බාරාණසියං විහරන්ති ඉසිපතනේ මිගදායේ …පේ… ඒකමන්තං නිසින්නෝ ඛෝ ආයස්මා මහාකෝට්ඨිකෝ ආයස්මන්තං සාරිපුත්තං ඒතදවෝච:
At Varanasi. Mahākoṭṭhita said to Sāriputta:
“‘විජ්ජා, විජ්ජා(අ)ති, ආවුසෝ සාරිපුත්ත, වුච්චති. කතමා නු ඛෝ, ආවුසෝ, විජ්ජා; කිත්තාවතා ච විජ්ජාගතෝ හෝතී”ති?
“Friend Sāriputta, they speak of this thing called ‘knowledge’. What is knowledge? And how is a knowledgeable person defined?”
“ඉධාවුසෝ, සුතවා අරියසාවකෝ රූපස්ස සමුදයඤ්ච අත්ථඞ්ගමඤ්ච අස්සාදඤ්ච ආදීනවඤ්ච නිස්සරණඤ්ච යථාභූතං පජානාති. වේදනාය …පේ… සඤ්ඤාය … සඞ්ඛාරානං … විඤ්ඤාණස්ස සමුදයඤ්ච අත්ථඞ්ගමඤ්ච අස්සාදඤ්ච ආදීනවඤ්ච නිස්සරණඤ්ච යථාභූතං පජානාති.
“Friend, a learned noble disciple truly understands the origin, the ending, the gratification, the drawback, and the escape when it comes to form, feeling, perception, functioning patterns, and consciousness.
අයං වුච්චතාවුසෝ, විජ්ජා; ඒත්තාවතා ච විජ්ජාගතෝ හෝතී”ති.
This is called knowledge. And this is how a knowledgeable person is defined.”
