Cannot Endure
“ปญฺจหิ, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต เถโร ภิกฺขุ สพฺรหฺมจารีนํ อปฺปิโย จ โหติ อมนาโป จ อครุ จ อภาวนีโย จฯ กตเมหิ ปญฺจหิ? อกฺขโม โหติ รูปานํ, อกฺขโม สทฺทานํ, อกฺขโม คนฺธานํ, อกฺขโม รสานํ, อกฺขโม โผฏฺฐพฺพานํ—อิเมหิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต เถโร ภิกฺขุ สพฺรหฺมจารีนํ อปฺปิโย จ โหติ อมนาโป จ อครุ จ อภาวนีโย จฯ
“Bhikkhus, a senior bhikkhu with five qualities is unlikable and unlovable to their spiritual companions, not respected or admired. What five? They can’t endure sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and touches. A senior bhikkhu with these five qualities is unlikable and unlovable to their spiritual companions, not respected or admired.
ปญฺจหิ, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต เถโร ภิกฺขุ สพฺรหฺมจารีนํ ปิโย จ โหติ มนาโป จ ครุ จ ภาวนีโย จฯ กตเมหิ ปญฺจหิ? ขโม โหติ รูปานํ, ขโม สทฺทานํ, ขโม คนฺธานํ, ขโม รสานํ, ขโม โผฏฺฐพฺพานํ—อิเมหิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต เถโร ภิกฺขุ สพฺรหฺมจารีนํ ปิโย จ โหติ มนาโป จ ครุ จ ภาวนีโย จา”ติฯ
A senior bhikkhu with five qualities is dear and beloved to their spiritual companions, respected and admired. What five? They can endure sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and touches.
