Diligence
အထ ခေါ အညတရော ဗြာဟ္မဏော ယေန ဘဂဝါ တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ဘဂဝတာ သဒ္ဓိံ သမ္မောဒိ၊ သမ္မောဒနီယံ ကထံ သာရဏီယံ ဝီတိသာရေတွာ ဧကမန္တံ နိသီဒိ၊ ဧကမန္တံ နိသိန္နော ခေါ သော ဗြာဟ္မဏော ဘဂဝန္တံ ဧတဒဝေါစ:
Then a certain brahmin went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:
“အတ္ထိ နု ခေါ, ဘော ဂေါတမ, ဧကော ဓမ္မော ဘာဝိတော ဗဟုလီကတော ယော ဥဘော အတ္ထေ သမဓိဂ္ဂယှ တိဋ္ဌတိ—ဒိဋ္ဌဓမ္မိကဉ္စေဝ အတ္ထံ, ယော စ အတ္ထော သမ္ပရာယိကော”တိ?
“Master Gotama, is there one thing that, when developed and cultivated, secures benefits for both the present life and lives to come?”
“အတ္ထိ ခေါ, ဗြာဟ္မဏ, ဧကော ဓမ္မော ဘာဝိတော ဗဟုလီကတော ယော ဥဘော အတ္ထေ သမဓိဂ္ဂယှ တိဋ္ဌတိ—ဒိဋ္ဌဓမ္မိကဉ္စေဝ အတ္ထံ, ယော စ အတ္ထော သမ္ပရာယိကော”တိ၊
“There is, brahmin.”
“ကတမော ပန, ဘော ဂေါတမ, ဧကော ဓမ္မော ဘာဝိတော ဗဟုလီကတော ယော ဥဘော အတ္ထေ သမဓိဂ္ဂယှ တိဋ္ဌတိ—ဒိဋ္ဌဓမ္မိကဉ္စေဝ အတ္ထံ, ယော စ အတ္ထော သမ္ပရာယိကော”တိ?
“So what is it?”
“အပ္ပမာဒေါ ခေါ, ဗြာဟ္မဏ, ဧကော ဓမ္မော ဘာဝိတော ဗဟုလီကတော ဥဘော အတ္ထေ သမဓိဂ္ဂယှ တိဋ္ဌတိ—ဒိဋ္ဌဓမ္မိကဉ္စေဝ အတ္ထံ, ယော စ အတ္ထော သမ္ပရာယိကော၊
“Diligence, brahmin, is one thing that, when developed and cultivated, secures benefits for both the present life and lives to come.
သေယျထာပိ, ဗြာဟ္မဏ, ယာနိ ကာနိစိ ဇင်္ဂလာနံ ပါဏာနံ ပဒဇာတာနိ, သဗ္ဗာနိ တာနိ ဟတ္ထိပဒေ သမောဓာနံ ဂစ္ဆန္တိ; ဟတ္ထိပဒံ တေသံ အဂ္ဂမက္ခာယတိ, ယဒိဒံ မဟန္တတ္တေန၊ ဧဝမေဝံ ခေါ, ဗြာဟ္မဏ, အပ္ပမာဒေါ ဧကော ဓမ္မော ဘာဝိတော ဗဟုလီကတော ဥဘော အတ္ထေ သမဓိဂ္ဂယှ တိဋ္ဌတိ—ဒိဋ္ဌဓမ္မိကဉ္စေဝ အတ္ထံ, ယော စ အတ္ထော သမ္ပရာယိကော၊
The footprints of all creatures that walk can fit inside an elephant’s footprint. So an elephant’s footprint is said to be the biggest of them all. In the same way, diligence is one thing that, when developed and cultivated, secures benefits for both the present life and lives to come.
သေယျထာပိ, ဗြာဟ္မဏ, ကူဋာဂါရဿ ယာ ကာစိ ဂေါပါနသိယော သဗ္ဗာ တာ ကူဋင်္ဂမာ ကူဋနိန္နာ ကူဋသမောသရဏာ, ကူဋံ တာသံ အဂ္ဂမက္ခာယတိ; ဧဝမေဝံ ခေါ, ဗြာဟ္မဏ …ပေ…၊

The radiance of all the stars is not worth a sixteenth part of the moon’s radiance, so the moon’s radiance is said to be the best of them all. In the same way, diligence is one thing that, when developed and cultivated, secures benefits for both the present life and lives to come.
အယံ ခေါ, ဗြာဟ္မဏ, ဧကော ဓမ္မော ဘာဝိတော ဗဟုလီကတော ဥဘော အတ္ထေ သမဓိဂ္ဂယှ တိဋ္ဌတိ—ဒိဋ္ဌဓမ္မိကဉ္စေဝ အတ္ထံ, ယော စ အတ္ထော သမ္ပရာယိကော”တိ၊
This is the one thing that, when developed and cultivated, secures benefits for both the present life and lives to come.”
“အဘိက္ကန္တံ, ဘော ဂေါတမ, အဘိက္ကန္တံ, ဘော ဂေါတမ …ပေ… ဥပါသကံ မံ ဘဝံ ဂေါတမော ဓာရေတု အဇ္ဇတဂ္ဂေ ပါဏုပေတံ သရဏံ ဂတန်”တိ၊
“Excellent, Master Gotama! Excellent! … From this day forth, may Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.”
