Anuruddha and the Agreeable Deities
ဧကံ သမယံ ဘဂဝါ ကောသမ္ဗိယံ ဝိဟရတိ ဃောသိတာရာမေ၊
At one time the Buddha was staying near Kosambī, in Ghosita’s Monastery.
တေန ခေါ ပန သမယေန အာယသ္မာ အနုရုဒ္ဓေါ ဒိဝါဝိဟာရံ ဂတော ဟောတိ ပဋိသလ္လီနော၊ အထ ခေါ သမ္ဗဟုလာ မနာပကာယိကာ ဒေဝတာ ယေနာယသ္မာ အနုရုဒ္ဓေါ တေနုပသင်္ကမိံသု; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ အာယသ္မန္တံ အနုရုဒ္ဓံ အဘိဝါဒေတွာ ဧကမန္တံ အဋ္ဌံသု၊ ဧကမန္တံ ဌိတာ ခေါ တာ ဒေဝတာ အာယသ္မန္တံ အနုရုဒ္ဓံ ဧတဒဝေါစုံ:
Now at that time Venerable Anuruddha had gone into retreat for the day’s meditation. Then several deities of the Lovable Host went up to Venerable Anuruddha, bowed, stood to one side, and said to him:
“မယံ, ဘန္တေ အနုရုဒ္ဓ, မနာပကာယိကာ နာမ ဒေဝတာ တီသု ဌာနေသု ဣဿရိယံ ကာရေမ ဝသံ ဝတ္တေမ၊ မယံ, ဘန္တေ အနုရုဒ္ဓ, ယာဒိသကံ ဝဏ္ဏံ အာကင်္ခါမ တာဒိသကံ ဝဏ္ဏံ ဌာနသော ပဋိလဘာမ; ယာဒိသကံ သရံ အာကင်္ခါမ တာဒိသကံ သရံ ဌာနသော ပဋိလဘာမ; ယာဒိသကံ သုခံ အာကင်္ခါမ တာဒိသကံ သုခံ ဌာနသော ပဋိလဘာမ၊ မယံ, ဘန္တေ အနုရုဒ္ဓ, မနာပကာယိကာ နာမ ဒေဝတာ ဣမေသု တီသု ဌာနေသု ဣဿရိယံ ကာရေမ ဝသံ ဝတ္တေမာ”တိ၊
“Honorable Anuruddha, we are the deities called ‘Lovable’. We wield authority and control over three things. We can turn any color we want on the spot. We can get any voice that we want on the spot. We can get any pleasure that we want on the spot. We are the deities called ‘Lovable’. We wield authority and control over these three things.”
အထ ခေါ အာယသ္မတော အနုရုဒ္ဓဿ ဧတဒဟောသိ: “အဟော ဝတိမာ ဒေဝတာ သဗ္ဗာဝ နီလာ အဿု နီလဝဏ္ဏာ နီလဝတ္ထာ နီလာလင်္ကာရာ”တိ၊ အထ ခေါ တာ ဒေဝတာ အာယသ္မတော အနုရုဒ္ဓဿ စိတ္တမညာယ သဗ္ဗာဝ နီလာ အဟေသုံ နီလဝဏ္ဏာ နီလဝတ္ထာ နီလာလင်္ကာရာ၊
Then Venerable Anuruddha thought, “If only these deities would all turn blue, of blue color, clad in blue, adorned with blue!” Then those deities, knowing Anuruddha’s thought, all turned blue.
အထ ခေါ အာယသ္မတော အနုရုဒ္ဓဿ ဧတဒဟောသိ: “အဟော ဝတိမာ ဒေဝတာ သဗ္ဗာဝ ပီတာ အဿု …ပေ…
Then Venerable Anuruddha thought, “If only these deities would all turn yellow …”
သဗ္ဗာဝ လောဟိတကာ အဿု …
“If only these gods would all turn red …”
သဗ္ဗာဝ ဩဒါတာ အဿု ဩဒါတဝဏ္ဏာ ဩဒါတဝတ္ထာ ဩဒါတာလင်္ကာရာ”တိ၊ အထ ခေါ တာ ဒေဝတာ အာယသ္မတော အနုရုဒ္ဓဿ စိတ္တမညာယ သဗ္ဗာဝ ဩဒါတာ အဟေသုံ ဩဒါတဝဏ္ဏာ ဩဒါတဝတ္ထာ ဩဒါတာလင်္ကာရာ၊
“If only these gods would all turn white …” Then those deities, knowing Anuruddha’s thought, all turned white.
အထ ခေါ တာ ဒေဝတာ ဧကာ စ ဂါယိ ဧကာ စ နစ္စိ ဧကာ စ အစ္ဆရံ ဝါဒေသိ၊ သေယျထာပိ နာမ ပဉ္စင်္ဂိကဿ တူရိယဿ သုဝိနီတဿ သုပ္ပဋိပတာဠိတဿ ကုသလေဟိ သုသမန္နာဟတဿ သဒ္ဒေါ ဟောတိ ဝဂ္ဂု စ ရဇနီယော စ ကမနီယော စ ပေမနီယော စ မဒနီယော စ; ဧဝမေဝံ တာသံ ဒေဝတာနံ အလင်္ကာရာနံ သဒ္ဒေါ ဟောတိ ဝဂ္ဂု စ ရဇနီယော စ ကမနီယော စ ပေမနီယော စ မဒနီယော စ၊ အထ ခေါ အာယသ္မာ အနုရုဒ္ဓေါ ဣန္ဒြိယာနိ ဩက္ခိပိ၊
Then one of those deities sang, one danced, and one snapped her fingers. Suppose there was a quintet made up of skilled musicians who had practiced well and kept excellent rhythm. They’d sound graceful, tantalizing, sensuous, lovely, and intoxicating. In the same way the performance by those deities sounded graceful, tantalizing, sensuous, lovely, and intoxicating. But Venerable Anuruddha averted his senses.
အထ ခေါ တာ ဒေဝတာ “န ခွယျော အနုရုဒ္ဓေါ သာဒိယတီ”တိ တတ္ထေဝန္တရဓာယိံသု၊ အထ ခေါ အာယသ္မာ အနုရုဒ္ဓေါ သာယနှသမယံ ပဋိသလ္လာနာ ဝုဋ္ဌိတော ယေန ဘဂဝါ တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ဘဂဝန္တံ အဘိဝါဒေတွာ ဧကမန္တံ နိသီဒိ၊ ဧကမန္တံ နိသိန္နော ခေါ အာယသ္မာ အနုရုဒ္ဓေါ ဘဂဝန္တံ ဧတဒဝေါစ:
Then those deities, thinking “Master Anuruddha isn’t enjoying this,” vanished right there. Then in the late afternoon, Anuruddha came out of retreat and went to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and told him what had happened, adding:
“ဣဓာဟံ, ဘန္တေ, ဒိဝါဝိဟာရံ ဂတော ဟောမိ ပဋိသလ္လီနော၊ အထ ခေါ, ဘန္တေ, သမ္ဗဟုလာ မနာပကာယိကာ ဒေဝတာ ယေနာဟံ တေနုပသင်္ကမိံသု; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ မံ အဘိဝါဒေတွာ ဧကမန္တံ အဋ္ဌံသု၊ ဧကမန္တံ ဌိတာ ခေါ, ဘန္တေ, တာ ဒေဝတာ မံ ဧတဒဝေါစုံ: ‘မယံ, ဘန္တေ အနုရုဒ္ဓ, မနာပကာယိကာ နာမ ဒေဝတာ တီသု ဌာနေသု ဣဿရိယံ ကာရေမ ဝသံ ဝတ္တေမ၊ မယံ, ဘန္တေ အနုရုဒ္ဓ, ယာဒိသကံ ဝဏ္ဏံ အာကင်္ခါမ တာဒိသကံ ဝဏ္ဏံ ဌာနသော ပဋိလဘာမ; ယာဒိသကံ သရံ အာကင်္ခါမ တာဒိသကံ သရံ ဌာနသော ပဋိလဘာမ; ယာဒိသကံ သုခံ အာကင်္ခါမ တာဒိသကံ သုခံ ဌာနသော ပဋိလဘာမ၊ မယံ, ဘန္တေ အနုရုဒ္ဓ, မနာပကာယိကာ နာမ ဒေဝတာ ဣမေသု တီသု ဌာနေသု ဣဿရိယံ ကာရေမ ဝသံ ဝတ္တေမာ'တိ၊ တဿ မယှံ, ဘန္တေ, ဧတဒဟောသိ: ‘အဟော ဝတိမာ ဒေဝတာ သဗ္ဗာဝ နီလာ အဿု နီလဝဏ္ဏာ နီလဝတ္ထာ နီလာလင်္ကာရာ'တိ၊ အထ ခေါ, ဘန္တေ, တာ ဒေဝတာ မမ စိတ္တမညာယ သဗ္ဗာဝ နီလာ အဟေသုံ နီလဝဏ္ဏာ နီလဝတ္ထာ နီလာလင်္ကာရာ၊
တဿ မယှံ, ဘန္တေ, ဧတဒဟောသိ: ‘အဟော ဝတိမာ ဒေဝတာ သဗ္ဗာဝ ပီတာ အဿု …ပေ… သဗ္ဗာဝ လောဟိတကာ အဿု …ပေ… သဗ္ဗာဝ ဩဒါတာ အဿု ဩဒါတဝဏ္ဏာ ဩဒါတဝတ္ထာ ဩဒါတာလင်္ကာရာ'တိ၊ အထ ခေါ, ဘန္တေ, တာ ဒေဝတာ မမ စိတ္တမညာယ သဗ္ဗာဝ ဩဒါတာ အဟေသုံ ဩဒါတဝဏ္ဏာ ဩဒါတဝတ္ထာ ဩဒါတာလင်္ကာရာ၊
အထ ခေါ, ဘန္တေ, တာ ဒေဝတာ ဧကာ စ ဂါယိ ဧကာ စ နစ္စိ ဧကာ စ အစ္ဆရံ ဝါဒေသိ၊ သေယျထာပိ နာမ ပဉ္စင်္ဂိကဿ တူရိယဿ သုဝိနီတဿ သုပ္ပဋိပတာဠိတဿ ကုသလေဟိ သုသမန္နာဟတဿ သဒ္ဒေါ ဟောတိ ဝဂ္ဂု စ ရဇနီယော စ ကမနီယော စ ပေမနီယော စ မဒနီယော စ; ဧဝမေဝံ တာသံ ဒေဝတာနံ အလင်္ကာရာနံ သဒ္ဒေါ ဟောတိ ဝဂ္ဂု စ ရဇနီယော စ ကမနီယော စ ပေမနီယော စ မဒနီယော စ၊ အထ ခွါဟံ, ဘန္တေ, ဣန္ဒြိယာနိ ဩက္ခိပိ၊
အထ ခေါ, ဘန္တေ, တာ ဒေဝတာ ‘န ခွယျော အနုရုဒ္ဓေါ သာဒိယတီ'တိ တတ္ထေဝန္တရဓာယိံသု၊ ကတိဟိ နု ခေါ, ဘန္တေ, ဓမ္မေဟိ သမန္နာဂတော မာတုဂါမော ကာယဿ ဘေဒါ ပရံ မရဏာ မနာပကာယိကာနံ ဒေဝါနံ သဟဗျတံ ဥပပဇ္ဇတီ”တိ?
“How many qualities do females have so that—when their body breaks up, after death—they are reborn in company with the Gods of the Lovable Host?”
“အဋ္ဌဟိ ခေါ, အနုရုဒ္ဓ, ဓမ္မေဟိ သမန္နာဂတော မာတုဂါမော ကာယဿ ဘေဒါ ပရံ မရဏာ မနာပကာယိကာနံ ဒေဝါနံ သဟဗျတံ ဥပပဇ္ဇတိ၊ ကတမေဟိ အဋ္ဌဟိ?
“Anuruddha, when they have eight qualities females—when their body breaks up, after death—are reborn in company with the Gods of the Lovable Host. What eight?
ဣဓ, အနုရုဒ္ဓ, မာတုဂါမော ယဿ မာတာပိတရော ဘတ္တုနော ဒေန္တိ အတ္ထကာမာ ဟိတေသိနော အနုကမ္ပကာ အနုကမ္ပံ ဥပါဒါယ တဿ ဟောတိ ပုဗ္ဗုဋ္ဌာယိနီ ပစ္ဆာနိပါတိနီ ကိင်္ကာရပဋိဿာဝိနီ မနာပစာရိနီ ပိယဝါဒိနီ၊
Take the case of a female whose mother and father give her to a husband wanting what’s best for her, out of kindness and compassion. She would get up before him and go to bed after him, and be obliging, behaving nicely and speaking politely.
ယေ တေ ဘတ္တု ဂရုနော ဟောန္တိ—မာတာတိ ဝါ ပိတာတိ ဝါ သမဏဗြာဟ္မဏာတိ ဝါ—တေ သက္ကရောတိ, ဂရုံ ကရောတိ, မာနေတိ, ပူဇေတိ, အဗ္ဘာဂတေ စ အာသနောဒကေန ပဋိပူဇေတိ၊
She honors, respects, esteems, and venerates those her husband respects, such as mother and father, and ascetics and brahmins. And when they arrive she serves them with a seat and water.
ယေ တေ ဘတ္တု အဗ္ဘန္တရာ ကမ္မန္တာ—ဥဏ္ဏာတိ ဝါ ကပ္ပါသာတိ ဝါ—တတ္ထ ဒက္ခာ ဟောတိ အနလသာ တတြုပါယာယ ဝီမံသာယ သမန္နာဂတာ အလံ ကာတုံ အလံ သံဝိဓာတုံ၊
She’s deft and tireless in her husband’s household duties, such as knitting and sewing. She understands how to go about things in order to complete and organize the work.
ယော သော ဘတ္တု အဗ္ဘန္တရော အန္တောဇနော—ဒါသာတိ ဝါ ပေဿာတိ ဝါ ကမ္မကရာတိ ဝါ—တေသံ ကတဉ္စ ကတတော ဇာနာတိ အကတဉ္စ အကတတော ဇာနာတိ, ဂိလာနကာနဉ္စ ဗလာဗလံ ဇာနာတိ ခါဒနီယံ ဘောဇနီယဉ္စဿ ပစ္စံသေန သံဝိဘဇတိ၊
She knows what work her husband’s domestic bondservants, employees, and workers have completed, and what they’ve left incomplete. She knows who is sick, and who is fit or unwell. She distributes to each a fair portion of fresh and cooked foods.
ယံ ဘတ္တု အာဟရတိ ဓနံ ဝါ ဓညံ ဝါ ဇာတရူပံ ဝါ တံ အာရက္ခေန ဂုတ္တိယာ သမ္ပာဒေတိ, တတ္ထ စ ဟောတိ အဓုတ္တီ အထေနီ အသောဏ္ဍီ အဝိနာသိကာ၊
She ensures that any income her husband earns is guarded and protected, whether money, grain, silver, or gold. She doesn’t overspend, steal, waste, or lose it.
ဥပါသိကာ ခေါ ပန ဟောတိ ဗုဒ္ဓံ သရဏံ ဂတာ ဓမ္မံ သရဏံ ဂတာ သင်္ဃံ သရဏံ ဂတာ၊
She’s a lay follower who has gone for refuge to the Buddha, his teaching, and the Saṅgha.
သီလဝတီ ခေါ ပန ဟောတိ—ပါဏာတိပါတာ ပဋိဝိရတာ, အဒိန္နာဒါနာ ပဋိဝိရတာ, ကာမေသုမိစ္ဆာစာရာ ပဋိဝိရတာ, မုသာဝါဒါ ပဋိဝိရတာ, သုရာမေရယမဇ္ဇပမာဒဋ္ဌာနာ ပဋိဝိရတာ၊
She’s ethical. She doesn’t kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, lie, or use alcoholic drinks that cause negligence.
စာဂဝတီ ခေါ ပန ဟောတိ၊ ဝိဂတမလမစ္ဆေရေန စေတသာ အဂါရံ အဇ္ဈာဝသတိ မုတ္တစာဂါ ပယတပါဏိနီ ဝေါဿဂ္ဂရတာ ယာစယောဂါ ဒါနသံဝိဘာဂရတာ၊
She’s generous. She lives at home rid of the stain of stinginess, freely generous, open-handed, loving to let go, committed to charity, loving to give and to share.
ဣမေဟိ ခေါ, အနုရုဒ္ဓ, အဋ္ဌဟိ ဓမ္မေဟိ သမန္နာဂတော မာတုဂါမော ကာယဿ ဘေဒါ ပရံ မရဏာ မနာပကာယိကာနံ ဒေဝါနံ သဟဗျတံ ဥပပဇ္ဇတီတိ၊
When they have these eight qualities females—when their body breaks up, after death—are reborn in company with the Gods of the Lovable Host.
ယော နံ ဘရတိ သဗ္ဗဒါ, နိစ္စံ အာတာပိ ဥဿုကော; တံ သဗ္ဗကာမဒံ ပေါသံ, ဘတ္တာရံ နာတိမညတိ၊
She’d never look down on her husband, who’s always eager to work hard, always looking after her, and bringing whatever she wants.
န စာပိ သောတ္ထိ ဘတ္တာရံ, ဣဿာဝါဒေန ရောသယေ; ဘတ္တု စ ဂရုနော သဗ္ဗေ, ပဋိပူဇေတိ ပဏ္ဍိတာ၊
And a good woman never scolds her husband with jealous words. Being astute, she reveres those respected by her husband.
ဥဋ္ဌာဟိကာ အနလသာ, သင်္ဂဟိတပရိဇ္ဇနာ; ဘတ္တု မနာပံ စရတိ, သမ္ဘတံ အနုရက္ခတိ၊
She gets up early, works tirelessly, and manages the domestic help. She’s lovable to her husband, and preserves his wealth.
ယာ ဧဝံ ဝတ္တတိ နာရီ, ဘတ္တု ဆန္ဒဝသာနုဂါ; မနာပါ နာမ တေ ဒေဝါ, ယတ္ထ သာ ဥပပဇ္ဇတီ”တိ၊
A lady who fulfills these duties according to her husband’s desire, is reborn among the gods called ‘Lovable’.”
