Fragrances
අථ ඛෝ ආයස්මා ආනන්දෝ යේන භගවා තේනුපසඞ්කමි; උපසඞ්කමිත්වා භගවන්තං අභිවාදේත්වා ඒකමන්තං නිසීදි. ඒකමන්තං නිසින්නෝ ඛෝ ආයස්මා ආනන්දෝ භගවන්තං ඒතදවෝච:
Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
“තීණිමානි, භන්තේ, ගන්ධජාතානි, යේසං අනුවාතංයේව ගන්ධෝ ගච්ඡති, නෝ පටිවාතං. කතමානි තීණි? මූලගන්ධෝ, සාරගන්ධෝ, පුප්ඵගන්ධෝ—ඉමානි ඛෝ, භන්තේ, තීණි ගන්ධජාතානි, යේසං අනුවාතංයේව ගන්ධෝ ගච්ඡති, නෝ පටිවාතං. අත්ථි නු ඛෝ, භන්තේ, කිඤ්චි ගන්ධජාතං යස්ස අනුවාතම්පි ගන්ධෝ ගච්ඡති, පටිවාතම්පි ගන්ධෝ ගච්ඡති, අනුවාතපටිවාතම්පි ගන්ධෝ ගච්ඡතී”ති?
“Sir, there are these three kinds of fragrance that spread only with the wind, not against it. What three? The fragrance of roots, heartwood, and flowers. These are the three kinds of fragrance that spread only with the wind, not against it. Is there a kind of fragrance that spreads with the wind, and against it, and both ways?”
“අත්ථානන්ද, කිඤ්චි ගන්ධජාතං යස්ස අනුවාතම්පි ගන්ධෝ ගච්ඡති, පටිවාතම්පි ගන්ධෝ ගච්ඡති, අනුවාතපටිවාතම්පි ගන්ධෝ ගච්ඡතී”ති.
“There is, Ānanda, such a kind of fragrance.”
“කතමඤ්ච පන, භන්තේ, ගන්ධජාතං යස්ස අනුවාතම්පි ගන්ධෝ ගච්ඡති, පටිවාතම්පි ගන්ධෝ ගච්ඡති, අනුවාතපටිවාතම්පි ගන්ධෝ ගච්ඡතී”ති?
“So what, sir, is that kind of fragrance?”
“ඉධානන්ද, යස්මිං ගාමේ වා නිගමේ වා ඉත්ථී වා පුරිසෝ වා බුද්ධං සරණං ගතෝ හෝති, ධම්මං සරණං ගතෝ හෝති, සඞ්ඝං සරණං ගතෝ හෝති, පාණාතිපාතා පටිවිරතෝ හෝති, අදින්නාදානා පටිවිරතෝ හෝති, කාමේසුමිච්ඡාචාරා පටිවිරතෝ හෝති, මුසාවාදා පටිවිරතෝ හෝති, සුරාමේරයමජ්ජපමාදට්ඨානා පටිවිරතෝ හෝති, සීලවා හෝති කල්යාණධම්මෝ, විගතමලමච්ඡේරේන චේතසා අගාරං අජ්ඣාවසති මුත්තචාගෝ පයතපාණි වෝස්සග්ගරතෝ යාචයෝගෝ දානසංවිභාගරතෝ.
“It’s when, Ānanda, in some village or town, a woman or man has gone for refuge to the Buddha, the teaching, and the Saṅgha. They don’t kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, lie, or take alcoholic drinks that cause negligence. They’re ethical, of good character. They live at home with a heart rid of the stain of stinginess, freely generous, open-handed, loving to let go, committed to charity, loving to give and to share.
තස්ස දිසාසු සමණබ්රාහ්මණා වණ්ණං භාසන්ති: ‘අමුකස්මිං නාම ගාමේ වා නිගමේ වා ඉත්ථී වා පුරිසෝ වා බුද්ධං සරණං ගතෝ හෝති, ධම්මං සරණං ගතෝ හෝති, සඞ්ඝං සරණං ගතෝ හෝති, පාණාතිපාතා පටිවිරතෝ හෝති, අදින්නාදානා පටිවිරතෝ හෝති, කාමේසුමිච්ඡාචාරා පටිවිරතෝ හෝති, මුසාවාදා පටිවිරතෝ හෝති, සුරාමේරයමජ්ජපමාදට්ඨානා පටිවිරතෝ හෝති, සීලවා හෝති කල්යාණධම්මෝ, විගතමලමච්ඡේරේන චේතසා අගාරං අජ්ඣාවසති මුත්තචාගෝ පයතපාණි වෝස්සග්ගරතෝ යාචයෝගෝ දානසංවිභාගරතෝ(අ)ති. දේවතාපිස්ස වණ්ණං භාසන්ති: ‘අමුකස්මිං නාම ගාමේ වා නිගමේ වා ඉත්ථී වා පුරිසෝ වා බුද්ධං සරණං ගතෝ හෝති, ධම්මං සරණං ගතෝ හෝති, සඞ්ඝං සරණං ගතෝ හෝති, පාණාතිපාතා පටිවිරතෝ හෝති …පේ… සුරාමේරයමජ්ජපමාදට්ඨානා පටිවිරතෝ හෝති, සීලවා හෝති කල්යාණධම්මෝ, විගතමලමච්ඡේරේන චේතසා අගාරං අජ්ඣාවසති මුත්තචාගෝ පයතපාණි වෝස්සග්ගරතෝ යාචයෝගෝ දානසංවිභාගරතෝ(අ)ති. ඉදං ඛෝ තං, ආනන්ද, ගන්ධජාතං යස්ස අනුවාතම්පි ගන්ධෝ ගච්ඡති, පටිවාතම්පි ගන්ධෝ ගච්ඡති, අනුවාතපටිවාතම්පි ගන්ධෝ ගච්ඡතීති.
Ascetics and brahmins everywhere praise them for these good qualities; even the deities praise them. This is the kind of fragrance that spreads with the wind, and against it, and both.
න පුප්ඵගන්ධෝ පටිවාතමේති, න චන්දනං තගරමල්ලිකා වා; සතඤ්ච ගන්ධෝ පටිවාතමේති, සබ්බා දිසා සප්පුරිසෝ පවායතී”ති.
The fragrance of flowers
doesn’t spread against the wind, nor sandalwood, pinwheel flowers, or jasmine; but the fragrance of the goodspreads against the wind; a good person’s virtue spreads in every direction.”
