ဧဝံ မေ သုတံ—ဧကံ သမယံ ဘဂဝါ သက္ကေသု ဝိဟရတိ ကပိလဝတ္ထုသ္မိံ နိဂြေါဓာရာမေ၊ အထ ခေါ မဟာနာမော သက္ကော ယေန ဘဂဝါ တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ဘဂဝန္တံ အဘိဝါဒေတွာ ဧကမန္တံ နိသီဒိ၊ ဧကမန္တံ နိသိန္နော ခေါ မဟာနာမော သက္ကော ဘဂဝန္တံ ဧတဒဝေါစ:
So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Sakyans, near Kapilavatthu in the Banyan Tree Monastery. Then Mahānāma the Sakyan went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
“ဣဒံ, ဘန္တေ, ကပိလဝတ္ထု ဣဒ္ဓဉ္စေဝ ဖီတဉ္စ ဗာဟုဇညံ အာကိဏ္ဏမနုဿံ သမ္ဗာဓဗျူဟံ၊ သော ခွါဟံ, ဘန္တေ, ဘဂဝန္တံ ဝါ ပယိရုပါသိတွာ မနောဘာဝနီယေ ဝါ ဘိက္ခူ သာယနှသမယံ ကပိလဝတ္ထုံ ပဝိသန္တော; ဘန္တေနပိ ဟတ္ထိနာ သမာဂစ္ဆာမိ; ဘန္တေနပိ အဿေန သမာဂစ္ဆာမိ; ဘန္တေနပိ ရထေန သမာဂစ္ဆာမိ; ဘန္တေနပိ သကဋေန သမာဂစ္ဆာမိ; ဘန္တေနပိ ပုရိသေန သမာဂစ္ဆာမိ၊ တဿ မယှံ, ဘန္တေ, တသ္မိံ သမယေ မုဿတေဝ ဘဂဝန္တံ အာရဗ္ဘ သတိ, မုဿတိ ဓမ္မံ အာရဗ္ဘ သတိ, မုဿတိ သင်္ဃံ အာရဗ္ဘ သတိ၊ တဿ မယှံ, ဘန္တေ, ဧဝံ ဟောတိ: ‘ဣမမှိ စာဟံ သမယေ ကာလံ ကရေယျံ, ကာ မယှံ ဂတိ, ကော အဘိသမ္ပရာယော'”တိ?
“Sir, this Kapilavatthu is successful and prosperous, populous, full of people, with cramped cul-de-sacs. In the late afternoon, after paying homage to the Buddha or an esteemed bhikkhu, I enter Kapilavatthu. I encounter a stray elephant, horse, chariot, cart, or person. At that time I lose mindfulness regarding the Buddha, the teaching, and the Saṅgha. I think: ‘If I were to die at this time, where would I be reborn in my next life?’”
“မာ ဘာယိ, မဟာနာမ, မာ ဘာယိ, မဟာနာမ၊ အပါပကံ တေ မရဏံ ဘဝိဿတိ အပါပိကာ ကာလင်္ကိရိယာ၊ စတူဟိ ခေါ, မဟာနာမ, ဓမ္မေဟိ သမန္နာဂတော အရိယသာဝကော နိဗ္ဗာနနိန္နော ဟောတိ နိဗ္ဗာနပေါဏော နိဗ္ဗာနပဗ္ဘာရော၊ ကတမေဟိ စတူဟိ? ဣဓ, မဟာနာမ, အရိယသာဝကော ဗုဒ္ဓေ အဝေစ္စပ္ပသာဒေန သမန္နာဂတော ဟောတိ—ဣတိပိ သော ဘဂဝါ …ပေ… သတ္ထာ ဒေဝမနုဿာနံ ဗုဒ္ဓေါ ဘဂဝါတိ၊ ဓမ္မေ …ပေ… သင်္ဃေ …ပေ… အရိယကန္တေဟိ သီလေဟိ သမန္နာဂတော ဟောတိ အခဏ္ဍေဟိ …ပေ… သမာဓိသံဝတ္တနိကေဟိ၊
“Do not fear, Mahānāma, do not fear! Your death will not be a bad one; your passing will not be a bad one. A noble disciple who has four things slants, slopes, and inclines towards Nibbana. What four? It’s when a noble disciple has experiential confidence in the Buddha … the teaching … the Saṅgha … And they have the ethical conduct loved by the noble ones … leading to samādhi.
သေယျထာပိ, မဟာနာမ, ရုက္ခော ပါစီနနိန္နော ပါစီနပေါဏော ပါစီနပဗ္ဘာရော, သော မူလစ္ဆိန္နော ကတမေန ပပတေယျာ”တိ?
Suppose there was a tree that slants, slopes, and inclines to the east. If it was cut off at the root where would it fall?”
“ယေန, ဘန္တေ, နိန္နော ယေန ပေါဏော ယေန ပဗ္ဘာရော”တိ၊
“Sir, it would fall in the direction that it slants, slopes, and inclines.”
“ဧဝမေဝ ခေါ, မဟာနာမ, ဣမေဟိ စတူဟိ ဓမ္မေဟိ သမန္နာဂတော အရိယသာဝကော နိဗ္ဗာနနိန္နော ဟောတိ နိဗ္ဗာနပေါဏော နိဗ္ဗာနပဗ္ဘာရော”တိ၊
“In the same way, a noble disciple who has four things slants, slopes, and inclines towards Nibbana.”
