With Something Left Over
ဧကံ သမယံ ဘဂဝါ သာဝတ္ထိယံ ဝိဟရတိ ဇေတဝနေ အနာထပိဏ္ဍိကဿ အာရာမေ၊
At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.
အထ ခေါ အာယသ္မာ သာရိပုတ္တော ပုဗ္ဗဏှသမယံ နိဝါသေတွာ ပတ္တစီဝရမာဒါယ သာဝတ္ထိံ ပိဏ္ဍာယ ပါဝိသိ၊ အထ ခေါ အာယသ္မတော သာရိပုတ္တဿ ဧတဒဟောသိ: “အတိပ္ပဂေါ ခေါ တာဝ သာဝတ္ထိယံ ပိဏ္ဍာယ စရိတုံ, ယန္နူနာဟံ ယေန အညတိတ္ထိယာနံ ပရိဗ္ဗာဇကာနံ အာရာမော တေနုပသင်္ကမေယျန်”တိ၊ အထ ခေါ အာယသ္မာ သာရိပုတ္တော ယေန အညတိတ္ထိယာနံ ပရိဗ္ဗာဇကာနံ အာရာမော တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ တေဟိ အညတိတ္ထိယေဟိ ပရိဗ္ဗာဇကေဟိ သဒ္ဓိံ သမ္မောဒိ၊ သမ္မောဒနီယံ ကထံ သာရဏီယံ ဝီတိသာရေတွာ ဧကမန္တံ နိသီဒိ၊
Then Venerable Sāriputta robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, entered Sāvatthī for alms. Then it occurred to him, “It’s too early to wander for alms in Sāvatthī. Why don’t I go to the monastery of the wanderers of other religions?” Then he went to the monastery of the wanderers of other religions, and exchanged greetings with the wanderers there. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side.
တေန ခေါ ပန သမယေန တေသံ အညတိတ္ထိယာနံ ပရိဗ္ဗာဇကာနံ သန္နိသိန္နာနံ သန္နိပတိတာနံ အယမန္တရာကထာ ဥဒပါဒိ:
Now at that time while those wanderers of other religions were sitting together this discussion came up among them:
“ယော ဟိ ကောစိ, အာဝုသော, သော်ပါဒိသေသော ကာလံ ကရောတိ, သဗ္ဗော သော အပရိမုတ္တော နိရယာ အပရိမုတ္တော တိရစ္ဆာနယောနိယာ အပရိမုတ္တော ပေတ္တိဝိသယာ အပရိမုတ္တော အပါယဒုဂ္ဂတိဝိနိပါတာ”တိ၊
“Friends, no-one who dies with something left over is exempt from hell, the animal realm, or the ghost realm. They’re not exempt from places of loss, bad places, the underworld.”
အထ ခေါ အာယသ္မာ သာရိပုတ္တော တေသံ အညတိတ္ထိယာနံ ပရိဗ္ဗာဇကာနံ ဘာသိတံ နေဝ အဘိနန္ဒိ နပ္ပဋိက္ကောသိ၊ အနဘိနန္ဒိတွာ အပ္ပဋိက္ကောသိတွာ ဥဋ္ဌာယာသနာ ပက္ကာမိ: “ဘဂဝတော သန္တိကေ ဧတဿ ဘာသိတဿ အတ္ထံ အာဇာနိဿာမီ”တိ၊
Sāriputta neither approved nor dismissed that statement of the wanderers of other religions. He got up from his seat, thinking, “I will learn the meaning of this statement from the Buddha himself.”
အထ ခေါ အာယသ္မာ သာရိပုတ္တော သာဝတ္ထိယံ ပိဏ္ဍာယ စရိတွာ ပစ္ဆာဘတ္တံ ပိဏ္ဍပါတပဋိက္ကန္တော ယေန ဘဂဝါ တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ဘဂဝန္တံ အဘိဝါဒေတွာ ဧကမန္တံ နိသီဒိ၊ ဧကမန္တံ နိသိန္နော ခေါ အာယသ္မာ သာရိပုတ္တော ဘဂဝန္တံ ဧတဒဝေါစ:
Then Sāriputta wandered for alms in Sāvatthī. After the meal, on his return from almsround, he went to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and told him what had happened.
“ဣဓာဟံ, ဘန္တေ, ပုဗ္ဗဏှသမယံ နိဝါသေတွာ ပတ္တစီဝရမာဒါယ သာဝတ္ထိံ ပိဏ္ဍာယ ပါဝိသိံ၊ တဿ မယှံ, ဘန္တေ, ဧတဒဟောသိ: ‘အတိပ္ပဂေါ ခေါ တာဝ သာဝတ္ထိယံ ပိဏ္ဍာယ စရိတုံ; ယန္နူနာဟံ ယေန အညတိတ္ထိယာနံ ပရိဗ္ဗာဇကာနံ အာရာမော တေနုပသင်္ကမေယျန်'တိ၊ အထ ခေါ အဟံ, ဘန္တေ, ယေန အညတိတ္ထိယာနံ ပရိဗ္ဗာဇကာနံ အာရာမော တေနုပသင်္ကမိံ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ တေဟိ အညတိတ္ထိယေဟိ ပရိဗ္ဗာဇကေဟိ သဒ္ဓိံ သမ္မောဒိံ၊ သမ္မောဒနီယံ ကထံ သာရဏီယံ ဝီတိသာရေတွာ ဧကမန္တံ နိသီဒိံ၊ တေန ခေါ ပန သမယေန တေသံ အညတိတ္ထိယာနံ ပရိဗ္ဗာဇကာနံ သန္နိသိန္နာနံ သန္နိပတိတာနံ အယမန္တရာကထာ ဥဒပါဒိ: ‘ယော ဟိ ကောစိ, အာဝုသော, သော်ပါဒိသေသော ကာလံ ကရောတိ, သဗ္ဗော သော အပရိမုတ္တော နိရယာ အပရိမုတ္တော တိရစ္ဆာနယောနိယာ အပရိမုတ္တော ပေတ္တိဝိသယာ အပရိမုတ္တော အပါယဒုဂ္ဂတိဝိနိပါတာ'တိ၊ အထ ခေါ အဟံ, ဘန္တေ, တေသံ အညတိတ္ထိယာနံ ပရိဗ္ဗာဇကာနံ ဘာသိတံ နေဝ အဘိနန္ဒိံ နပ္ပဋိက္ကောသိံ၊ အနဘိနန္ဒိတွာ အပ္ပဋိက္ကောသိတွာ ဥဋ္ဌာယာသနာ ပက္ကမိံ: ‘ဘဂဝတော သန္တိကေ ဧတဿ ဘာသိတဿ အတ္ထံ အာဇာနိဿာမီ'”တိ၊
“ကေ စ, သာရိပုတ္တ, အညတိတ္ထိယာ ပရိဗ္ဗာဇကာ ဗာလာ အဗျတ္တာ, ကေ စ သော်ပါဒိသေသံ ဝါ ‘သော်ပါဒိသေသော'တိ ဇာနိဿန္တိ, အနုပါဒိသေသံ ဝါ ‘အနုပါဒိသေသော'တိ ဇာနိဿန္တိ၊
“Sāriputta, these foolish, incompetent wanderers following other religions: who are they to know whether someone has something left over or not?
နဝယိမေ, သာရိပုတ္တ, ပုဂ္ဂလာ သော်ပါဒိသေသာ ကာလံ ကုရုမာနာ ပရိမုတ္တာ နိရယာ ပရိမုတ္တာ တိရစ္ဆာနယောနိယာ ပရိမုတ္တာ ပေတ္တိဝိသယာ ပရိမုတ္တာ အပါယဒုဂ္ဂတိဝိနိပါတာ၊ ကတမေ နဝ?
There are these nine people who, dying with something left over, are exempt from hell, the animal realm, and the ghost realm. They’re exempt from places of loss, bad places, the underworld. What nine?
ဣဓ, သာရိပုတ္တ, ဧကစ္စော ပုဂ္ဂလော သီလေသု ပရိပူရကာရီ ဟောတိ, သမာဓိသ္မိံ ပရိပူရကာရီ, ပညာယ မတ္တသော ကာရီ၊ သော ပဉ္စန္နံ ဩရမ္ဘာဂိယာနံ သံယောဇနာနံ ပရိက္ခယာ အန္တရာပရိနိဗ္ဗာယီ ဟောတိ၊ အယံ, သာရိပုတ္တ, ပဌမော ပုဂ္ဂလော သော်ပါဒိသေသော ကာလံ ကုရုမာနော ပရိမုတ္တော နိရယာ ပရိမုတ္တော တိရစ္ဆာနယောနိယာ ပရိမုတ္တော ပေတ္တိဝိသယာ ပရိမုတ္တော အပါယဒုဂ္ဂတိဝိနိပါတာ၊
There’s a person who has fulfilled ethics and samādhi, but has limited wisdom. With the ending of the five lower fetters they’re extinguished between one life and the next. This is the first person …

These are the nine people who, dying with something left over, are exempt from hell, the animal realm, and the ghost realm. They’re exempt from places of loss, bad places, the underworld.
န တာဝါယံ, သာရိပုတ္တ, ဓမ္မပရိယာယော ပဋိဘာသိ ဘိက္ခူနံ ဘိက္ခုနီနံ ဥပါသကာနံ ဥပါသိကာနံ၊ တံ ကိဿ ဟေတု? မာယိမံ ဓမ္မပရိယာယံ သုတွာ ပမာဒံ အာဟရိံသူတိ၊ အပိ စ မယာ, သာရိပုတ္တ, ဓမ္မပရိယာယော ပဉှာဓိပ္ပါယေန ဘာသိတော”တိ၊
Up until now, Sāriputta, I have not felt the need to give this exposition of the teaching to the monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen. Why is that? For I didn’t want those who heard it to introduce negligence. However, I have spoken it in order to answer your question.”
