බාරාණසියං විහරන්ති ඉසිපතනේ මිගදායේ …පේ… ඒකමන්තං නිසින්නෝ ඛෝ ආයස්මා මහාකෝට්ඨිකෝ ආයස්මන්තං සාරිපුත්තං ඒතදවෝච:
At Varanasi. Mahākoṭṭhita said to Sāriputta:
“‘අවිජ්ජා, අවිජ්ජා(අ)ති, ආවුසෝ සාරිපුත්ත, වුච්චති. කතමා නු ඛෝ, ආවුසෝ, අවිජ්ජා; කිත්තාවතා ච අවිජ්ජාගතෝ හෝතී”ති?
“Friend Sāriputta, they speak of this thing called ‘ignorance’. What is ignorance? And how is an ignorant person defined?”
“ඉධාවුසෝ අස්සුතවා පුථුජ්ජනෝ රූපස්ස අස්සාදඤ්ච ආදීනවඤ්ච නිස්සරණඤ්ච යථාභූතං නප්පජානාති. වේදනාය …පේ… සඤ්ඤාය … සඞ්ඛාරානං … විඤ්ඤාණස්ස අස්සාදඤ්ච ආදීනවඤ්ච නිස්සරණඤ්ච යථාභූතං නප්පජානාති.
“Friend, an unlearned ordinary person doesn’t truly understand the gratification, the drawback, and the escape when it comes to form, feeling, perception, functioning patterns, and consciousness.
අයං වුච්චතාවුසෝ, අවිජ්ජා; ඒත්තාවතා ච අවිජ්ජාගතෝ හෝතී”ති.
This is called ignorance. And this is how an ignorant person is defined.”
