Weaknesses in Training and Mindfulness Meditation

“पञ्चिमानि, भिक्खवे, सिक्खादुब्बल्यानि। कतमानि पञ्च? पाणातिपातो, अदिन्नादानं, कामेसुमिच्छाचारो, मुसावादो, सुरामेरयमज्जपमादट्ठानं—इमानि खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्च सिक्खादुब्बल्यानि।

“Pañcimāni, bhikkhave, sikkhādubbalyāni. Katamāni pañca? Pāṇātipāto, adinnādānaṁ, kāmesumicchācāro, musāvādo, surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānaṁ—imāni kho, bhikkhave, pañca sikkhādubbalyāni.

“Bhikkhus, there are these five weaknesses when you’re training. What five? Killing living creatures, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, and using alcoholic drinks that cause negligence. These are the five weaknesses when you’re training.

इमेसं खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चन्नं सिक्खादुब्बल्यानं पहानाय चत्तारो सतिपट्ठाना भावेतब्बा। कतमे चत्तारो? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु काये कायानुपस्सी विहरति आतापी सम्पजानो सतिमा विनेय्य लोके अभिज्झादोमनस्सं; वेदनासु …पे… चित्ते … धम्मेसु धम्मानुपस्सी विहरति आतापी सम्पजानो सतिमा विनेय्य लोके अभिज्झादोमनस्सं। इमेसं खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चन्नं सिक्खादुब्बल्यानं पहानाय इमे चत्तारो सतिपट्ठाना भावेतब्बा”ति।

Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pañcannaṁ sikkhādubbalyānaṁ pahānāya cattāro satipaṭṭhānā bhāvetabbā. Katame cattāro? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ; vedanāsu …pe… citte … dhammesu dhammānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ. Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pañcannaṁ sikkhādubbalyānaṁ pahānāya ime cattāro satipaṭṭhānā bhāvetabbā”ti.

To give up these five weaknesses in your training you should develop the four kinds of mindfulness meditation. What four? It’s when a bhikkhu meditates by watching, again and again, an aspect of the body—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. They meditate watching, again and again, an aspect of feelings … They meditate watching, again and again, an aspect of the mind … They meditate watching, again and again, an aspect of principles—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. To give up those five weaknesses in your training you should develop these four kinds of mindfulness meditation.”
