กาลทานสุตฺต
Timely Gifts
“ปญฺจิมานิ, ภิกฺขเว, กาลทานานิฯ กตมานิ ปญฺจ? อาคนฺตุกสฺส ทานํ เทติ; คมิกสฺส ทานํ เทติ; คิลานสฺส ทานํ เทติ; ทุพฺภิกฺเข ทานํ เทติ; ยานิ ตานิ นวสสฺสานิ นวผลานิ ตานิ ปฐมํ สีลวนฺเตสุ ปติฏฺฐาเปติฯ อิมานิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจ กาลทานานีติฯ
“Bhikkhus, there are these five timely gifts. What five? A gift to a visitor. A gift to someone setting out on a journey. A gift to someone who is sick. A gift at a time of famine. Presenting the freshly harvested grains and fruits first to those who are ethical. These are the five timely gifts.
กาเล ททนฺติ สปฺปญฺญา, วทญฺญู วีตมจฺฉรา; กาเลน ทินฺนํ อริเยสุ, อุชุภูเตสุ ตาทิสุฯ
The wise give at the right time, being bountiful and rid of stinginess. A religious donation at the right time to the noble ones, upright and poised,
วิปฺปสนฺนมนา ตสฺส, วิปุลา โหติ ทกฺขิณา; เย ตตฺถ อนุโมทนฺติ, เวยฺยาวจฺจํ กโรนฺติ วา; น เตน ทกฺขิณา อูนา, เตปิ ปุญฺญสฺส ภาคิโนฯ
given with a clear and confident mind, is indeed abundant. Those who rejoice at that, or do other services, don’t miss out on the offering; they too have a share in the merit.
ตสฺมา ทเท อปฺปฏิวานจิตฺโต, ยตฺถ ทินฺนํ มหปฺผลํ; ปุญฺญานิ ปรโลกสฺมึ, ปติฏฺฐา โหนฺติ ปาณินนฺ”ติฯ
So you should give without holding back, where a gift is very fruitful. The good deeds of sentient beings support them in the next world.”
