“ตีณิมานิ, ภิกฺขเว, อมาตาปุตฺติกานิ ภยานีติ อสฺสุตวา ปุถุชฺชโน ภาสติฯ กตมานิ ตีณิ?
“Bhikkhus, an unlearned ordinary person speaks of three perils that tear mothers and children apart. What three?
โหติ โส, ภิกฺขเว, สมโย ยํ มหาอคฺคิฑาโห วุฏฺฐาติฯ มหาอคฺคิฑาเห โข ปน, ภิกฺขเว, วุฏฺฐิเต เตน คามาปิ ฑยฺหนฺติ นิคมาปิ ฑยฺหนฺติ นคราปิ ฑยฺหนฺติฯ คาเมสุปิ ฑยฺหมาเนสุ นิคเมสุปิ ฑยฺหมาเนสุ นคเรสุปิ ฑยฺหมาเนสุ ตตฺถ มาตาปิ ปุตฺตํ นปฺปฏิลภติ, ปุตฺโตปิ มาตรํ นปฺปฏิลภติฯ อิทํ, ภิกฺขเว, ปฐมํ อมาตาปุตฺติกํ ภยนฺติ อสฺสุตวา ปุถุชฺชโน ภาสติฯ
There comes a time when a great fire flares up, and it burns villages, towns, and cities. When this happens, a mother can’t find her child, and a child can’t find their mother. This is the first peril that tears mothers and children apart.
ปุน จปรํ, ภิกฺขเว, โหติ โส สมโย ยํ มหาเมโฆ วุฏฺฐาติฯ มหาเมเฆ โข ปน, ภิกฺขเว, วุฏฺฐิเต มหาอุทกวาหโก สญฺชายติฯ มหาอุทกวาหเก โข ปน, ภิกฺขเว, สญฺชายนฺเต เตน คามาปิ วุยฺหนฺติ นิคมาปิ วุยฺหนฺติ นคราปิ วุยฺหนฺติฯ คาเมสุปิ วุยฺหมาเนสุ นิคเมสุปิ วุยฺหมาเนสุ นคเรสุปิ วุยฺหมาเนสุ ตตฺถ มาตาปิ ปุตฺตํ นปฺปฏิลภติ, ปุตฺโตปิ มาตรํ นปฺปฏิลภติฯ อิทํ, ภิกฺขเว, ทุติยํ อมาตาปุตฺติกํ ภยนฺติ อสฺสุตวา ปุถุชฺชโน ภาสติฯ
Furthermore, there comes a time when a great storm gathers, and it unleashes a mighty flood that sweeps away villages, towns, and cities. When this happens, a mother can’t find her child, and a child can’t find their mother. This is the second peril that tears mothers and children apart.
ปุน จปรํ, ภิกฺขเว, โหติ โส สมโย ยํ ภยํ โหติ อฏวิสงฺโกโป, จกฺกสมารุฬฺหา ชานปทา ปริยายนฺติฯ ภเย โข ปน, ภิกฺขเว, สติ อฏวิสงฺโกเป จกฺกสมารุเฬฺหสุ ชานปเทสุ ปริยายนฺเตสุ ตตฺถ มาตาปิ ปุตฺตํ นปฺปฏิลภติ, ปุตฺโตปิ มาตรํ นปฺปฏิลภติฯ อิทํ, ภิกฺขเว, ตติยํ อมาตาปุตฺติกํ ภยนฺติ อสฺสุตวา ปุถุชฺชโน ภาสติฯ
Furthermore, there comes a time of peril from wild savages, and the countryfolk mount their vehicles and flee everywhere. When this happens, a mother can’t find her child, and a child can’t find their mother. This is the third peril that tears mothers and children apart.
อิมานิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ตีณิ อมาตาปุตฺติกานิ ภยานีติ อสฺสุตวา ปุถุชฺชโน ภาสติฯ

There are three perils that tear mothers and children apart. What three?
ชราภยํ, พฺยาธิภยํ, มรณภยนฺติฯ น, ภิกฺขเว, มาตา ปุตฺตํ ชีรมานํ เอวํ ลภติ: ‘อหํ ชีรามิ, มา เม ปุตฺโต ชีรี'ติ; ปุตฺโต วา ปน มาตรํ ชีรมานํ น เอวํ ลภติ: ‘อหํ ชีรามิ, มา เม มาตา ชีรี'ติฯ
The perils of old age, sickness, and death. When a child is growing old, a mother doesn’t get her wish: ‘Let me grow old, may my child not grow old!’ When a mother is growing old, a child doesn’t get their wish: ‘Let me grow old, may my mother not grow old!’
น, ภิกฺขเว, มาตา ปุตฺตํ พฺยาธิยมานํ เอวํ ลภติ: ‘อหํ พฺยาธิยามิ, มา เม ปุตฺโต พฺยาธิยี'ติ; ปุตฺโต วา ปน มาตรํ พฺยาธิยมานํ น เอวํ ลภติ: ‘อหํ พฺยาธิยามิ, มา เม มาตา พฺยาธิยี'ติฯ
When a child is sick, a mother doesn’t get her wish: ‘Let me be sick, may my child not be sick!’ When a mother is sick, a child doesn’t get their wish: ‘Let me be sick, may my mother not be sick!’
น, ภิกฺขเว, มาตา ปุตฺตํ มียมานํ เอวํ ลภติ: ‘อหํ มียามิ, มา เม ปุตฺโต มียี'ติ; ปุตฺโต วา ปน มาตรํ มียมานํ น เอวํ ลภติ: ‘อหํ มียามิ, มา เม มาตา มียี'ติฯ อิมานิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ตีณิ อมาตาปุตฺติกานิ ภยานีติฯ
When a child is dying, a mother doesn’t get her wish: ‘Let me die, may my child not die!’ When a mother is dying, a child doesn’t get their wish: ‘Let me die, may my mother not die!’ These are the three perils that tear mothers and children apart.
อตฺถิ, ภิกฺขเว, มคฺโค อตฺถิ ปฏิปทา อิเมสญฺจ ติณฺณํ สมาตาปุตฺติกานํ ภยานํ อิเมสญฺจ ติณฺณํ อมาตาปุตฺติกานํ ภยานํ ปหานาย สมติกฺกมาย สํวตฺตติฯ กตโม จ, ภิกฺขเว, มคฺโค กตมา จ ปฏิปทา อิเมสญฺจ ติณฺณํ สมาตาปุตฺติกานํ ภยานํ อิเมสญฺจ ติณฺณํ อมาตาปุตฺติกานํ ภยานํ ปหานาย สมติกฺกมาย สํวตฺตติ? อยเมว อริโย อฏฺฐงฺคิโก มคฺโค, เสยฺยถิทํ—สมฺมาทิฏฺฐิ, สมฺมาสงฺกปฺโป, สมฺมาวาจา, สมฺมากมฺมนฺโต, สมฺมาอาชีโว, สมฺมาวายาโม, สมฺมาสติ, สมฺมาสมาธิฯ อยํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, มคฺโค อยํ ปฏิปทา อิเมสญฺจ ติณฺณํ สมาตาปุตฺติกานํ ภยานํ อิเมสญฺจ ติณฺณํ อมาตาปุตฺติกานํ ภยานํ ปหานาย สมติกฺกมาย สํวตฺตตี”ติฯ
There is a path and a practice that leads to giving up and going beyond the three perils that don’t tear mothers and children apart, and the three perils that do tear mothers and children apart. What is that path and practice? It is simply this noble eightfold path, that is: right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right samādhi. This is the path, this is the practice that leads to giving up and going beyond the three perils that don’t tear mothers and children apart, and the three perils that do tear mothers and children apart.”
