16. The True Teaching
ปฐมสมฺมตฺตนิยามสุตฺต
Surety in the Right Way (1st)
“ปญฺจหิ, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต สุณนฺโตปิ สทฺธมฺมํ อภพฺโพ นิยามํ โอกฺกมิตุํ กุสเลสุ ธมฺเมสุ สมฺมตฺตํฯ กตเมหิ ปญฺจหิ? กถํ ปริโภติ, กถิกํ ปริโภติ, อตฺตานํ ปริโภติ, วิกฺขิตฺตจิตฺโต ธมฺมํ สุณาติ, อเนกคฺคจิตฺโต อโยนิโส จ มนสิ กโรติฯ อิเมหิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต สุณนฺโตปิ สทฺธมฺมํ อภพฺโพ นิยามํ โอกฺกมิตุํ กุสเลสุ ธมฺเมสุ สมฺมตฺตํฯ
“Bhikkhus, someone with five qualities is unable to enter the sure path with regards to skillful qualities even when listening to the true teaching. What five? They disparage the talk, the speaker, or themselves. They listen with scattered and scattered mind. They apply the mind irrationally. Someone with these five qualities is unable to enter the sure path with regards to skillful qualities, even when listening to the true teaching.
ปญฺจหิ, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต สุณนฺโต สทฺธมฺมํ ภพฺโพ นิยามํ โอกฺกมิตุํ กุสเลสุ ธมฺเมสุ สมฺมตฺตํฯ กตเมหิ ปญฺจหิ? น กถํ ปริโภติ, น กถิกํ ปริโภติ, น อตฺตานํ ปริโภติ, อวิกฺขิตฺตจิตฺโต ธมฺมํ สุณาติ, เอกคฺคจิตฺโต โยนิโส จ มนสิ กโรติฯ อิเมหิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต สุณนฺโต สทฺธมฺมํ ภพฺโพ นิยามํ โอกฺกมิตุํ กุสเลสุ ธมฺเมสุ สมฺมตฺตนฺ”ติฯ
Someone with five qualities is able to enter the sure path with regards to skillful qualities when listening to the true teaching. What five? They don’t disparage the talk, the speaker, or themselves. They listen with unscattered and unified mind. They apply the mind rationally. Someone with these five qualities is able to enter the sure path with regards to skillful qualities when listening to the true teaching.”
