At Sāvatthī.
“อฏฺฐิเม, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺมา ภาวิตา พหุลีกตา อนุปฺปนฺนา อุปฺปชฺชนฺติ, นาญฺญตฺร ตถาคตสฺส ปาตุภาวา อรหโต สมฺมาสมฺพุทฺธสฺสฯ กตเม อฏฺฐ? เสยฺยถิทํ—สมฺมาทิฏฺฐิ …เป… สมฺมาสมาธิฯ อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, อฏฺฐ ธมฺมา ภาวิตา พหุลีกตา อนุปฺปนฺนา อุปฺปชฺชนฺติ, นาญฺญตฺร ตถาคตสฺส ปาตุภาวา อรหโต สมฺมาสมฺพุทฺธสฺสา”ติฯ
“Bhikkhus, these eight things don’t arise to be developed and cultivated except when a Realized One, a perfected one, a fully awakened Buddha has appeared. What eight? They are: right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right samādhi. These eight things don’t arise to be developed and cultivated except when a Realized One, a perfected one, a fully awakened Buddha has appeared.”
