With Vaṅgīsa
เอกํ สมยํ อายสฺมา วงฺคีโส สาวตฺถิยํ วิหรติ เชตวเน อนาถปิณฺฑิกสฺส อาราเมฯ
At one time Venerable Vaṅgīsa was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.
เตน โข ปน สมเยน อายสฺมา วงฺคีโส อจิรอรหตฺตปฺปตฺโต หุตฺวา วิมุตฺติสุขํ ปฏิสํเวที ตายํ เวลายํ อิมา คาถาโย อภาสิ:
Now at that time Vaṅgīsa had recently attained perfection. While feeling deeply the (bodily) pleasure of freedom, on that occasion he recited these verses:
“กาเวยฺยมตฺตา วิจริมฺห ปุพฺเพ, คามา คามํ ปุรา ปุรํ; อถทฺทสาม สมฺพุทฺธํ, สทฺธา โน อุปปชฺชถฯ
“We used to wander, drunk on poetry, village to village, town to town. Then we saw the Buddha, and faith arose in us.
โส เม ธมฺมมเทเสสิ, ขนฺธายตนธาตุโย; ตสฺสาหํ ธมฺมํ สุตฺวาน, ปพฺพชึ อนคาริยํฯ
He taught me Dhamma: the aggregates, sense fields, and elements. When I heard his teaching I went forth to homelessness.
พหุนฺนํ วต อตฺถาย, โพธึ อชฺฌคมา มุนิ; ภิกฺขูนํ ภิกฺขุนีนญฺจ, เย นิยามคตทฺทสาฯ
It was truly for the benefit of many that the sage achieved awakening—for the monks and for the nuns who see that they’ve reached certainty.
สฺวาคตํ วต เม อาสิ, มม พุทฺธสฺส สนฺติเก; ติโสฺส วิชฺชา อนุปฺปตฺตา, กตํ พุทฺธสฺส สาสนํฯ
It was so welcome for me to be in the presence of the Buddha. I’ve attained the three knowledges, and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions.
ปุพฺเพนิวาสํ ชานามิ, ทิพฺพจกฺขุํ วิโสธิตํ; เตวิชฺโช อิทฺธิปตฺโตมฺหิ, เจโตปริยายโกวิโท”ติฯ
I know my past lives, my clairvoyance is purified, I am master of three knowledges,
ตสฺสุทฺทานํ
นิกฺขนฺตํ อรติ เจว, เปสลา อติมญฺญนา; อานนฺเทน สุภาสิตา, สาริปุตฺตปวารณา; ปโรสหสฺสํ โกณฺฑญฺโญ, โมคฺคลฺลาเนน คคฺครา; วงฺคีเสน ทฺวาทสาติฯ
วงฺคีสสํยุตฺตํ สมตฺตํฯ
