At Naḷakapāna (2nd)

เอกํ สมยํ ภควา นฬกปาเน วิหรติ ปลาสวเนฯ

At one time the Buddha stayed near Naḷakapāna in the grove of flame-of-the-forest trees.

เตน โข ปน สมเยน ภควา ตทหุโปสเถ ภิกฺขุสงฺฆปริวุโต นิสินฺโน โหติฯ อถ โข ภควา พหุเทว รตฺตึ ภิกฺขูนํ ธมฺมิยา กถาย สนฺทเสฺสตฺวา สมาทเปตฺวา สมุตฺเตเชตฺวา สมฺปหํเสตฺวา ตุณฺหีภูตํ ตุณฺหีภูตํ ภิกฺขุสงฺฆํ อนุวิโลเกตฺวา อายสฺมนฺตํ สาริปุตฺตํ อามนฺเตสิ: “วิคตถินมิทฺโธ โข, สาริปุตฺต, ภิกฺขุสงฺโฆฯ ปฏิภาตุ ตํ, สาริปุตฺต, ภิกฺขูนํ ธมฺมี กถาฯ ปิฏฺฐิ เม อาคิลายติ; ตมหํ อายมิสฺสามี”ติฯ

Now, at that time it was the Uposatha day, and the Buddha was sitting surrounded by a Saṅgha of monks. The Buddha spent much of the night educating, encouraging, firing up, and inspiring the bhikkhus with a Dhamma talk. Then he looked around the Saṅgha of bhikkhus, who were so very silent. He addressed Venerable Sāriputta, “Sāriputta, the Saṅgha of bhikkhus is rid of dullness and drowsiness. Give them some Dhamma talk as you feel inspired. My back is sore, I’ll stretch it.”

“เอวํ, ภนฺเต”ติ โข อายสฺมา สาริปุตฺโต ภควโต ปจฺจโสฺสสิฯ

“Yes, sir,” Sāriputta replied.

อถ โข ภควา จตุคฺคุณํ สงฺฆาฏึ ปญฺญาเปตฺวา ทกฺขิเณน ปเสฺสน สีหเสยฺยํ กปฺเปสิ ปาเท ปาทํ อจฺจาธาย สโต สมฺปชาโน อุฏฺฐานสญฺญํ มนสิ กริตฺวาฯ

And then the Buddha spread out his outer robe folded in four and laid down in the lion’s posture—on the right side, placing one foot on top of the other—mindful and aware, and focused on the time of getting up.

ตตฺร โข อายสฺมา สาริปุตฺโต ภิกฺขู อามนฺเตสิ: “อาวุโส ภิกฺขเว”ติฯ

There Sāriputta addressed the bhikkhus: “Friends, bhikkhus!”

“อาวุโส”ติ โข เต ภิกฺขู อายสฺมโต สาริปุตฺตสฺส ปจฺจโสฺสสุํฯ อายสฺมา สาริปุตฺโต เอตทโวจ:

“Friend,” they replied. Sāriputta said this:

“ยสฺส กสฺสจิ, อาวุโส, สทฺธา นตฺถิ กุสเลสุ ธมฺเมสุ, หิรี นตฺถิ … โอตฺตปฺปํ นตฺถิ … วีริยํ นตฺถิ … ปญฺญา นตฺถิ … โสตาวธานํ นตฺถิ … ธมฺมธารณา นตฺถิ … อตฺถูปปริกฺขา นตฺถิ … ธมฺมานุธมฺมปฺปฏิปตฺติ นตฺถิ … อปฺปมาโท นตฺถิ กุสเลสุ ธมฺเมสุ, ตสฺส ยา รตฺติ วา ทิวโส วา อาคจฺฉติ, หานิเยว ปาฏิกงฺขา กุสเลสุ ธมฺเมสุ โน วุทฺธิฯ เสยฺยถาปิ, อาวุโส, กาฬปกฺเข จนฺทสฺส ยา รตฺติ วา ทิวโส วา อาคจฺฉติ, หายเตว วณฺเณน หายติ มณฺฑเลน หายติ อาภาย หายติ อาโรหปริณาเหน; เอวเมวํ โข, อาวุโส, ยสฺส กสฺสจิ สทฺธา นตฺถิ กุสเลสุ ธมฺเมสุ, หิรี นตฺถิ … โอตฺตปฺปํ นตฺถิ … วีริยํ นตฺถิ … ปญฺญา นตฺถิ … โสตาวธานํ นตฺถิ … ธมฺมธารณา นตฺถิ … อตฺถูปปริกฺขา นตฺถิ … ธมฺมานุธมฺมปฺปฏิปตฺติ นตฺถิ … อปฺปมาโท นตฺถิ กุสเลสุ ธมฺเมสุ, ตสฺส ยา รตฺติ วา ทิวโส วา อาคจฺฉติ, หานิเยว ปาฏิกงฺขา กุสเลสุ ธมฺเมสุ โน วุทฺธิฯ

“Friends, whoever has no faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom; who doesn’t want to listen, doesn’t memorize the teachings, examine their meaning, or practice accordingly, and is not diligent when it comes to skillful qualities can expect decline, not growth, in skillful qualities, whether by day or by night. It’s like the moon in the waning fortnight. Whether by day or by night, its beauty, roundness, light, and diameter and circumference only decline. In the same way, whoever has no faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom; who doesn’t want to listen, doesn’t memorize the teachings, examine their meaning, or practice accordingly, and is negligent when it comes to skillful qualities can expect decline, not growth, in skillful qualities, whether by day or by night.

Whoever has faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom; who wants to listen, memorizes the teachings, examines their meaning, and practices accordingly, and is diligent when it comes to skillful qualities can expect growth, not decline, in skillful qualities, whether by day or by night. It’s like the moon in the waxing fortnight. Whether by day or by night, its beauty, roundness, light, and diameter and circumference only grow. In the same way, whoever has faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom; who wants to listen, memorizes the teachings, examines their meaning, and practices accordingly, and is diligent when it comes to skillful qualities can expect growth, not decline, in skillful qualities, whether by day or by night.”

อถ โข ภควา ปจฺจุฏฺฐาย อายสฺมนฺตํ สาริปุตฺตํ อามนฺเตสิ:

Then the Buddha got up and said to Venerable Sāriputta:

“สาธุ สาธุ, สาริปุตฺตฯ ยสฺส กสฺสจิ, สาริปุตฺต, สทฺธา นตฺถิ กุสเลสุ ธมฺเมสุ หิรี นตฺถิ … โอตฺตปฺปํ นตฺถิ … ปญฺญา นตฺถิ … วีริยํ นตฺถิ … โสตาวธานํ นตฺถิ … ธมฺมธารณา นตฺถิ … อตฺถูปปริกฺขา นตฺถิ … ธมฺมานุธมฺมปฺปฏิปตฺติ นตฺถิ … อปฺปมาโท นตฺถิ กุสเลสุ ธมฺเมสุ ตสฺส ยา รตฺติ วา ทิวโส วา อาคจฺฉติ, หานิเยว ปาฏิกงฺขา กุสเลสุ ธมฺเมสุ โน วุทฺธิฯ เสยฺยถาปิ, สาริปุตฺต, กาฬปกฺเข จนฺทสฺส ยา รตฺติ วา ทิวโส วา อาคจฺฉติ, หายเตว วณฺเณน หายติ มณฺฑเลน หายติ อาภาย หายติ อาโรหปริณาเหน; เอวเมวํ โข, สาริปุตฺต, ยสฺส กสฺสจิ สทฺธา นตฺถิ กุสเลสุ ธมฺเมสุ …เป… อปฺปมาโท นตฺถิ กุสเลสุ ธมฺเมสุ, ตสฺส ยา รตฺติ วา ทิวโส วา อาคจฺฉติ, หานิเยว ปาฏิกงฺขา กุสเลสุ ธมฺเมสุ โน วุทฺธิฯ

“Good, good, Sāriputta! Whoever has no faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom; who doesn’t want to listen, doesn’t memorize the teachings, examine their meaning, or practice accordingly, and is negligent when it comes to skillful qualities can expect decline, not growth, in skillful qualities, whether by day or by night.
