“ตโยเม, ภิกฺขเว, อาสวาฯ กตเม ตโย? กามาสโว, ภวาสโว, อวิชฺชาสโว—อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, ตโย อาสวาฯ
“Bhikkhus, there are these three defilements. What three? The defilements of sensuality, desire to be reborn, and ignorance. These are the three defilements.
อิเมสํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ติณฺณนฺนํ อาสวานํ อภิญฺญาย ปริญฺญาย ปริกฺขยาย ปหานาย …เป… อยํ อริโย อฏฺฐงฺคิโก มคฺโค ภาเวตพฺโพ”ติฯ
The noble eightfold path should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these three defilements.”
