Weaknesses in Training and Effort
“ปญฺจิมานิ, ภิกฺขเว, สิกฺขาทุพฺพลฺยานิฯ กตมานิ ปญฺจ? ปาณาติปาโต …เป… สุราเมรยมชฺชปมาทฏฺฐานํ—อิมานิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจ สิกฺขาทุพฺพลฺยานิฯ
“Bhikkhus, there are these five weaknesses when you’re training. What five? Killing living creatures, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, and using alcoholic drinks that cause negligence. These are the five weaknesses when you’re training.
อิเมสํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจนฺนํ สิกฺขาทุพฺพลฺยานํ ปหานาย จตฺตาโร สมฺมปฺปธานา ภาเวตพฺพาฯ กตเม จตฺตาโร? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ อนุปฺปนฺนานํ ปาปกานํ อกุสลานํ ธมฺมานํ อนุปฺปาทาย ฉนฺทํ ชเนติ วายมติ วีริยํ อารภติ จิตฺตํ ปคฺคณฺหาติ ปทหติ; อุปฺปนฺนานํ ปาปกานํ อกุสลานํ ธมฺมานํ ปหานาย ฉนฺทํ ชเนติ วายมติ วีริยํ อารภติ จิตฺตํ ปคฺคณฺหาติ ปทหติ; อนุปฺปนฺนานํ กุสลานํ ธมฺมานํ อุปฺปาทาย ฉนฺทํ ชเนติ วายมติ วีริยํ อารภติ จิตฺตํ ปคฺคณฺหาติ ปทหติ; อุปฺปนฺนานํ กุสลานํ ธมฺมานํ ฐิติยา อสมฺโมสาย ภิโยฺยภาวาย เวปุลฺลาย ภาวนาย ปาริปูริยา ฉนฺทํ ชเนติ วายมติ วีริยํ อารภติ จิตฺตํ ปคฺคณฺหาติ ปทหติฯ อิเมสํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจนฺนํ สิกฺขาทุพฺพลฺยานํ ปหานาย อิเม จตฺตาโร สมฺมปฺปธานา ภาเวตพฺพา”ติฯ
To give up these five weaknesses in your training you should develop the four right efforts. What four? It’s when a bhikkhu generates enthusiasm, tries, makes an effort, exerts the mind, and strives so that bad, unskillful qualities don’t arise. They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that bad, unskillful qualities that have arisen are given up. They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that skillful qualities arise. They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that skillful qualities that have arisen remain, are not lost, but increase, mature, and are completed by development. To give up these five weaknesses in your training you should develop these four right efforts.”
