Overflowing Merit
“ปญฺจิเม, ภิกฺขเว, ปุญฺญาภิสนฺทา กุสลาภิสนฺทา สุขสฺสาหารา โสวคฺคิกา สุขวิปากา สคฺคสํวตฺตนิกา อิฏฺฐาย กนฺตาย มนาปาย หิตาย สุขาย สํวตฺตนฺติฯ
“Bhikkhus, there are these five kinds of overflowing merit, overflowing goodness. They nurture happiness and are conducive to heaven, ripening in happiness and leading to heaven. They lead to what is likable, desirable, agreeable, to welfare and happiness.
กตเม ปญฺจ? ยสฺส, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ จีวรํ ปริภุญฺชมาโน อปฺปมาณํ เจโตสมาธึ อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรติ, อปฺปมาโณ ตสฺส ปุญฺญาภิสนฺโท กุสลาภิสนฺโท สุขสฺสาหาโร โสวคฺคิโก สุขวิปาโก สคฺคสํวตฺตนิโก อิฏฺฐาย กนฺตาย มนาปาย หิตาย สุขาย สํวตฺตติฯ ยสฺส, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ ปิณฺฑปาตํ ปริภุญฺชมาโน …เป… ยสฺส, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ วิหารํ ปริภุญฺชมาโน …เป… ยสฺส, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ มญฺจปีฐํ ปริภุญฺชมาโน …เป…ฯ ยสฺส, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ คิลานปฺปจฺจยเภสชฺชปริกฺขารํ ปริภุญฺชมาโน อปฺปมาณํ เจโตสมาธึ อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรติ, อปฺปมาโณ ตสฺส ปุญฺญาภิสนฺโท กุสลาภิสนฺโท สุขสฺสาหาโร โสวคฺคิโก สุขวิปาโก สคฺคสํวตฺตนิโก อิฏฺฐาย กนฺตาย มนาปาย หิตาย สุขาย สํวตฺตติฯ
What five? When a bhikkhu enters and remains in a limitless samādhi of the mind while using a robe … almsfood … lodging … bed and chair … medicines and supplies for the sick, the overflowing of merit for the donor is limitless …
อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจ ปุญฺญาภิสนฺทา กุสลาภิสนฺทา สุขสฺสาหารา โสวคฺคิกา สุขวิปากา สคฺคสํวตฺตนิกา อิฏฺฐาย กนฺตาย มนาปาย หิตาย สุขาย สํวตฺตนฺติฯ
These are the five kinds of overflowing merit, overflowing goodness. They nurture happiness, and are conducive to heaven, ripening in happiness, and leading to heaven. They lead to what is likable, desirable, agreeable, to welfare and happiness.
อิเมหิ จ ปน, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจหิ ปุญฺญาภิสนฺเทหิ กุสลาภิสนฺเทหิ สมนฺนาคตสฺส อริยสาวกสฺส น สุกรํ ปุญฺญสฺส ปมาณํ คเหตุํ: ‘เอตฺตโก ปุญฺญาภิสนฺโท กุสลาภิสนฺโท สุขสฺสาหาโร โสวคฺคิโก สุขวิปาโก สคฺคสํวตฺตนิโก อิฏฺฐาย กนฺตาย มนาปาย หิตาย สุขาย สํวตฺตตี'ติฯ อถ โข อสงฺเขโยฺย อปฺปเมโยฺย มหาปุญฺญกฺขนฺโธเตฺวว สงฺขํ คจฺฉติฯ
When a noble disciple has these five kinds of overflowing merit and goodness, it’s not easy to grasp how much merit they have by saying that this is the extent of their overflowing merit … that leads to happiness. It’s simply reckoned as an incalculable, immeasurable, great mass of merit.
เสยฺยถาปิ, ภิกฺขเว, มหาสมุทฺเท น สุกรํ อุทกสฺส ปมาณํ คเหตุํ: ‘เอตฺตกานิ อุทกาฬฺหกานีติ วา เอตฺตกานิ อุทกาฬฺหกสตานีติ วา เอตฺตกานิ อุทกาฬฺหกสหสฺสานีติ วา เอตฺตกานิ อุทกาฬฺหกสตสหสฺสานีติ วา; อถ โข อสงฺเขโยฺย อปฺปเมโยฺย มหาอุทกกฺขนฺโธเตฺวว สงฺขํ คจฺฉติ'ฯ
It’s like trying to grasp how much water is in the ocean. It’s not easy to say: ‘This is how many gallons, how many hundreds, thousands, hundreds of thousands of gallons there are.’ It’s simply reckoned as an incalculable, immeasurable, great mass of water.
เอวเมวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, อิเมหิ ปญฺจหิ ปุญฺญาภิสนฺเทหิ กุสลาภิสนฺเทหิ สมนฺนาคตสฺส อริยสาวกสฺส น สุกรํ ปุญฺญสฺส ปมาณํ คเหตุํ: ‘เอตฺตโก ปุญฺญาภิสนฺโท กุสลาภิสนฺโท สุขสฺสาหาโร โสวคฺคิโก สุขวิปาโก สคฺคสํวตฺตนิโก อิฏฺฐาย กนฺตาย มนาปาย หิตาย สุขาย สํวตฺตตี'ติฯ อถ โข อสงฺเขโยฺย อปฺปเมโยฺย มหาปุญฺญกฺขนฺโธเตฺวว สงฺขํ คจฺฉตีติฯ
In the same way, when a noble disciple has these five kinds of overflowing merit and goodness, it’s not easy to grasp how much merit they have: ‘This is how much this overflowing merit … leads to happiness.’ It’s simply reckoned as an incalculable, immeasurable, great mass of merit.
มโหทธึ อปริมิตํ มหาสรํ, พหุเภรวํ รตฺนคณานมาลยํ; นชฺโช ยถา นรคณสงฺฆเสวิตา, ปุถู สวนฺตี อุปยนฺติ สาครํฯ
Hosts of people use the rivers, and though the rivers are many, all reach the great deep, the boundless ocean, the cruel sea that’s home to precious gems.
เอวํ นรํ อนฺนทปานวตฺถทํ, เสยฺยานิสชฺชตฺถรณสฺส ทายกํ; ปุญฺญสฺส ธารา อุปยนฺติ ปณฺฑิตํ, นชฺโช ยถา วาริวหาว สาครนฺ”ติฯ
So too, when a person gives food, drink, and clothes; and they’re a giver of beds, seats, and mats—the streams of merit reach that astute person, as the rivers bring their waters to the sea.”
