เอกํ สมยํ ภควา จมฺปายํ วิหรติ คคฺคราย โปกฺขรณิยา ตีเรฯ อถ โข อายสฺมา วาหโน เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทิฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺโน โข อายสฺมา วาหโน ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ:
At one time the Buddha was staying near Campā on the banks of the Gaggarā Lotus Pond. Then Venerable Bāhuna went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
“กติหิ นุ โข, ภนฺเต, ธมฺเมหิ ตถาคโต นิสฺสโฏ วิสํยุตฺโต วิปฺปมุตฺโต วิมริยาทีกเตน เจตสา วิหรตี”ติ?
“Sir, how many things has the Realized One escaped from, so that he lives unattached, liberated, his mind free of limits?”
“ทสหิ โข, วาหน, ธมฺเมหิ ตถาคโต นิสฺสโฏ วิสํยุตฺโต วิปฺปมุตฺโต วิมริยาทีกเตน เจตสา วิหรติฯ กตเมหิ ทสหิ? รูเปน โข, วาหน, ตถาคโต นิสฺสโฏ วิสํยุตฺโต วิปฺปมุตฺโต วิมริยาทีกเตน เจตสา วิหรติ, เวทนาย โข, วาหน …เป… สญฺญาย โข, วาหน … สงฺขาเรหิ โข, วาหน … วิญฺญาเณน โข, วาหน … ชาติยา โข, วาหน … ชราย โข, วาหน … มรเณน โข, วาหน … ทุกฺเขหิ โข, วาหน … กิเลเสหิ โข, วาหน, ตถาคโต นิสฺสโฏ วิสํยุตฺโต วิปฺปมุตฺโต วิมริยาทีกเตน เจตสา วิหรติฯ เสยฺยถาปิ, วาหน, อุปฺปลํ วา ปทุมํ วา ปุณฺฑรีกํ วา อุทเก ชาตํ อุทเก สํวฑฺฒํ อุทกา ปจฺจุคฺคมฺม ฐิตํ อนุปลิตฺตํ อุทเกน; เอวเมวํ โข, วาหน, อิเมหิ ทสหิ ธมฺเมหิ ตถาคโต นิสฺสโฏ วิสํยุตฺโต วิปฺปมุตฺโต วิมริยาทีกเตน เจตสา วิหรตี”ติฯ
“Bāhuna, the Realized One has escaped from ten things, so that he lives unattached, liberated, his mind free of limits. What ten? Form … feeling … perception … functioning patterns … consciousness … rebirth … old age … death … suffering … defilements … Suppose there was a blue water lily, or a pink or white lotus. Though it sprouted and grew in the water, it would rise up above the water and stand with no water clinging to it. In the same way, the Realized One has escaped from ten things, so that he lives unattached, liberated, his mind free of limits.”
