เอกํ สมยํ ภควา สาวตฺถิยํ วิหรติ เชตวเน อนาถปิณฺฑิกสฺส อาราเมฯ
At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.
เตน โข ปน สมเยน สมฺพหุลา ภิกฺขู ปจฺฉาภตฺตํ ปิณฺฑปาตปฏิกฺกนฺตา อุปฏฺฐานสาลายํ สนฺนิสินฺนา สนฺนิปติตา อเนกวิหิตํ ติรจฺฉานกถํ อนุยุตฺตา วิหรนฺติ, เสยฺยถิทํ—ราชกถํ โจรกถํ มหามตฺตกถํ …เป… อิติภวาภวกถํ อิติ วาติฯ
Now at that time, after the meal, on return from almsround, several bhikkhus sat together in the assembly hall. They engaged in all kinds of low talk, such as talk about kings, bandits, and ministers; talk about armies, threats, and wars; talk about food, drink, clothes, and beds; talk about garlands and fragrances; talk about family, vehicles, villages, towns, cities, and nations; talk about women and heroes; street talk and well talk; talk about the departed; miscellaneous talk; tales of land and sea; and talk about being reborn in this or that state of existence.
“ทสยิมานิ, ภิกฺขเว, ปาสํสานิ ฐานานิฯ กตมานิ ทส? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ อตฺตนา จ อปฺปิจฺโฉ โหติ, อปฺปิจฺฉกถญฺจ ภิกฺขูนํ กตฺตา โหติฯ ‘อปฺปิจฺโฉ ภิกฺขุ อปฺปิจฺฉกถญฺจ ภิกฺขูนํ กตฺตา'ติ ปาสํสเมตํ ฐานํฯ
“Bhikkhus, there are ten grounds for praise. What ten? It’s when a bhikkhu personally has few wishes, and speaks to the bhikkhus on having few wishes. This is a ground for praise.
อตฺตนา จ สนฺตุฏฺโฐ โหติ, สนฺตุฏฺฐิกถญฺจ ภิกฺขูนํ กตฺตา โหติฯ ‘สนฺตุฏฺโฐ ภิกฺขุ สนฺตุฏฺฐิกถญฺจ ภิกฺขูนํ กตฺตา'ติ ปาสํสเมตํ ฐานํฯ
A bhikkhu personally is content, and speaks to the bhikkhus on contentment. This is a ground for praise.
อตฺตนา จ ปวิวิตฺโต โหติ, ปวิเวกกถญฺจ ภิกฺขูนํ กตฺตา โหติฯ ‘ปวิวิตฺโต ภิกฺขุ ปวิเวกกถญฺจ ภิกฺขูนํ กตฺตา'ติ ปาสํสเมตํ ฐานํฯ
A bhikkhu personally is secluded, and speaks to the bhikkhus on seclusion. This is a ground for praise.
อตฺตนา จ อสํสฏฺโฐ โหติ, อสํสฏฺฐกถญฺจ ภิกฺขูนํ กตฺตา โหติฯ ‘อสํสฏฺโฐ ภิกฺขุ อสํสฏฺฐกถญฺจ ภิกฺขูนํ กตฺตา'ติ ปาสํสเมตํ ฐานํฯ
A bhikkhu personally doesn’t mix closely with others, and speaks to the bhikkhus on not mixing closely with others. This is a ground for praise.
อตฺตนา จ อารทฺธวีริโย โหติ, วีริยารมฺภกถญฺจ ภิกฺขูนํ กตฺตา โหติฯ ‘อารทฺธวีริโย ภิกฺขุ วีริยารมฺภกถญฺจ ภิกฺขูนํ กตฺตา'ติ ปาสํสเมตํ ฐานํฯ
A bhikkhu personally is energetic, and speaks to the bhikkhus on being energetic. This is a ground for praise.
อตฺตนา จ สีลสมฺปนฺโน โหติ, สีลสมฺปทากถญฺจ ภิกฺขูนํ กตฺตา โหติฯ ‘สีลสมฺปนฺโน ภิกฺขุ สีลสมฺปทากถญฺจ ภิกฺขูนํ กตฺตา'ติ ปาสํสเมตํ ฐานํฯ
A bhikkhu personally is accomplished in ethics, and speaks to the bhikkhus on being accomplished in ethics. This is a ground for praise.
อตฺตนา จ สมาธิสมฺปนฺโน โหติ, สมาธิสมฺปทากถญฺจ ภิกฺขูนํ กตฺตา โหติฯ ‘สมาธิสมฺปนฺโน ภิกฺขุ สมาธิสมฺปทากถญฺจ ภิกฺขูนํ กตฺตา'ติ ปาสํสเมตํ ฐานํฯ
A bhikkhu personally is accomplished in samādhi, and speaks to the bhikkhus on being accomplished in samādhi. This is a ground for praise.
อตฺตนา จ ปญฺญาสมฺปนฺโน โหติ, ปญฺญาสมฺปทากถญฺจ ภิกฺขูนํ กตฺตา โหติฯ ‘ปญฺญาสมฺปนฺโน ภิกฺขุ ปญฺญาสมฺปทากถญฺจ ภิกฺขูนํ กตฺตา'ติ ปาสํสเมตํ ฐานํฯ
A bhikkhu personally is accomplished in wisdom, and speaks to the bhikkhus on being accomplished in wisdom. This is a ground for praise.
อตฺตนา จ วิมุตฺติสมฺปนฺโน โหติ, วิมุตฺติสมฺปทากถญฺจ ภิกฺขูนํ กตฺตา โหติฯ ‘วิมุตฺติสมฺปนฺโน ภิกฺขุ วิมุตฺติสมฺปทากถญฺจ ภิกฺขูนํ กตฺตา'ติ ปาสํสเมตํ ฐานํฯ
A bhikkhu personally is accomplished in freedom, and speaks to the bhikkhus on being accomplished in freedom. This is a ground for praise.
อตฺตนา จ วิมุตฺติญาณทสฺสนสมฺปนฺโน โหติ, วิมุตฺติญาณทสฺสนสมฺปทากถญฺจ ภิกฺขูนํ กตฺตา โหติฯ ‘วิมุตฺติญาณทสฺสนสมฺปนฺโน ภิกฺขุ วิมุตฺติญาณทสฺสนสมฺปทากถญฺจ ภิกฺขูนํ กตฺตา'ติ ปาสํสเมตํ ฐานํฯ
A bhikkhu personally is accomplished in the knowledge and vision of freedom, and speaks to the bhikkhus on being accomplished in the knowledge and vision of freedom. This is a ground for praise.
อิมานิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ทส ปาสํสานิ ฐานานี”ติฯ
These are the ten grounds for praise.”
