Sāriputta’s Attainment of Textual Analysis

तत्र खो आयस्मा सारिपुत्तो भिक्खू आमन्तेसि: “आवुसो भिक्खवे”ति।

Tatra kho āyasmā sāriputto bhikkhū āmantesi: “āvuso bhikkhave”ti.

There Sāriputta addressed the bhikkhus: “Friends, bhikkhus!”

“आवुसो”ति खो ते भिक्खू आयस्मतो सारिपुत्तस्स पच्चस्सोसुं। आयस्मा सारिपुत्तो एतदवोच:

“Āvuso”ti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato sāriputtassa paccassosuṁ. Āyasmā sāriputto etadavoca:

“Friend,” they replied. Sāriputta said this:

“अद्धमासूपसम्पन्नेन मे, आवुसो, अत्थपटिसम्भिदा सच्छिकता ओधिसो ब्यञ्जनसो। तमहं अनेकपरियायेन आचिक्खामि देसेमि पञ्ञापेमि पट्ठपेमि विवरामि विभजामि उत्तानीकरोमि। यस्स खो पनस्स कङ्खा वा विमति वा, सो मं पञ्हेन। अहं वेय्याकरणेन सम्मुखीभूतो नो सत्था यो नो धम्मानं सुकुसलो।

“Addhamāsūpasampannena me, āvuso, atthapaṭisambhidā sacchikatā odhiso byañjanaso. Tamahaṁ anekapariyāyena ācikkhāmi desemi paññāpemi paṭṭhapemi vivarāmi vibhajāmi uttānīkaromi. Yassa kho panassa kaṅkhā vā vimati vā, so maṁ pañhena. Ahaṁ veyyākaraṇena sammukhībhūto no satthā yo no dhammānaṁ sukusalo.

“Friends, I realized the textual analysis of the meaning—piece by piece and expression by expression—a fortnight after I ordained. In many ways I explain, teach, assert, establish, clarify, analyze, and reveal it. Whoever has any doubt or uncertainty, let them ask me, I will answer. Our teacher is present, he who is so very skilled in our teachings.
