If There Was No
สาวตฺถิยํ วิหรติฯ
At Sāvatthī.
“โน เจทํ, ภิกฺขเว, ปถวีธาตุยา อสฺสาโท อภวิสฺส, นยิทํ สตฺตา ปถวีธาตุยา สารชฺเชยฺยุํฯ ยสฺมา จ โข, ภิกฺขเว, อตฺถิ ปถวีธาตุยา อสฺสาโท, ตสฺมา สตฺตา ปถวีธาตุยา สารชฺชนฺติฯ โน เจทํ, ภิกฺขเว, ปถวีธาตุยา อาทีนโว อภวิสฺส, นยิทํ สตฺตา ปถวีธาตุยา นิพฺพินฺเทยฺยุํฯ ยสฺมา จ โข, ภิกฺขเว, อตฺถิ ปถวีธาตุยา อาทีนโว, ตสฺมา สตฺตา ปถวีธาตุยา นิพฺพินฺทนฺติฯ โน เจทํ, ภิกฺขเว, ปถวีธาตุยา นิสฺสรณํ อภวิสฺส, นยิทํ สตฺตา ปถวีธาตุยา นิสฺสเรยฺยุํฯ ยสฺมา จ โข, ภิกฺขเว, อตฺถิ ปถวีธาตุยา นิสฺสรณํ, ตสฺมา สตฺตา ปถวีธาตุยา นิสฺสรนฺติฯ
“Bhikkhus, if there were no gratification in the earth element, sentient beings wouldn’t be aroused by it. But since there is gratification in the earth element, sentient beings are aroused by it. If the earth element had no drawback, sentient beings wouldn’t grow disillusioned with it. But since the earth element has a drawback, sentient beings do grow disillusioned with it. If there were no escape from the earth element, sentient beings wouldn’t escape from it. But since there is an escape from the earth element, sentient beings do escape from it.
โน เจทํ, ภิกฺขเว, อาโปธาตุยา อสฺสาโท อภวิสฺส …เป… โน เจทํ, ภิกฺขเว, เตโชธาตุยา …เป… โน เจทํ, ภิกฺขเว, วาโยธาตุยา อสฺสาโท อภวิสฺส, นยิทํ สตฺตา วาโยธาตุยา สารชฺเชยฺยุํฯ ยสฺมา จ โข, ภิกฺขเว, อตฺถิ วาโยธาตุยา อสฺสาโท, ตสฺมา สตฺตา วาโยธาตุยา สารชฺชนฺติฯ โน เจทํ, ภิกฺขเว, วาโยธาตุยา อาทีนโว อภวิสฺส, นยิทํ สตฺตา วาโยธาตุยา นิพฺพินฺเทยฺยุํฯ ยสฺมา จ โข, ภิกฺขเว, อตฺถิ วาโยธาตุยา อาทีนโว, ตสฺมา สตฺตา วาโยธาตุยา นิพฺพินฺทนฺติฯ โน เจทํ, ภิกฺขเว, วาโยธาตุยา นิสฺสรณํ อภวิสฺส, นยิทํ สตฺตา วาโยธาตุยา นิสฺสเรยฺยุํฯ ยสฺมา จ โข, ภิกฺขเว, อตฺถิ วาโยธาตุยา นิสฺสรณํ, ตสฺมา สตฺตา วาโยธาตุยา นิสฺสรนฺติฯ
If there were no gratification in the water element … If there were no gratification in the fire element … If there were no gratification in the air element …
ยาวกีวญฺจิเม, ภิกฺขเว, สตฺตา อิมาสํ จตุนฺนํ ธาตูนํ อสฺสาทญฺจ อสฺสาทโต อาทีนวญฺจ อาทีนวโต นิสฺสรณญฺจ นิสฺสรณโต ยถาภูตํ น อพฺภญฺญํสุ, เนว ตาวิเม, ภิกฺขเว, สตฺตา สเทวกา โลกา สมารกา สพฺรหฺมกา สสฺสมณพฺราหฺมณิยา ปชาย สเทวมนุสฺสาย นิสฺสฏา วิสํยุตฺตา วิปฺปมุตฺตา วิมริยาทิกเตน เจตสา วิหรึสุฯ
As long as sentient beings don’t truly understand these four elements’ gratification, drawback, and escape for what they are, they haven’t escaped from this world—with its gods, Māras, and Brahmās, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans—and they don’t live detached, liberated, with a mind free of limits.
ยโต จ โข, ภิกฺขเว, สตฺตา อิมาสํ จตุนฺนํ ธาตูนํ อสฺสาทญฺจ อสฺสาทโต อาทีนวญฺจ อาทีนวโต นิสฺสรณญฺจ นิสฺสรณโต ยถาภูตํ อพฺภญฺญํสุ, อถ, ภิกฺขเว, สตฺตา สเทวกา โลกา สมารกา สพฺรหฺมกา สสฺสมณพฺราหฺมณิยา ปชาย สเทวมนุสฺสาย นิสฺสฏา วิสํยุตฺตา วิปฺปมุตฺตา วิมริยาทิกเตน เจตสา วิหรนฺตี”ติฯ
But when sentient beings truly understand these four elements’ gratification, drawback, and escape for what they are, they’ve escaped from this world—with its gods, Māras, and Brahmās, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans—and they live detached, liberated, with a mind free of limits.”
