อากงฺขสุตฺต
One Might Wish
เอกํ สมยํ ภควา สาวตฺถิยํ วิหรติ เชตวเน อนาถปิณฺฑิกสฺส อาราเมฯ ตตฺร โข ภควา ภิกฺขู อามนฺเตสิ: “ภิกฺขโว”ติฯ
At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. There the Buddha addressed the bhikkhus, “Bhikkhus!”
“ภทนฺเต”ติ เต ภิกฺขู ภควโต ปจฺจโสฺสสุํฯ ภควา เอตทโวจ:
“Venerable sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this:
“สมฺปนฺนสีลา, ภิกฺขเว, วิหรถ สมฺปนฺนปาติโมกฺขา, ปาติโมกฺขสํวรสํวุตา วิหรถ อาจารโคจรสมฺปนฺนา อณุมตฺเตสุ วชฺเชสุ ภยทสฺสาวิโน, สมาทาย สิกฺขถ สิกฺขาปเทสุฯ
“Bhikkhus, live by the ethical precepts and the monastic code. Live restrained in the monastic code, conducting yourselves well and seeking alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, keep the rules you’ve undertaken.
อากงฺเขยฺย เจ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ ‘สพฺรหฺมจารีนํ ปิโย จสฺสํ มนาโป จ ครุ จ ภาวนีโย จา'ติ, สีเลเสฺววสฺส ปริปูรการี อชฺฌตฺตํ เจโตสมถมนุยุตฺโต อนิรากตชฺฌาโน วิปสฺสนาย สมนฺนาคโต พฺรูเหตา สุญฺญาคารานํฯ
A bhikkhu might wish: ‘May I be liked and approved by my spiritual companions, respected and admired.’ So let them fulfill their precepts, be committed to inner serenity of the heart, not neglect jhāna, be endowed with discernment, and frequent empty huts.
อากงฺเขยฺย เจ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ ‘ลาภี อสฺสํ จีวรปิณฺฑปาตเสนาสนคิลานปจฺจยเภสชฺชปริกฺขารานนฺ'ติ, สีเลเสฺววสฺส ปริปูรการี อชฺฌตฺตํ เจโตสมถมนุยุตฺโต อนิรากตชฺฌาโน วิปสฺสนาย สมนฺนาคโต พฺรูเหตา สุญฺญาคารานํฯ
A bhikkhu might wish: ‘May I receive robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick.’ So let them fulfill their precepts, be committed to inner serenity of the heart, not neglect jhāna, be endowed with discernment, and frequent empty huts.

A bhikkhu might wish: ‘May I realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and live having realized it with my own insight due to the ending of defilements.’ So let them fulfill their precepts, be committed to inner serenity of the heart, not neglect jhāna, be endowed with discernment, and frequent empty huts.
‘สมฺปนฺนสีลา, ภิกฺขเว, วิหรถ สมฺปนฺนปาติโมกฺขา, ปาติโมกฺขสํวรสํวุตา วิหรถ อาจารโคจรสมฺปนฺนา อณุมตฺเตสุ วชฺเชสุ ภยทสฺสาวิโน, สมาทาย สิกฺขถ สิกฺขาปเทสู'ติ, อิติ ยํ ตํ วุตฺตํ, อิทเมตํ ปฏิจฺจ วุตฺตนฺ”ติฯ
‘Live by the ethical precepts and the monastic code. Live restrained in the monastic code, conducting yourselves well and seeking alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, keep the rules you’ve undertaken.’ That’s what I said, and this is why I said it.”
