“ตโยเม, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมึฯ กตเม ตโย? นิราโส, อาสํโส, วิคตาโสฯ กตโม จ, ภิกฺขเว ปุคฺคโล นิราโส? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล นีเจ กุเล ปจฺจาชาโต โหติ, จณฺฑาลกุเล วา เวนกุเล วา เนสาทกุเล วา รถการกุเล วา ปุกฺกุสกุเล วา ทลิทฺเท อปฺปนฺนปานโภชเน กสิรวุตฺติเก, ยตฺถ กสิเรน ฆาสจฺฉาโท ลพฺภติฯ โส จ โหติ ทุพฺพณฺโณ ทุทฺทสิโก โอโกฏิมโก พวฺหาพาโธ กาโณ วา กุณี วา ขญฺโช วา ปกฺขหโต วา, น ลาภี อนฺนสฺส ปานสฺส วตฺถสฺส ยานสฺส มาลาคนฺธวิเลปนสฺส เสยฺยาวสถปทีเปยฺยสฺสฯ โส สุณาติ: ‘อิตฺถนฺนาโม กิร ขตฺติโย ขตฺติเยหิ ขตฺติยาภิเสเกน อภิสิตฺโต'ติฯ ตสฺส น เอวํ โหติ: ‘กุทาสฺสุ นาม มมฺปิ ขตฺติยา ขตฺติยาภิเสเกน อภิสิญฺจิสฺสนฺตี'ติฯ อยํ วุจฺจติ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล นิราโสฯ
“These three kinds of people are found in the world. What three? The hopeless, the hopeful, and the one who has done away with hope. And what, bhikkhus, is a hopeless person? It’s when some person is reborn in a low family—a family of outcastes, bamboo-workers, hunters, chariot-makers, or waste-collectors—poor, with little to eat or drink, where life is tough, and food and shelter are hard to find. And they’re ugly, unsightly, deformed, sickly—one-eyed, crippled, lame, or half-paralyzed. They don’t get to have food, drink, clothes, and vehicles; garlands, fragrances, and makeup; or bed, house, and lighting. They hear this: ‘They say the khattiya class persons have anointed the khattiya class person named so-and-so as king.’ It never occurs to them: ‘Oh, when will the khattiya class persons anoint me too as king?’ This is called a hopeless person.
กตโม จ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล อาสํโส? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, รญฺโญ ขตฺติยสฺส มุทฺธาวสิตฺตสฺส เชฏฺโฐ ปุตฺโต โหติ อาภิเสโก อนภิสิตฺโต อจลปฺปตฺโตฯ โส สุณาติ: ‘อิตฺถนฺนาโม กิร ขตฺติโย ขตฺติเยหิ ขตฺติยาภิเสเกน อภิสิตฺโต'ติฯ ตสฺส เอวํ โหติ: ‘กุทาสฺสุ นาม มมฺปิ ขตฺติยา ขตฺติยาภิเสเกน อภิสิญฺจิสฺสนฺตี'ติฯ อยํ วุจฺจติ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล อาสํโสฯ
And what, bhikkhus, is a hopeful person? It’s when some person is the eldest son of an anointed khattiya king. He has not yet been anointed, but is eligible, and has been confirmed in the succession. He hears this: ‘They say that the khattiya class persons have anointed the khattiya class person named so-and-so as king.’ It occurs to him: ‘Oh, when will the khattiya class persons anoint me too as king?’ This is called a hopeful person.
กตโม จ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล วิคตาโส? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ราชา โหติ ขตฺติโย มุทฺธาวสิตฺโตฯ โส สุณาติ: ‘อิตฺถนฺนาโม กิร ขตฺติโย ขตฺติเยหิ ขตฺติยาภิเสเกน อภิสิตฺโต'ติฯ ตสฺส น เอวํ โหติ: ‘กุทาสฺสุ นาม มมฺปิ ขตฺติยา ขตฺติยาภิเสเกน อภิสิญฺจิสฺสนฺตี'ติฯ ตํ กิสฺส เหตุ? ยา หิสฺส, ภิกฺขเว, ปุพฺเพ อนภิสิตฺตสฺส อภิเสกาสา สา ปฏิปฺปสฺสทฺธาฯ อยํ วุจฺจติ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล วิคตาโสฯ
And what, bhikkhus, is a person who has done away with hope? It’s when a king has been anointed. He hears this: ‘They say that the khattiya class persons have anointed the khattiya class person named so-and-so as king.’ It never occurs to him: ‘Oh, when will the khattiya class persons anoint me too as king?’ Why is that? Because the former hope he had to be anointed has now died down. This is called a person who has done away with hope.
อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, ตโย ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมึฯ
These are the three kinds of people found in the world.
เอวเมวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ตโย ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา ภิกฺขูสุฯ กตเม ตโย? นิราโส, อาสํโส, วิคตาโสฯ กตโม จ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล นิราโส? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล ทุสฺสีโล โหติ ปาปธมฺโม อสุจิ สงฺกสฺสรสมาจาโร ปฏิจฺฉนฺนกมฺมนฺโต อสฺสมโณ สมณปฏิญฺโญ อพฺรหฺมจารี พฺรหฺมจาริปฏิญฺโญ อนฺโตปูติ อวสฺสุโต กสมฺพุชาโตฯ โส สุณาติ: ‘อิตฺถนฺนาโม กิร ภิกฺขุ อาสวานํ ขยา อนาสวํ เจโตวิมุตฺตึ ปญฺญาวิมุตฺตึ ทิฏฺเฐว ธมฺเม สยํ อภิญฺญา สจฺฉิกตฺวา อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรตี'ติฯ ตสฺส น เอวํ โหติ: ‘กุทาสฺสุ นาม อหมฺปิ อาสวานํ ขยา อนาสวํ เจโตวิมุตฺตึ ปญฺญาวิมุตฺตึ ทิฏฺเฐว ธมฺเม สยํ อภิญฺญา สจฺฉิกตฺวา อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหริสฺสามี'ติฯ อยํ วุจฺจติ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล นิราโสฯ
In the same way, these three kinds of people are found among the bhikkhus. What three? The hopeless, the hopeful, and the one who has done away with hope. And what, bhikkhus, is a hopeless person? It’s when some person is unethical, of bad qualities, filthy, with suspicious behavior, underhand, no true ascetic or spiritual practitioner—though claiming to be one—rotten inside, corrupt, and depraved. They hear this: ‘They say that the bhikkhu named so-and-so has realized the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.’ It never occurs to them: ‘Oh, when will I too realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and live having realized it with my own insight due to the ending of defilements.’ This is called a hopeless person.
กตโม จ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล อาสํโส? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ สีลวา โหติ กลฺยาณธมฺโมฯ โส สุณาติ: ‘อิตฺถนฺนาโม กิร ภิกฺขุ อาสวานํ ขยา อนาสวํ เจโตวิมุตฺตึ ปญฺญาวิมุตฺตึ ทิฏฺเฐว ธมฺเม สยํ อภิญฺญา สจฺฉิกตฺวา อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรตี'ติฯ ตสฺส เอวํ โหติ: ‘กุทาสฺสุ นาม อหมฺปิ อาสวานํ ขยา อนาสวํ เจโตวิมุตฺตึ ปญฺญาวิมุตฺตึ ทิฏฺเฐว ธมฺเม สยํ อภิญฺญา สจฺฉิกตฺวา อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหริสฺสามี'ติฯ อยํ วุจฺจติ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล อาสํโสฯ
And what, bhikkhus, is a hopeful person? It’s when a bhikkhu is ethical, of good character. They hear this: ‘They say that the bhikkhu named so-and-so has realized the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.’ It occurs to them: ‘Oh, when will I too realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and live having realized it with my own insight due to the ending of defilements.’ This is called a hopeful person.

And what, bhikkhus, is a person who has done away with hope? It’s when a bhikkhu is a perfected one, who has ended all defilements. They hear this: ‘They say that the bhikkhu named so-and-so has realized the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.’ It never occurs to them: ‘Oh, when will I too realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and live having realized it with my own insight due to the ending of defilements.’ Why is that? Because the former hope they had to be freed has now died down. This is called a person who has done away with hope.
อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, ตโย ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา ภิกฺขูสู”ติฯ
These are the three people found among the bhikkhus.”
