The Powers of One Who has Ended Defilements
อถ โข อายสฺมา สาริปุตฺโต เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทิฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺนํ โข อายสฺมนฺตํ สาริปุตฺตํ ภควา เอตทโวจ:
Then Venerable Sāriputta went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:
“กติ นุ โข, สาริปุตฺต, ขีณาสวสฺส ภิกฺขุโน พลานิ, เยหิ พเลหิ สมนฺนาคโต ขีณาสโว ภิกฺขุ อาสวานํ ขยํ ปฏิชานาติ: ‘ขีณา เม อาสวา'”ติ?
“Sāriputta, how many powers does a bhikkhu who has ended the defilements have that qualify them to claim: ‘My defilements have ended.’”
“ทส, ภนฺเต, ขีณาสวสฺส ภิกฺขุโน พลานิ, เยหิ พเลหิ สมนฺนาคโต ขีณาสโว ภิกฺขุ อาสวานํ ขยํ ปฏิชานาติ: ‘ขีณา เม อาสวา'ติฯ กตมานิ ทส? อิธ, ภนฺเต, ขีณาสวสฺส ภิกฺขุโน อนิจฺจโต สพฺเพ สงฺขารา ยถาภูตํ สมฺมปฺปญฺญาย สุทิฏฺฐา โหนฺติฯ ยมฺปิ, ภนฺเต, ขีณาสวสฺส ภิกฺขุโน อนิจฺจโต สพฺเพ สงฺขารา ยถาภูตํ สมฺมปฺปญฺญาย สุทิฏฺฐา โหนฺติ, อิทมฺปิ, ภนฺเต, ขีณาสวสฺส ภิกฺขุโน พลํ โหติ, ยํ พลํ อาคมฺม ขีณาสโว ภิกฺขุ อาสวานํ ขยํ ปฏิชานาติ: ‘ขีณา เม อาสวา'ติฯ
“Sir, a bhikkhu who has ended the defilements has ten powers that qualify them to claim: ‘My defilements have ended.’ What ten? Firstly, a bhikkhu with defilements ended has clearly seen with right wisdom all conditions as truly impermanent. This is a power that a bhikkhu who has ended the defilements relies on to claim: ‘My defilements have ended.’
ปุน จปรํ, ภนฺเต, ขีณาสวสฺส ภิกฺขุโน องฺคารกาสูปมา กามา ยถาภูตํ สมฺมปฺปญฺญาย สุทิฏฺฐา โหนฺติฯ ยมฺปิ, ภนฺเต, ขีณาสวสฺส ภิกฺขุโน องฺคารกาสูปมา กามา ยถาภูตํ สมฺมปฺปญฺญาย สุทิฏฺฐา โหนฺติ, อิทมฺปิ, ภนฺเต, ขีณาสวสฺส ภิกฺขุโน พลํ โหติ, ยํ พลํ อาคมฺม ขีณาสโว ภิกฺขุ อาสวานํ ขยํ ปฏิชานาติ: ‘ขีณา เม อาสวา'ติฯ
Furthermore, a bhikkhu with defilements ended has clearly seen with right wisdom that sensual pleasures are truly like a pit of glowing coals. This is a power that a bhikkhu who has ended the defilements relies on to claim: ‘My defilements have ended.’
ปุน จปรํ, ภนฺเต, ขีณาสวสฺส ภิกฺขุโน วิเวกนินฺนํ จิตฺตํ โหติ วิเวกโปณํ วิเวกปพฺภารํ วิเวกฏฺฐํ เนกฺขมฺมาภิรตํ พฺยนฺตีภูตํ สพฺพโส อาสวฏฺฐานิเยหิ ธมฺเมหิฯ ยมฺปิ, ภนฺเต, ขีณาสวสฺส ภิกฺขุโน วิเวกนินฺนํ จิตฺตํ โหติ วิเวกโปณํ วิเวกปพฺภารํ วิเวกฏฺฐํ เนกฺขมฺมาภิรตํ พฺยนฺตีภูตํ สพฺพโส อาสวฏฺฐานิเยหิ ธมฺเมหิ, อิทมฺปิ, ภนฺเต, ขีณาสวสฺส ภิกฺขุโน พลํ โหติ, ยํ พลํ อาคมฺม ขีณาสโว ภิกฺขุ อาสวานํ ขยํ ปฏิชานาติ: ‘ขีณา เม อาสวา'ติฯ
Furthermore, the mind of a bhikkhu with defilements ended slants, slopes, and inclines to seclusion. They’re withdrawn, loving renunciation, and they’ve totally done with defiling influences. This is a power that a bhikkhu who has ended the defilements relies on to claim: ‘My defilements have ended.’
ปุน จปรํ, ภนฺเต, ขีณาสวสฺส ภิกฺขุโน จตฺตาโร สติปฏฺฐานา ภาวิตา โหนฺติ สุภาวิตาฯ ยมฺปิ, ภนฺเต, ขีณาสวสฺส ภิกฺขุโน จตฺตาโร สติปฏฺฐานา ภาวิตา โหนฺติ สุภาวิตา, อิทมฺปิ, ภนฺเต, ขีณาสวสฺส ภิกฺขุโน พลํ โหติ, ยํ พลํ อาคมฺม ขีณาสโว ภิกฺขุ อาสวานํ ขยํ ปฏิชานาติ: ‘ขีณา เม อาสวา'ติฯ
Furthermore, a bhikkhu with defilements ended has well developed the four kinds of mindfulness meditation. This is a power that a bhikkhu who has ended the defilements relies on to claim: ‘My defilements have ended.’
ปุน จปรํ, ภนฺเต, ขีณาสวสฺส ภิกฺขุโน จตฺตาโร สมฺมปฺปธานา ภาวิตา โหนฺติ สุภาวิตา …เป… จตฺตาโร อิทฺธิปาทา ภาวิตา โหนฺติ สุภาวิตา …เป… ปญฺจินฺทฺริยานิ … ปญฺจ พลานิ ภาวิตานิ โหนฺติ สุภาวิตานิ … สตฺต โพชฺฌงฺคา ภาวิตา โหนฺติ สุภาวิตา … อริโย อฏฺฐงฺคิโก มคฺโค ภาวิโต โหติ สุภาวิโตฯ ยมฺปิ, ภนฺเต, ขีณาสวสฺส ภิกฺขุโน อริโย อฏฺฐงฺคิโก มคฺโค ภาวิโต โหติ สุภาวิโต, อิทมฺปิ, ภนฺเต, ขีณาสวสฺส ภิกฺขุโน พลํ โหติ, ยํ พลํ อาคมฺม ขีณาสโว ภิกฺขุ อาสวานํ ขยํ ปฏิชานาติ: ‘ขีณา เม อาสวา'ติฯ
Furthermore, a bhikkhu with defilements ended has well developed the four right efforts. … the four bases of psychic power … the five faculties … the five powers … the seven awakening factors … the noble eightfold path. This is a power that a bhikkhu who has ended the defilements relies on to claim: ‘My defilements have ended.’
อิมานิ โข, ภนฺเต, ทส ขีณาสวสฺส ภิกฺขุโน พลานิ, เยหิ พเลหิ สมนฺนาคโต ขีณาสโว ภิกฺขุ อาสวานํ ขยํ ปฏิชานาติ: ‘ขีณา เม อาสวา'”ติฯ
A bhikkhu who has ended the defilements has these ten powers that qualify them to claim: ‘My defilements have ended.’”
