“เสยฺยถาปิ, ภิกฺขเว, อุปฺปนฺนํ มหาเมฆํ, ตเมนํ มหาวาโต อนฺตราเยว อนฺตรธาเปติ วูปสเมติ; เอวเมว โข, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ อริยํ อฏฺฐงฺคิกํ มคฺคํ ภาเวนฺโต อริยํ อฏฺฐงฺคิกํ มคฺคํ พหุลีกโรนฺโต อุปฺปนฺนุปฺปนฺเน ปาปเก อกุสเล ธมฺเม อนฺตราเยว อนฺตรธาเปติ วูปสเมติฯ
“Bhikkhus, when a large storm has arisen, a strong wind disperses and settles it as it proceeds. In the same way, a bhikkhu who develops and cultivates the noble eightfold path disperses and stills bad, unskillful qualities as they proceed.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ อริยํ อฏฺฐงฺคิกํ มคฺคํ ภาเวนฺโต อริยํ อฏฺฐงฺคิกํ มคฺคํ พหุลีกโรนฺโต อุปฺปนฺนุปฺปนฺเน ปาปเก อกุสเล ธมฺเม อนฺตราเยว อนฺตรธาเปติ วูปสเมติ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ สมฺมาทิฏฺฐึ ภาเวติ …เป… สมฺมาสมาธึ ภาเวติ วิเวกนิสฺสิตํ วิราคนิสฺสิตํ นิโรธนิสฺสิตํ โวสฺสคฺคปริณามึ … เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ อริยํ อฏฺฐงฺคิกํ มคฺคํ ภาเวนฺโต อริยํ อฏฺฐงฺคิกํ มคฺคํ พหุลีกโรนฺโต อุปฺปนฺนุปฺปนฺเน ปาปเก อกุสเล ธมฺเม อนฺตราเยว อนฺตรธาเปติ วูปสเมตี”ติฯ
And how does a bhikkhu who develops the noble eightfold path disperse and still bad, unskillful qualities as they proceed? It’s when a bhikkhu develops right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right samādhi, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go. That’s how a bhikkhu who develops and cultivates the noble eightfold path disperses and stills bad, unskillful qualities as they proceed.”
