච්ඡිකිරියාය අභිසමයාය භගවති බ්රහ්මචරියං වුස්සති. ඉදං ඛ්වස්ස, ආවුසෝ, අඤ්ඤාතං අදිට්ඨං අප්පත්තං අසච්ඡිකතං අනභිසමේතං. තස්ස ඤාණාය දස්සනාය පත්තියා සච්ඡිකිරියාය අභිසමයාය භගවති බ්රහ්මචරියං වුස්සතී”ති.
“‘This is suffering.’ … ‘This is the origin of suffering.’ … ‘This is the cessation of suffering.’ … ‘This is the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering.’ … This is the unknown, unseen, unattained, unrealized, and uncomprehended. The spiritual life is lived under the Buddha to know, see, attain, realize, and comprehend this.”
