Great Sal Trees
“หิมวนฺตํ, ภิกฺขเว, ปพฺพตราชํ นิสฺสาย มหาสาลา ปญฺจหิ วฑฺฒีหิ วฑฺฒนฺติฯ กตมาหิ ปญฺจหิ? สาขาปตฺตปลาเสน วฑฺฒนฺติ; ตเจน วฑฺฒนฺติ; ปปฏิกาย วฑฺฒนฺติ; เผคฺคุนา วฑฺฒนฺติ; สาเรน วฑฺฒนฺติฯ หิมวนฺตํ, ภิกฺขเว, ปพฺพตราชํ นิสฺสาย มหาสาลา อิมาหิ ปญฺจหิ วฑฺฒีหิ วฑฺฒนฺติฯ
“Bhikkhus, great sal trees grow in five ways supported by the Himalayas, the king of mountains. What five? The branches, leaves, and foliage; the bark; the shoots; the softwood; and the hardwood. Great sal trees grow in these five ways supported by the Himalayas, the king of mountains.
เอวเมวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, สทฺธํ กุลปุตฺตํ นิสฺสาย อนฺโตชโน ปญฺจหิ วฑฺฒีหิ วฑฺฒติฯ กตมาหิ ปญฺจหิ? สทฺธาย วฑฺฒติ; สีเลน วฑฺฒติ; สุเตน วฑฺฒติ; จาเคน วฑฺฒติ; ปญฺญาย วฑฺฒติฯ สทฺธํ, ภิกฺขเว, กุลปุตฺตํ นิสฺสาย อนฺโตชโน อิมาหิ ปญฺจหิ วฑฺฒีหิ วฑฺฒตีติฯ
In the same way, a family grows in five ways supported by a family head with faith. What five? Faith, ethics, learning, generosity, and wisdom. A family grows in these five ways supported by a family head with faith.
ยถา หิ ปพฺพโต เสโล, อรญฺญสฺมึ พฺรหาวเน; ตํ รุกฺขา อุปนิสฺสาย, วฑฺฒนฺเต เต วนปฺปตีฯ
Supported by the mountain crags in the wilds, the formidable forest, the tree grows to become lord of the forest.
ตเถว สีลสมฺปนฺนํ, สทฺธํ กุลปุตฺตํ อิมํ; อุปนิสฺสาย วฑฺฒนฺติ, ปุตฺตทารา จ พนฺธวา; อมจฺจา ญาติสงฺฆา จ, เย จสฺส อนุชีวิโนฯ
So too, when the family head is ethical and faithful, supported by them, they grow: children, partners, and kin, colleagues, relatives, and those dependent for their livelihood.
ตฺยสฺส สีลวโต สีลํ, จาคํ สุจริตานิ จ; ปสฺสมานานุกุพฺพนฺติ, เย ภวนฺติ วิจกฺขณาฯ
Seeing the ethical conduct of the virtuous, the generosity and good deeds, those who see clearly do likewise.
อิธ ธมฺมํ จริตฺวาน, มคฺคํ สุคติคามินํ; นนฺทิโน เทวโลกสฺมึ, โมทนฺติ กามกามิโน”ติฯ
Having practiced the teaching here, the path that goes to a good place, they delight in the heavenly realm, enjoying all the pleasures they desire.”

สุมนา จุนฺที อุคฺคโห, สีโห ทานานิสํสโก; กาลโภชนสทฺธา จ, ปุตฺตสาเลหิ เต ทสาติฯ
