สารนฺททสุตฺต
At Sārandada
เอกํ สมยํ ภควา เวสาลิยํ วิหรติ มหาวเน กูฏาคารสาลายํฯ
At one time the Buddha was staying near Vesālī, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof.
อถ โข ภควา ปุพฺพณฺหสมยํ นิวาเสตฺวา ปตฺตจีวรมาทาย เวสาลึ ปิณฺฑาย ปาวิสิฯ
Then the Buddha robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, entered Vesālī for alms.
เตน โข ปน สมเยน ปญฺจมตฺตานํ ลิจฺฉวิสตานํ สารนฺทเท เจติเย สนฺนิสินฺนานํ สนฺนิปติตานํ อยมนฺตรากถา อุทปาทิ: “ปญฺจนฺนํ รตนานํ ปาตุภาโว ทุลฺลโภ โลกสฺมึฯ กตเมสํ ปญฺจนฺนํ? หตฺถิรตนสฺส ปาตุภาโว ทุลฺลโภ โลกสฺมึ, อสฺสรตนสฺส ปาตุภาโว ทุลฺลโภ โลกสฺมึ, มณิรตนสฺส ปาตุภาโว ทุลฺลโภ โลกสฺมึ, อิตฺถิรตนสฺส ปาตุภาโว ทุลฺลโภ โลกสฺมึ, คหปติรตนสฺส ปาตุภาโว ทุลฺลโภ โลกสฺมึฯ อิเมสํ ปญฺจนฺนํ รตนานํ ปาตุภาโว ทุลฺลโภ โลกสฺมินฺ”ติฯ
Now at that time around five hundred Licchavis were sitting together at the Sārandada shrine, and this discussion came up among them, “The appearance of five treasures is rare in the world. What five? The elephant-treasure, the horse-treasure, the jewel-treasure, the woman-treasure, and the householder-treasure. The appearance of these five treasures is rare in the world.”
อถ โข เต ลิจฺฉวี มคฺเค ปุริสํ ฐเปสุํ: “ยทา ตฺวํ, อมฺโภ ปุริส, ปเสฺสยฺยาสิ ภควนฺตํ, อถ อมฺหากํ อาโรเจยฺยาสี”ติฯ
Then those Licchavis sent a man out on to the road, saying, “Mister, please tell us when you see the Buddha.”
อทฺทสา โข โส ปุริโส ภควนฺตํ ทูรโตว อาคจฺฉนฺตํ; ทิสฺวาน เยน เต ลิจฺฉวี เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา เต ลิจฺฉวี เอตทโวจ: “อยํ โส, ภนฺเต, ภควา คจฺฉติ อรหํ สมฺมาสมฺพุทฺโธ; ยสฺสทานิ กาลํ มญฺญถา”ติฯ
That man saw the Buddha coming off in the distance. He went to the Licchavis and said, “Sirs, the Blessed One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha is coming. Please go at your convenience.”
อถ โข เต ลิจฺฉวี เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมึสุ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ อฏฺฐํสุฯ เอกมนฺตํ ฐิตา โข เต ลิจฺฉวี ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจุํ: “สาธุ, ภนฺเต, เยน สารนฺททํ เจติยํ เตนุปสงฺกมตุ อนุกมฺปํ อุปาทายา”ติฯ อธิวาเสสิ ภควา ตุณฺหีภาเวนฯ
Then those Licchavis went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, and said to him, “Please go to the Sārandada shrine, out of compassion.” The Buddha consented with silence.
อถ โข ภควา เยน สารนฺททํ เจติยํ เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ปญฺญตฺเต อาสเน นิสีทิฯ นิสชฺช โข ภควา เต ลิจฺฉวี เอตทโวจ: “กาย นุตฺถ, ลิจฺฉวี, เอตรหิ กถาย สนฺนิสินฺนา, กา จ ปน โว อนฺตรากถา วิปฺปกตา”ติ?
Then the Buddha went up to the Sārandada shrine, where he sat on the seat spread out, and said to the Licchavis, “Licchavis, what were you sitting talking about just now? What conversation was left unfinished?”
“อิธ, ภนฺเต, อมฺหากํ สนฺนิสินฺนานํ สนฺนิปติตานํ อยมนฺตรากถา อุทปาทิ: ‘ปญฺจนฺนํ รตนานํ ปาตุภาโว ทุลฺลโภ โลกสฺมึฯ กตเมสํ ปญฺจนฺนํ? หตฺถิรตนสฺส ปาตุภาโว ทุลฺลโภ โลกสฺมึ, อสฺสรตนสฺส ปาตุภาโว ทุลฺลโภ โลกสฺมึ, มณิรตนสฺส ปาตุภาโว ทุลฺลโภ โลกสฺมึ, อิตฺถิรตนสฺส ปาตุภาโว ทุลฺลโภ โลกสฺมึ, คหปติรตนสฺส ปาตุภาโว ทุลฺลโภ โลกสฺมึฯ อิเมสํ ปญฺจนฺนํ รตนานํ ปาตุภาโว ทุลฺลโภ โลกสฺมินฺ'”ติฯ
“Well, Master Gotama, this discussion came up among us while we were sitting together: ‘The appearance of five treasures is rare in the world. …’”
“กามาธิมุตฺตานํ วต โภ ลิจฺฉวีนํ กามํเยว อารพฺภ อนฺตรากถา อุทปาทิฯ ปญฺจนฺนํ, ลิจฺฉวี, รตนานํ ปาตุภาโว ทุลฺลโภ โลกสฺมึฯ กตเมสํ ปญฺจนฺนํ?
“You Licchavis are so fixated on sensual pleasures, that’s the only discussion that came up! Licchavis, the appearance of five treasures is rare in the world. What five?
ตถาคตสฺส อรหโต สมฺมาสมฺพุทฺธสฺส ปาตุภาโว ทุลฺลโภ โลกสฺมึ,
The appearance of a Realized One, a perfected one, a fully awakened Buddha.
ตถาคตปฺปเวทิตสฺส ธมฺมวินยสฺส เทเสตา ปุคฺคโล ทุลฺลโภ โลกสฺมึ,
A person who explains the teaching and training proclaimed by a Realized One.
ตถาคตปฺปเวทิตสฺส ธมฺมวินยสฺส เทสิตสฺส วิญฺญาตา ปุคฺคโล ทุลฺลโภ โลกสฺมึ,
A person who understands the teaching and training proclaimed by a Realized One.
ตถาคตปฺปเวทิตสฺส ธมฺมวินยสฺส เทสิตสฺส วิญฺญาตา ธมฺมานุธมฺมปฺปฏิปนฺโน ปุคฺคโล ทุลฺลโภ โลกสฺมึ,
A person who practices in line with the teaching.
กตญฺญู กตเวที ปุคฺคโล ทุลฺลโภ โลกสฺมึฯ
A person who is grateful and thankful.
อิเมสํ โข, ลิจฺฉวี, ปญฺจนฺนํ รตนานํ ปาตุภาโว ทุลฺลโภ โลกสฺมินฺ”ติฯ
The appearance of these five treasures is rare in the world.”
