Sources of Deeds
“पाणातिपातम्पाहं, भिक्खवे, तिविधं वदामि—लोभहेतुकम्पि, दोसहेतुकम्पि, मोहहेतुकम्पि।
“Pāṇātipātampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, tividhaṁ vadāmi—lobhahetukampi, dosahetukampi, mohahetukampi.
“Bhikkhus, I say that killing living creatures is threefold: caused by greed, hate, or delusion.
अदिन्नादानम्पाहं, भिक्खवे, तिविधं वदामि—लोभहेतुकम्पि, दोसहेतुकम्पि, मोहहेतुकम्पि।
Adinnādānampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, tividhaṁ vadāmi—lobhahetukampi, dosahetukampi, mohahetukampi.
I say that stealing is threefold: caused by greed, hate, or delusion.
कामेसुमिच्छाचारम्पाहं, भिक्खवे, तिविधं वदामि—लोभहेतुकम्पि, दोसहेतुकम्पि, मोहहेतुकम्पि।
Kāmesumicchācārampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, tividhaṁ vadāmi—lobhahetukampi, dosahetukampi, mohahetukampi.
I say that sexual misconduct is threefold: caused by greed, hate, or delusion.
मुसावादम्पाहं, भिक्खवे, तिविधं वदामि—लोभहेतुकम्पि, दोसहेतुकम्पि, मोहहेतुकम्पि।
Musāvādampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, tividhaṁ vadāmi—lobhahetukampi, dosahetukampi, mohahetukampi.
I say that lying is threefold: caused by greed, hate, or delusion.
पिसुणवाचम्पाहं, भिक्खवे, तिविधं वदामि—लोभहेतुकम्पि, दोसहेतुकम्पि, मोहहेतुकम्पि।
Pisuṇavācampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, tividhaṁ vadāmi—lobhahetukampi, dosahetukampi, mohahetukampi.
I say that divisive speech is threefold: caused by greed, hate, or delusion.
फरुसवाचम्पाहं, भिक्खवे, तिविधं वदामि—लोभहेतुकम्पि, दोसहेतुकम्पि, मोहहेतुकम्पि।
Pharusavācampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, tividhaṁ vadāmi—lobhahetukampi, dosahetukampi, mohahetukampi.
I say that harsh speech is threefold: caused by greed, hate, or delusion.
सम्फप्पलापम्पाहं, भिक्खवे, तिविधं वदामि—लोभहेतुकम्पि, दोसहेतुकम्पि, मोहहेतुकम्पि।
Samphappalāpampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, tividhaṁ vadāmi—lobhahetukampi, dosahetukampi, mohahetukampi.
I say that talking nonsense is threefold: caused by greed, hate, or delusion.
अभिज्झम्पाहं, भिक्खवे, तिविधं वदामि—लोभहेतुकम्पि, दोसहेतुकम्पि, मोहहेतुकम्पि।
Abhijjhampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, tividhaṁ vadāmi—lobhahetukampi, dosahetukampi, mohahetukampi.
I say that covetousness is threefold: caused by greed, hate, or delusion.
ब्यापादम्पाहं, भिक्खवे, तिविधं वदामि—लोभहेतुकम्पि, दोसहेतुकम्पि, मोहहेतुकम्पि।
Byāpādampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, tividhaṁ vadāmi—lobhahetukampi, dosahetukampi, mohahetukampi.
I say that ill will is threefold: caused by greed, hate, or delusion.
मिच्छादिट्ठिम्पाहं, भिक्खवे, तिविधं वदामि—लोभहेतुकम्पि, दोसहेतुकम्पि, मोहहेतुकम्पि। इति खो, भिक्खवे, लोभो कम्मनिदानसम्भवो, दोसो कम्मनिदानसम्भवो, मोहो कम्मनिदानसम्भवो। लोभक्खया कम्मनिदानसङ्खयो, दोसक्खया कम्मनिदानसङ्खयो, मोहक्खया कम्मनिदानसङ्खयो”ति।
Micchādiṭṭhimpāhaṁ, bhikkhave, tividhaṁ vadāmi—lobhahetukampi, dosahetukampi, mohahetukampi. Iti kho, bhikkhave, lobho kammanidānasambhavo, doso kammanidānasambhavo, moho kammanidānasambhavo. Lobhakkhayā kammanidānasaṅkhayo, dosakkhayā kammanidānasaṅkhayo, mohakkhayā kammanidānasaṅkhayo”ti.
I say that wrong view is threefold: caused by greed, hate, or delusion. And so greed, hate, and delusion are sources and origins for deeds. With the ending of greed, hate, and delusion, the sources of deeds are ended.”
