Should Be Completely Understood
สาวตฺถินิทานํฯ
At Sāvatthī.
“ปริญฺเญเยฺย จ, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺเม เทเสสฺสามิ ปริญฺญญฺจ ปริญฺญาตาวิญฺจ ปุคฺคลํฯ ตํ สุณาถฯ
“Bhikkhus, I will teach you the things that should be completely understood, complete understanding, and the person who has completely understood. Listen …
กตเม จ, ภิกฺขเว, ปริญฺเญยฺยา ธมฺมา? รูปํ, ภิกฺขเว, ปริญฺเญโยฺย ธมฺโมฯ เวทนา …เป… สญฺญา … สงฺขารา … วิญฺญาณํ ปริญฺเญโยฺย ธมฺโมฯ อิเม วุจฺจนฺติ, ภิกฺขเว, ปริญฺเญยฺยา ธมฺมาฯ
And what things should be completely understood? Form, feeling, perception, functioning patterns, and consciousness. These are called the things that should be completely understood.
กตมา จ, ภิกฺขเว, ปริญฺญา? ราคกฺขโย, โทสกฺขโย, โมหกฺขโย—อยํ วุจฺจติ, ภิกฺขเว, ปริญฺญาฯ
And what is complete understanding? The ending of greed, hate, and delusion. This is called complete understanding.
กตโม จ, ภิกฺขเว, ปริญฺญาตาวี ปุคฺคโล? อรหาติสฺส วจนียํฯ ยฺวายํ อายสฺมา เอวํนาโม เอวงฺโคตฺโต—อยํ วุจฺจติ, ภิกฺขเว, ปริญฺญาตาวี ปุคฺคโล”ติฯ
And what is the person who has completely understood? It should be said: a perfected one, the venerable of such and such name and clan. This is called the person who has completely understood.”
